hird Street Music School Settlement, the nation’s oldest community music school, was
founded in 1894 and has been changing lives and its community by providing access to
world-class music instruction, regardless of
ABOUT
financial resources or ability. As part of the settlement
movement of the mid-19th century in which young
university graduates “settled” in poor, immigrant
communities to improve the quality of life, Third
Street originally employed live-in social workers and,
THIRD STREET MUSIC SCHOOL SETTLEMENT
in addition to music lessons, provided public baths for use by students and families. From its
very inception, Third Street has been a home away from home for countless students, instilling
within them a genuine sense of accomplishment and achievement. Third Street still serves a
large immigrant community, and more than 75% of all students receive some type of need-based
financial aid or subsidized instruction. Over the course of 118 years, Third Street’s programs
have grown and earned a reputation for teaching excellence that now attract students and
families with diverse backgrounds from all over the New York area.
Now in its second century of service, the School provides instruction in music and dance
to more than 5,000 students of all ages at its school on East 11th Street and through partnerships
with 25 schools and community centers, located primarily on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
The School is known for its vibrant chamber music programs, its new focus on adult programming
and its commitment to woodwinds and brass instruction for pre-teen and teenage beginners.
Third Street offers weekly after-school and Saturday music instruction (individual and group)
in most instruments and voice, along with theory, composition, chamber music, ensemble
and many performance activities. The School also offers classes in ballet, tap dance and hip-hop.
In addition to after-school and Saturday programs, Third Street offers a range of summer
workshops and early childhood programs, including a licensed music-centered preschool.
As part of its educational mission and in service to the broader community, the School
presents more than 250 free-to-the-public concerts and recitals by faculty, students and
renowned guest artists each year.
Third Street Music School Settlement believes that music and dance transcend cultural and
societal boundaries, inspiring togetherness, bringing people joy and enriching the communities
in which they live. Access and exposure to the arts is an integral part of a thriving cultural
community and a well-rounded education. To this end, Third Street strives to be a leader in
arts learning both in the community and nationwide.
INSTRUCTION
Learning in the arts, especially music
and dance, is central to Third Street
Music School Settlement’s mission.
For 118 years, Third Street has strived
OVERVIEW 7
PATHWAY TO EXCELLENCE
PATHWAY TO EXCELLENCE is a guide to help students of all ages understand
the recommended progression from beginning-level to more advancedlevel
music study and achievement.
The goal of the Pathway to Excellence is to provide an opportunity for
all students to achieve their full potential in a nurturing and supportive
environment. The School is equally committed to students who desire music
solely as an enrichment activity as well as those who seek to pursue music
as a professional career. Third Street’s excellent faculty and strong programs
provide a rich music and dance learning experience.
ABOUT YOUR PATHWAY
Perhaps you are thinking about ways to incorporate music into your infant
or preschooler’s life. Maybe you have a child in elementary school who is
ready to take music lessons, or a child in middle school or high school who
really wants to learn to play an instrument. Or maybe you are an adult and
want to fulfill a childhood dream or wish to get back to that instrument
you studied as a child. Everyone comes to Third Street to follow his/her own
path. Once here, the path to success involves participation in many of the
following activities at the appropriate time in your musical development.
OVERVIEW 9
A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF COURSE TYPES
EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC CLASSES
Begin your child’s musical journey at a young age in Third Street’s Early
Childhood Music Program, which encourages the development of social,
rhythmic, emotional, creative and academic skills. Research has shown
that there is a window of time in a young child’s life during which the
capacity to achieve musical competence (and excellence) is greatly enhanced
if the child is exposed to an enriched musical environment. Third Street’s
instructors make these “no pressure” courses fun and accessible. Students
can apply the skills they acquire to all areas of their early childhood learning,
especially building a strong foundation for future music and dance activities.
BEGINNER GROUP CLASSES
Beginner group classes are an effective way to start learning a new
instrument in an exciting and supportive environment. Classes are small,
usually three to six students, and include 45 minutes of instruction.
INDIVIDUAL LESSONS
One-on-one lessons, one teacher with one student at a time, provide an
opportunity for concentrated work and individual attention. Individual lessons
promote skills, achievement and enthusiasm and are recommended for all
students who wish to move along the pathway to musical excellence at
Third Street. Individual lessons are offered in 30-minute, 45-minute and
60-minute increments. (Beginner students have the option to register for
beginner group or partner instruction before taking individual lessons.)
PARTNER LESSONS
Partner lessons, one teacher with two students at a time, like individual
lessons, also provide an opportunity for concentrated work and individual
attention. Partner lessons are an excellent precursor to individual lessons.
Partner lessons are available in 30- and 45-minute increments and are
recommended only for students who have little or no experience on their
instrument and are of similar ages.
Individual AND PARTNER
lessons are available for:
Piano
Strings: violin, viola, cello,
string bass
Woodwinds: flute, recorder,
oboe, clarinet, bassoon,
saxophone
Brass: trumpet, French horn,
trombone, tuba, baritone horn
Guitar: acoustic, electric, bass,
ukulele
Percussion: drum set, marimba,
orchestral percussion
Voice
Composition, Songwriting
Music Theory, Improvisation
10 OVERVIEW
ABOUT TRADITIONAL AND SUZUKI
INSTRUCTION METHODS
Traditional METHod InSTrUCTIon (for all instruments and voice)
There isn’t one traditional method for teaching music. The most effective
teachers bring the best of what they have learned through their own training
and experience and develop an approach that enables them to respond to
the needs of each individual student. In general, however, the traditional
approach to music study integrates note reading concurrently with playing
and the repertoire is customized to the student’s needs and interests. The
traditional approach is best suited to adults and children over the age of
five who have already begun to read words. Parent/guardian participation
in a child’s lesson, though desirable, is optional with the traditional method
of instruction.
Suzuki METHod InSTrUCTIon
(piano, violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute)
The Suzuki Method of instruction, which is as much a life philosophy as it is
a method, was developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in Japan after the end of
World War II. Dr. Suzuki believed that all children are innately musical, that
they can excel musically and that a “beautiful heart,” sensitivity and
discipline can be achieved through hearing and playing music when started
early in life. The Suzuki Method is most effective when started with very
young children.
Here are some basic hallmarks of the Suzuki Method:
n The method is based on the way children learn their native language—
by listening and imitating. Pieces are learned by ear (without reading
music) and played from memory. Note reading is incorporated later on
in the child’s training.
n Parent, teacher and child are all active participants in the learning process.
Parents must be willing to learn the instruction method and make a
commitment to attend lessons, group classes and performances. Parents
are also required to participate in at-home practice.
n The curriculum uses a common repertoire which is organized by books of
advancing levels, starting with Book 1. The common repertoire enables
students to play with each other and creates an international community
of Suzuki learners.
n In addition to individual, partner or group lessons, young Suzuki students
are required to attend a weekly repertoire class. The purpose of this class is
to review and reinforce pieces learned in lessons while developing musicality
and ensemble playing skills, often using games to highlight important
technical points and promote music reading skills. Repertoire classes
also promote development of musical rapport among students.

MUSIC & MOVEMENT
(Ages 18 months to 3 with parent/caregiver)
Children in Music & Movement respond actively to music by singing, moving
and playing toddler-sized xylophones, marimbas, glockenspiels, drums and
recorders. This class forms a foundation for music and dance courses in the
years to come.
MUSIKGARTEN: FAMILY MUSIC FOR
BABIES AND TODDLERS
(Ages 1 to 3 with parent/caregiver)
The Family Music for Babies and Toddlers class is designed to awaken a
child’s curiosity about music and movement. Repertoire includes lullabies,
bounces, rhymes, echoes and imaginative activities. Students play simple
percussion instruments and incorporate music with movement. Foundations
are formed for beat awareness, vocal production and aural discrimination.
MUSIKGARTEN: CYCLE OF SEASONS
(Ages 3 to 5 with parent/caregiver)
Cycle of Seasons promotes musical as well as overall development and
includes singing, rhythm, beat activities, movement exploration, listening,
creating, playing instruments and listening to poems and stories. Musical
concepts such as rhythmic and melodic patterns, tempo, dynamics and
timbre are introduced and explored. Families receive CDs and other materials
for home play and fun activities.
BILINGUAL BIRDIES R
(Ages 0 to 4 with parent/caregiver)
Studies show that the earlier a child is introduced to a second language, the
greater the chances that he/she will become proficient in that language.
Learning a second language also helps children excel in other areas of
learning. The Bilingual Birdies class is interactive and activity-based. Music
and movement are the core elements that children and parents/caregivers
will explore during the class. Children sing along to memorable songs, play
instruments and dance to the sound of lively beats. A CD with class songs
is given to all participants.
MUSIC MAKERS AT THE KEYBOARD
(Ages 5 to 8)
This class for groups of young beginners features a variety of activities
which lay the foundation for keyboard success. The program features an
aural approach to music learning, building on songs children have come
COURSES OF STUDY 15
to love, providing a natural pathway to reading music while building a
much-loved piano repertoire. Music Makers: At the Keyboard teaches songs,
develops keyboard technique and improves aural skills. Students will also
learn to compose and improvise music while laying the foundation for
music reading fluency. In developing comprehensive musicianship at the
keyboard, children are building self-confidence, learning to cooperate with
each other and improving their concentration.
BEGINNER GROUP CLASSES
(Ages 5 to 14 – Instrumental and Dance, Ages 5 to 18 – Chorus)
see page 36.
The piano department welcomes students of all ages and levels for
individual lessons, partner lessons and beginner group classes.
INDIVIDUAL/PARTNER INSTRUCTION: Individual (often called “private”)
lessons provide personalized attention and enable students to progress at
their own pace, improve their skills and learn repertoire that is most suited
to their particular interests and needs. Partner lessons are lessons with two
students and one instructor and can provide a fun and lower cost option
for many students.
InITIAL InterVIEW/OrienTATIon: New students age 5 and under, or
students with prior playing experience, must meet with the Department
Chairperson to evaluate his/her readiness or skill level. All other students, and
parents of students under the age of 18, participate in group orientation
and placement sessions held during the fall and spring. Orientation session
dates will be provided upon enrollment.
BEGINNER GroUP CLASSES: Beginner group classes are an effective way
to start learning a new instrument in an fun and engaging environment.
Classes are small, usually three to six students, and include 45 minutes of
instruction. Days and times of beginner group classes vary by instrument.
Please contact Student Support Services for the most updated schedule or
visit the School’s Web site at www.thirdstreetmusicschool.org.
GroUP oPTIon for TrADITIonal Piano STUDEnts: The School
recommends that all school-age piano students who are enrolled in
Traditional Method individual lessons take at least one group class each
week, such as Music Theory, Composition, Piano Ensemble or Jazz Ensemble.
When combined with Traditional Method individual lessons, these group
classes are reduced-fee or tuition-free. Please see page 10 for a description
of the Traditional Method.
Suzuki Repertoire Classes: For students learning to play the piano
through the Suzuki Method, a weekly Suzuki Repertoire (“Rep”) Class is
required. Each level of piano “Rep” Class has one weekday and one Saturday
option and students must participate weekly. Students will be assigned to
a “Rep” Class by the Department Chairperson based on level and teacher
recommendation. Please see page 10 for a description of the Suzuki Method.

OTHER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
The EDA MCfArlane Clark Piano CertifICATE Program
The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program is designed for motivated
piano students who are committed to achieving their full potential. This
program is open to both Suzuki and Traditional Method piano students.
Third Street has adapted the curriculum of the Carnegie Hall Royal
Conservatory Achievement Program for The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano
Certificate Program. Like the Achievement Program, the Piano Certificate
Program provides a fair and challenging assessment tool that measures
achievement and is deliberately broader in scope, as Third Street wishes to
encourage students to include such important musical pursuits as chamber
music and concert performance in their course of study. The requirements
are similar enough that students can participate in either or both programs
as desired from year to year. The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program
is free to all students enrolled in piano instruction. Students are evaluated
on repertoire, sight-reading, ear training and technique as
part of a year-long program of study that includes concert
attendance and performance. Upon completion of the 10
graded levels of The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate
Program, each student will have completed a high quality,
comprehensive piano and general music education. This program
also includes many opportunities for public performance,
personal growth and musical development.
Students may register for The Eda McFarlane Clark Piano
Certificate Program by filling out the registration form
(available from any piano faculty member or from Student
Support Services) and returning it to the Student Support
Services Office. Upon registration, each student will receive
a folder with program materials which he/she will review
with his/her instructor. Exams are held in February and in
late spring, with students playing scales, technical exercises and repertoire.
An awards ceremony and honors recital is held in the spring; students
achieving highest distinction perform in a recital at Steinway Hall each May.
PIANO OLYMPICS
The Piano Olympics are a fun way for students to strengthen skills and gain
a sense of accomplishment. It is especially helpful to students of the Eda
McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program because Piano Olympics events
include the program’s required scales, chords and arpeggios. Students
are divided into teams by skill level and age, and compete for their adopted
“countries” with prizes given to all participants. The emphasis is on
participation, preparation and team spirit. The Piano Olympics concludes
with an international reception. This program is free to all students enrolled
in piano instruction.
MUSIC THEORY
Music theory, the study of how music works, is an important part of every
music student’s education. Third Street adopted the Royal Conservatory of
Music theory curriculum in 2011-12 and will continue to expand its program
to incorporate this exciting, proven and rigorous course of study that is also
the official curriculum for The Achievement Program, a collaboration
between Carnegie Hall and the Royal Conservatory of Music. A complete
syllabus is available online at: http://theachievementprogram.org/sites/
COURSES OF STUDY 27
COMPOSITION
For ages 8 and up
Third Street’s music composition programs teaches students to create
original music. The composition curriculum covers three main topics: melodic
development; choral and imitative accompaniments; and instrumentation
and arrangement. Students explore both contemporary and classical styles
in the composition courses and their original compositions are presented
in several performances throughout the school year.
In addition to traditional composition methods, a fully equipped technology
lab with Macintosh computers helps students learn to compose using
cutting-edge, user-friendly software applications like Sibelius, Garage Band
and Logic. The courses are taught in a workshop environment that
emphasizes group participation and shared learning, while allowing for
significant individual instruction.
The prerequisite for Composition I is a minimum of one year of music
study and one year of music theory. Students are placed in the appropriate
level course by taking a placement exam or by permission of the instructor.
JAZZ THEORY, IMPROVISATION & COMPOSITION
Jazz music originated in the United States around the beginning of the 20th
century and encompasses many different styles, from swing to blues to
ragtime to bebop. One key element common to almost all of these styles is
improvisation. A strong base in jazz theory, performance and improvisation
can also provide an excellent background for popular styles of music. The
School offers one level of Jazz Theory. Students who are participating in
Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Prep or Jazz Big Band are encouraged to enroll in a Jazz
Theory and/or Improvisation class at Third Street. To participate in the Jazz
Program, students must have completed at least one year of instruction
on their instrument.

CHAMBER MUSIC
Chamber music is written for small ensembles and said to be the “music of
friends,” whether played at home or at a world-renowned concert hall.
Chamber music spans many eras, genres and forms. It requires the
development of both musical and social skills, as each instrument has its
own part that gives voice to a musical conversation. Whether amateur or
professional, being able to collaborate with other musicians is a vital
skill that is honed through chamber music. In chamber music, students
learn to communicate and develop close relationships through music, to
give expression to a vast, wide-ranging body of repertoire, and to make
music for the enjoyment of musician, ensemble and audience.
PERFORMANCE AT THIRD STREET
With more than 250 student, faculty and guest artist performances each
year, performance is an extremely important part of Third Street’s musical
life. The School strongly encourages students to perform as often as possible
because public performances help teachers and students set goals and
achieve them. Performance opportunities at Third Street include:
n Music Hours: Music hours are student recitals programmed by
instrument and led by each Department Chairperson. (For example, all
string students perform at the “String Music Hour,” all piano students
perform at the “Piano Music Hour.”) Music Hours provide an opportunity
for students to try out new pieces, polish old ones and prepare for
upcoming recitals and concerts. Music Hours are relaxed and informal
and take place in a supportive and nurturing environment. Students are
expected to attend Music Hours to perform and also to learn how to
become good audience members.
Music Hours take place on Saturday afternoons for both string and
piano students; on Monday evenings for woodwind, brass and percussion
students; and at varying days and times for the guitar department and
voice department.
Please note that participation in Music Hours and other public performances
may be a requirement for certain merit-based scholarships and/or needbased
financial aid. All students should check with their teachers, Department
Chairs or Student Support Services for more information.
n Studio Recitals: Students who study with the same teacher perform
in an annual Studio Recital, usually during the second half of the school year.
n Department rECITALS: Each department gives several recitals
throughout the year to showcase students who have made exceptional
progress. Students are recommended to perform at a Department Recital
by their instructor. Department Chairperson approval is required.
n Program & SPECIAL rECITALS: Most programs and all large ensembles
also give performances throughout the school year. Examples include:
all orchestras, bands, choruses and jazz and rock ensembles; The Eda
McFarlane Clark Piano Certificate Program; the Barbara E. Field Chamber
Music Program; the annual Nutcracker Performance; New Horizons Band
concerts; Composition Recitals; as well as the String Department’s String
’Stravaganza Concerts.
n All-SCHool rECITALS: Students are selected by audition to perform
at these recitals, including the Stowe C. Phelps Annual Student Concert
held in May and the Holiday Music Hour held in December.

DANCE
Dance allows us to express musical ideas and sounds through body
movement. Third Street Music School Settlement believes that dance and
music are inseparably connected and that dance offers a unique opportunity
for physical and artistic expression. Third Street’s dance program emphasizes
proper body alignment, healthy physical development and the complete
integration of music and dance.
In addition to being a discipline of its own, dance study can also help to
expand the musicianship of instrumentalists and singers, too. For example,
dance can enhance the physical connection to music that is so important
for instrumentalist and singers. It also helps develop a deeper understanding
of the many musical forms which are based on dance styles like the waltz,
sarabande, minuet, gigue, barcarolle, mazurka and polonaise. Third Street
recommends that all music students, at some point in their music education,
study dance.
Students follow a carefully developed, sequential course of study that
includes increased
participation and
performance opportunities
as they progress through
the program.
Students considering
a career in dance can
pursue an accelerated
course of study. The
most advanced students
may audition for the
PRESCHOOL
For more than 30 years, Third Street Preschool has been an integral and
important part of the Third Street Music School Settlement family and the
East Village community. Third Street preschoolers grow and learn through
play, exploration and discovery in a nurturing environment, rich in interesting,
challenging and creative experiences. The overarching goal is to provide a
setting in which each child can develop a greater sense of self, a respect for
others, and a lifelong love of the arts and learning. The curriculum, with its
strong emphasis on music, literacy, visual arts, and dramatic play, offers
children a powerful way to broaden their understanding of the world
around them.
Preschool classrooms are designed to encourage active participation
with experiences that support creative thinking and problem solving,
while encouraging the development of language, emerging numeracy and
intellectual curiosity. The Preschool’s highly qualified and experienced
faculty have an in-depth understanding of child development and the
creative arts. They know that play, discovery and fun are integral to learning.
Third Street’s Preschool program values the whole child and his or her
experience. Social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs are met with
sensitivity and understanding. Children view the classroom as their
community, an extension of their home and culture. Open and positive
partnerships with parents are encouraged.
Third Street Preschool Music Curriculum:
n Orff-Based Music Instruction: All children enrolled in the Third Street
Preschool attend weekly, 45-minute Orff-based music and movement
classes. The Orff approach is a way of teaching children about music
that engages the mind and body through a mixture of singing, dancing,
acting and the use of percussion instruments. Lessons are presented
with an element of “play,” helping children learn at their own level of
understanding.
n Music & Movement: Through integration of music and dance, preschool
children will explore body movements and spatial, time and energy
variations. The class will encourage large motor development and creativity,
while emphasizing proper alignment, core body movement and an
awareness of moving the body through space with others.
n Introduction to Keyboard: For fouryear
olds, an age-appropriate weekly
instrumental class focusing on the
piano keyboard is offered in a fun and
interesting way. This class is intended
for exposure only. Children are not
expected to practice outside of the
classroom.
n Music Exploratorium: Each month,
children will learn about and focus
on a new musical instrument or
instrument family along with a
specific style, era or composer.
As part of the Music Exploratorium,
all of the children will attend a
monthly concert with performances
by Third Street’s esteemed music
faculty, featuring the instrument/
instrument family of the month.
n Bi-Monthly Sing-A-Longs: All children
enrolled in the Third Street Preschool
participate in Preschool-wide sing-alongs
twice per month.
Installment plans can be established at the time of enrollment. Families
receiving need-based financial aid are automatically placed on an installment
plan and the first payment is due at enrollment. Tuition, in full, must be
paid by January 15, 2013. Failure to adhere to the payment schedule may
result in suspension of enrollment until payment is made.
The School offers two payment plans:
n Two (2) payments, one due by September 15 and one due by January 15.
Additional fees are assessed on late payments.
n Five (5) payments due monthly, September through January, by the 15th
of each month. Additional fees are assessed on late payments.
Can I register for classes if I have an outstanding balance
Students may not register for additional classes or the next term unless all
outstanding balances are paid.
How much will I be charged if my check is returned by the bank unpaid
There is a $25 service charge for all returned checks.
NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID
Need-based financial aid is available to students who need assistance to
pay their tuition. Need-based financial aid awards are based on the School’s
availability of funds and students must provide proof of household income
and other supporting documentation.
Third Street’s applications for need-based financial aid are processed by
the National Association of Independent Schools’ School & Student Services
(SSS). The amount of the awards is made by a staff committee at Third
Street whose deliberations are made in strictest confidence.
To apply for need-base financial aid, applicants establish an account
online at sss.nais.org and complete a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS).
Once you have paid the $37 application fee, upload or mail your documents to
SSS. (Please allow 24 hours for processing.) Applications must be updated for
each term in the calendar year (Fall/Spring and Summer). Third Street’s Tuition
Assistance Committee will notify families of the award decision by mail.
If you would like more information about need-based financial aid, please
contact Student Support Services at 212-777-3240 extensions 17, 18 or 30.
MERIT-BASED AWARDS
In addition to need-based financial aid, the School offers approximately 40
merit-based awards which typically range from $100 to $250. There is no
application for merit-based awards and students are selected based on
Annual Auditions, Teacher Evaluation Forms and participation in schoolwide
activities.
ATTENDANCE & MAKE-UP POLICY
Regular attendance is important to music and/or dance learning at Third
Street. As a courtesy to instructors, students are asked to call the School
and leave a message for their instructor if they expect to be absent.
The School may discontinue enrollment for any student with three (3)
consecutive absences, a pattern of absences or consistent tardiness,
without notification.
Instructors may elect to use the end of year Studio Recital in place of one
lesson. Instructors must notify parents directly if the recital is to be in place
of a lesson. If it is deemed inappropriate for the student to play in the recital, he or
she must be given a regular lesson. Adult students are given the choice as to
whether they wish to substitute recital participation for a lesson.
Lessons missed due to teacher absence are rescheduled at the earliest
date possible. If the instructor is not able to give the lesson missed by the
end of the term, the School will issue a credit to a family’s account. Due to
space and scheduling considerations, Third Street does not require instructors
to make up lessons due to student absences or cancellations. There are no
refunds for lessons or classes missed due to student absence; however,
lessons missed by students may be made up at the instructor’s discretion.
WITHDRAWAL & REFUND POLICY
Individual/Partner Instruction
Withdrawals must be delivered to Student Support Services, in writing,
by hand, postal mail or e-mail, two weeks prior to the effective date. Verbal
notification or not attending a class is not an acceptable form of notification
of intent to withdraw. A withdrawal fee, equal to two weeks of tuition, is
assessed when a student withdraws from individual/partner lessons.
Refunds are issued for unused lessons beyond the withdrawal period;
however, the registration fee is not refundable. Students may attend
lessons during the two-week withdrawal period.
GROUP Instruction (MUSIC, dance and earlY chILDHOOD)
Withdrawals must be delivered to Student Support Services, in writing, by
hand, postal mail or e-mail, two weeks prior to the effective date. Verbal
notification or not attending a class is not an acceptable form of notification
of intent to withdraw. To receive a refund, students must withdraw from
group instruction prior to the start of the third week of the class. A
withdrawal fee, equal to two weeks of tuition, is assessed when a student
withdraws from group instruction. To withdraw and receive a refund for
the second half of the year, written notice to Student Support Services must
be received by January 15 of the enrollment year.
PRESCHOOL PROGraM
Written notice of withdrawal must be received by June 15, prior to the start
of classes in September. After this date, parents or guardians are responsible
for the full year’s tuition. There are no refunds for Preschool program classes
after June 15. The deposit is not refundable or transferable.
ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES & POLICIES 53
54 ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES & POLICIES
COURSE CANCELLATION
While the cancellation of courses rarely happens, it does occur occasionally,
usually due to insufficient enrollment. Students or parents of students will
be notified immediately of any cancellation. The School will make every
effort to reschedule the student for another session of the same course, if
one is available, at a convenient time. If no such course is available, the
School will issue a refund.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS
In cases of inclement weather, Third Street will close when the New York
City public schools close. All school closings are broadcast on radio stations
WINS (1010 AM) and WOR (710 AM). Third Street will also send an e-mail
notice and updates will be posted to the home page of the School’s Web
site. Students can also call the School’s main telephone number, 212-777-
3240, to hear a recorded message regarding closings. Missed lessons and
classes will be rescheduled at the earliest date possible.
INSTRUMENT RENTAL
Third Street Music School provides rental of some woodwind, brass and
string instruments to students, subject to availability. Students should
consult with their instructor if they wish to rent an instrument. If an
instrument is available from the School, Student Support Services will
notify the student when it is ready to pick up. A refundable deposit, equal
to the annual rental fee, is required. The School also partners with several
retail establishments that provide rental instruments. More information
about these establishments is available from Student Support Services.
STUDIO AVAILABILITY
All music students are encouraged to practice every day. During times of
decreased building use, e.g., Monday through Friday before 3:00 p.m. or
after 7:00 p.m., students may sign out a practice room at the Reception Desk.
58 WAYS OF GIVING
Third Street Music
School Settlement
relies on contributions
from individuals,
foundations,
corporations and
government agencies
since tuition and fees
cover roughly twothirds
of the School’s
operating costs.
All contributions,
large and small, are
appreciated.
WAYS OF GIVING
TO THIRD STREET
More than 75% of all Third Street students benefit from need-based financial aid,
merit-based scholarships, and/or free, low-cost or subsidized enrichment, a
testament to the vitality of the School’s mission to make the study of music and
dance accessible to all. Tuition, fees and other earned income cover only 75%
of Third Street’s annual operating budget, and the remainder, approximately
$1.4 million, is contributed by individuals, foundations, corporations, local
businesses and government funding sources that believe in the power of the
arts to enrich our lives.
Third Street Music School Settlement is a registered New York State
charity and all contributions are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
Here are some of the ways you can help:
AnnUAL FUND CONTRIBUTIONS provide support in one fiscal year for
the programs listed in this catalog. Contributions can be general or targeted
toward a specific program. Many employers have Matching Gift Programs
that can double or even triple the value of your annual fund contribution. If
your employer matches charitable contributions, please send a matching
gift form along with your contribution.
WAYS OF GIVING 59
TRIBUTE GIFTS, in honor or in memory of friends, family, students and
faculty, are a meaningful way to support Third Street’s annual needs while
recognizing an important milestone or special occasion.
IN-KIND DONATIONS, including musical instruments, instructional
supplies, classroom and office equipment and pro-bono services, can
enrich the educational experience and advance the School’s capacity to
serve its students. Third Street recommends that you speak to an
independent financial or legal advisor regarding the tax deductibility of
in-kind contributions. Instrument donations help students whose families
cannot afford them and can also provide replacement parts that strengthen
the School’s instrument inventory available for loan or rental to students. In
the case of pianos, a written profile and physical assessment are required
before a donation can be accepted. An up-to-date wish list of desired items
is posted on the School’s Web site at www.thirdstreetmusicschool.org.
PLAnnED GIFTS are a wonderful way to perpetuate a legacy of music and
dance learning for generations to come. Leaving a bequest through a will,
donating an IRA account or life insurance policy, or establishing a life-income
plan are just some of the ways you can provide for Third Street through
planned gifts. Planned gifts are usually designated as unrestricted reserve
funds, but can also be designated for specific programs or initiatives. The
School recommends that you speak to an independent financial or legal
advisor before making a planned gift. Also, the School recommends that
you share your gift plans with Third Street, so you can be assured that the
School is able to honor your wishes.
For further information about
supporting Third Street, please
call the Development Office
at 2I2-777-3240, ext. 26.
Thank you.
SPONSORSHIPS AND DESIGNATED GIFTS provide significant support
for programs such as need-based financial aid, merit-based scholarships,
chamber music, ensembles and School & Community Partnerships.
ENDOWMENT GIFTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS provide support in perpetuity
for Third Street, ensuring that the School’s programs and students will
continue to grow and flourish. These gifts can offer prominent naming
opportunities.
FUND-RAISING SPECIAL EVENTS Each
year Third Street hosts two fund-raising
events: the Anniversary Luncheon and
Spring Dance Party as a way to raise funds
and strengthen the School’s community
of friends and supporters. The Parents Association
also organizes a Raffle to generate
support from family and friends.
