Artie’s Olympics
Y
How does Artie’s Olympics work
Artie’s Olympics is a fun activity-based scheme
designed by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for
children aged 3 - 8 years old. Its aim is to encourage
young children to get active and enjoy physical
exercise whilst raising funds to keep vulnerable
hearts beating. This scheme is suitable for Nurseries,
Infant Schools, Beaver Scouts, Rainbow Guides as well
as any other groups that work with young children.
Over a course of days or weeks you will teach the
children new games and activities which you can
pick from a wide selection given in the Artie’s
Olympics Organisers’ Guide. All activities are easily
adaptable to suit the age and abilities of the children
involved.
Who is Artie Beat
Artie Beat is a BHF mascot who stars in
educational resources for children to help to
deliver the message that a healthy lifestyle is
important and can be fun.
This will culminate in an Artie’s Olympics Day
when all the children will carry out the new
activities they have learned in front of an
audience.
In the Artie’s Olympics Organisers’ Guide you
will find a range of both competitive and
non-competitive activities to choose from.
You simply select five and this will make up
your very own Artie’s Olympics
programme.
All the children (or their parents) will be
given sponsor forms and fundraising tips
to raise funds for the BHF. The children’s
individual totals will not be recorded, but
will be pooled into a single school total.
Your nursery/school/group
can keep 20% of the total
amount raised - this could pay
for new equipment.

Children and the Bhf
Over 4,600 babies are born with heart defects
each year - that’s 1 in every 145 babies born
How does the BHF help
Y We provide a wealth of information on all aspects of
heart disease so parents can find out as much as
possible about their child’s condition.
Y We fund a growing number of Paediatric Cardiac
Liaison Nurses whose role starts in antenatal clinics
with the diagnosis of the heart defect, and continues
with follow-up care through the complete patient
journey.
Y The BHF funds over 1,200 research projects a year
some of which are looking into the causes of and
treatments for congenital heart disease.
What the BHF does to tackle the problem
Y The BHF produces an enormous range of free
publications to help teachers and parents educate
children about healthy eating and the importance of
exercise.
Y We are only able to give away our great educational
resources because of the money raised by events like
Artie’s Olympics.
To request a Kids’ and Schools’ catalogue, listing our
full range of educational resources, either call
Jacob’s story
Jacob, pictured here with one of his BHF Nurses Katy
Stimson, was born with pulmonary atresia, which
means he has no pulmonary valve in his heart, leading
to insufficient blood flow to his lungs. Although he is
only 5, Jacob has undergone eight operations to try to
repair his heart. In January 2009, he had surgery that
has successfully helped increase blood flow to his lungs.
The BHF has funded surgery for children with heart
defects.
Lisa Carr, Jacob’s Mum, writes: “Katy Stimson and the
other nurses fill me with confidence and are always just at
the end of the phone. They have
known Jacob since he was born
and understand him and his
condition. The nurses have been
great in providing advice and
encouragement without being
overpowering.”
The BHF has two great websites
for children, cbhf.net for under
11s and yheart.net for over 11s.
These sites tackle the issues of heart
health in a way children and young
people can understand and relate to.
teachers new ideas, whilst involving parents.
Y Helps pre-school teachers and group leaders across
the UK provide opportunities for children to develop
several of the Physical Development requirements of
their respective curriculums for children aged 3 - 8
years old.
