2012 German Film Competition for Years 7 to 13 Schools and
Universities
For the past few years the National German Adviser, together with the Goethe Institut and the German
Embassy, have run a short film competition for intermediate, secondary and tertiary students studying
German in New Zealand. The topic is set in Wellington and usually relates to a significant German or
international event. With 2012 being the bi-centenary of the publication of the Grimm’s Fairy tales, this
year’s topic was: “Es war einmal…”, the German equivalent of “Once upon a time…”. The Year 10
German class based their entry on the Olympic Games and had the various characters in the most
well known fairy tales entering and competing as teams. Their entry, “Die Märchen Olympiade”,
featured Elisa Maierl as the teacher, with the roles of Wilhelm and Jakob Grimm shared by Amy Logie
and Alice Toomer and then Judy Park and Grace Wilson, and the rest of the class playing characters
from “Red Riding Hood”, “Cinderella”, “The Frog Prince”, “Hansel and Gretel” and “Snow White”, with
seven pupils from the New Entrants’ class playing the dwarves and Analise Cowie as the flag bearer
and doping tester. Their film won Second Prize in the Year 10 category, with First Prize going to
Glendowie High School in Auckland.
The Year 9 German class called their film “Zweihundert Jahre Später” and imagined the Grimm
brothers still being alive today and living in a home for the elderly. They decide that, since it’s now
possible to travel by plane to the other side of the world, they will celebrate the bi-centenary by taking
their favourite fairy tale characters to New Zealand. Each character has to say in an interview why
they would like to visit New Zealand. Red Riding Hood, for example, wants to learn how to make
pavlova so she can take it to her grandmother, Hansel and Gretel want to buy Jaffas as they will be
better than bread crumbs for finding their way home, the youngest of the twelve dancing princesses
wants to go to the Middlemarch Farmers’ Ball in the hope of meeting a wealthy farmer and so forth,
finishing up with the Loreley who, while not a character from the Grimm Fairy Tales, wants to come
too so she can join Pania in Napier and sit beside the sea for a while. The film ends with all the
characters boarding the plane with Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm. Annabelle Ritchie and Ruby Whitaker
did a commendable job learning all their lines as Wilhelm and Jakob Grimm and the rest of the Year 9
class, with a bit of help from Year 10 to cover those who were sick on the filming day, playing the
various characters and Kaitlin Chamberlain and Mikayla Cameron as the air hostesses. The girls
repeated the success of last year’s Year 9 German by winning First Prize in their section but will have
to wait until the awards ceremony at The National Film Archives in Wellington on the 7 th December to
see if they can also follow in their footsteps by winning the “Bester Film” Trophy, not an easy feat
against the more senior and tertiary entries.

Once again, we are very grateful to Mr Evan Baddock for giving his time, expertise, patience and good
humour to help with the filming and editing of our entries.
2012 Chinese Class Captains and Deputy Class Captains
The Chinese Class Captain and Deputy Class Captain are students who work exceptionally well with
others and who are able to lead other students in activities. The Captain is voted by everyone in
class. Both the Captain and Deputy need to co-operate with the teacher to set up tasks or collect
homework in class, and help with organising Chinese events.
In class, when the class is about to begin or finish, the teacher will say “Class begin or finish” in
Chinese. The Class Captain (or Deputy Captain) will need to follow the teacher to call out “stand up”
to others, then lead others to greet the teacher in Chinese. After the teacher’s response, the Class
Captain will say “please sit down” in Chinese to lead the whole class, and then the class will begin.
