Equestrian Team SPORTS NEWS The Otago Secondary Schools‘ Teams event was held at the Taieri A&P Showgrounds in Mosgiel in March. This event consisted of Dressage, Show Jumping and Show Cross which proved to be very challenging this year. Many schools from all over Otago and Southland competed for the Alan Barker Shield. Columba was very well represented with nine pupils competing. The team consisted of Gabrielle McFarlane (Equestrian Captain), Jessica Barton, Alannah Corson-Keogh, Hannah Johnston, Michaela Little, Ellie Nesbit, Albertine Ongley, Anna Pedlow and Tiffany Robinson. Out of these nine riders the top four scores from each height were used for the placings. This year the competition was tough and unfortunately the Columba team was placed second to Gore High School by just one point. All of the girls and their horses put a huge effort into the day and performed to a very high standard. This year we received new saddle blankets and updated browbands which made the horses look very smart. The Columba Equestrian Team would like to thank the Taieri Districts Pony Club for hosting the event, Miss Wilson for all of her support, our Manager Bill McFarlane and Mrs Shona Harvey, the Sports Coordinator. Also a big ―thank you‖ to all of the parents who assisted throughout the day making this event possible, helping the team run smoothly and providing great support! I would like to thank all of the girls in the team for doing such a great job on the day and representing Columba to a very high standard. The whole team was turned out beautifully and all the horses and riders did very well and importantly, the team showed excellent sportsmanship. I wish the Columba equestrian team good luck for future events. Rowing 2009-2010 The Columba College Rowing Squad competed at a number of events over the 2009-2010 summer season. The novice squad was coached by Miss Alex Gibb, formerly of Cambridge and the senior rowers were coached again by Mr Matt McGovern. All of the rowers competed at the South Island Club regatta in Twizel in February. At this regatta the Novice eight gained a silver medal in the Novice eight race. This crew was made up of: Grace Swain (coxswain), Ella Haig, Charlotte Williams, Tara Bennett, Elysia Shettler, Amelia Gatward-Ferguson, Olive Dippie, Olivia Dodds and Annabel Angland. At the same regatta the Columba Senior crew was placed third and received a bronze medal in the Women‘s Club Eight. This crew was made up of: Sacha Coghill (coxswain), Elizabeth Wallace-Gibbs, Ellen Kirkwood, Georgina Caley, Charlotte Foster, Sasha Roulston, Tilley Carroll, Kate Manera and Georgia Manera. A squad of girls was then selected to compete at the New Zealand Secondary Schools‘ Rowing Championships. The Columba Under 17 Eight was placed 6 th in the A Final of this event and 4 th in the B final of the Under 18 Eight. The Under 17 Eight was comprised of: Sacha Coghill (coxswain), Elizabeth Wallace-Gibbs, Ellen Kirkwood, Georgina Caley, Tilley Carroll, Sasha Roulston, Georgia Manera, Kate Manera and Lauren Williams. These were very good results and the girls can be very proud of their efforts. Finally, at the recent North End Rowing Club end-of-season awards evening, Ellen Kirkwood in Year 12 was named the ―Most Improved Oarsman‖ for the season. This was a wonderful acknowledgement of Ellen‘s improvement in the sport – well done, Ellen. The rowing squads now look forward to winter training to improve their fitness levels and technique in preparation for the next summer season – good luck, girls!
