named, was a charter 

member of the MC 

Foundation Board and 

served from 1974-1992. 

He also served on the 

Board of Trustees from 

1969-1980 and was 

President for one term. 

Celeste and Murray 

began giving to MC in 

1974. Since then, they 

have helped fund construction 

of the Aaron Medical 

Sciences Building, the 

Advanced Technology 

Center and the Fox 

Science Building. Their 

family foundation, the 

Fasken Foundation, 

established the Fasken 

Top 5% Scholarship, the 

Fasken Foundation 

Scholarship and also contributed 

to early campus 

construction in 1975. The 

Fasken Foundation also 

contributed to the Williams 

Regional Technical 

Training Center in Fort 

Stockton, the Petroleum 

Professional Development 

Center, and the Alcohol 

and Drug Abuse

Quietly providing a 

future for thousands 

J. Robert Jones, who passed away this past April, and his late wives, Jan K. Jones (left) and 

Marian Jones (right), in whose names he established the Marian and Jan K. Jones Scholarship in 2001 

Since J. Robert Jones began his generous funding of the Marian and Jan K. Jones 

Scholarship in 2002, over 340 students have attended Midland College with his help—students 

who otherwise might not have been able to pursue higher education. 

Mr. Jones passed away on April 11, but his gift to Midland College will live on for a very 

long time. “Education was very important to him,” says Mary Ann Dzubinski, Executor of Mr. 

Jones’ estate, “and he really wanted to help kids become successful in life. He knew education 

was their road to success.” 

Mr. Jones had macular degeneration in his final years, but that did not damage his zest for 

life, his joy in engaging in the world around him, and his desire to stay up on current events. At 

95—though he could no longer see well enough to read—he was still very sharp, “ … the 

sharpest man I have ever known,” says Ms. Dzubinski, who brought him his favorite magazines 

on tape, and enjoyed discussing current events with him. Ms. Dzubinski fondly remembers her 

long talks with Mr. Jones, and one in particular about education, and how she and her three children 

all were able to attend college because of scholarships. Mr. Jones was so inspired by the 

impact of giving to help someone achieve an education, that he set up the Marian and Jan K. 

Jones Scholarship in honor of his two late wives. “He was such a very, very gentle man, very 

proper and he disliked notoriety,” Ms. Dzubinski said, “so he thought the best way to give would 

be in a memorial to his wives.” He was married to his first wife, Marian, for 46 years. In 1984, 

he married Jan Knickerbocker, with whom he shared his life until her death in 1999. 

Over the next ten years, the financial gifts from Mr. Jones towards the Marian and Jan K. 

Jones Scholarship will total roughly $9 million, the largest single gift ever given to Midland 

College. “Midland was his favorite city and he wanted to do something to help the people of 

Midland,” says Ms. Dzubinski. Mr. Jones certainly did help the people of Midland, and so much 

more—he has secured an education for countless students for many generations to come.

Beverly Pevehouse honored by Girl Scouts 

and National Multiple Sclerosis Society 

On Tuesday, March 20, Midland College Foundation Board 

member Beverly Pevehouse was honored at the All 

America Chapter, West Texas Division of the National Multiple 

Sclerosis Society’s Dinner of Champions, as the 2007 Hope 

Award Recipient. This highest honor, the Hope Award, is presented 

to recognize “Champions” who are “involved in, and 

committed to, community affairs and who are leaders among 

their peers.” 

On Thursday, March 29, Ms. Pevehouse was given another 

award, this time by the Girl Scouts of the Permian Basin who

honored her as a “Woman of Distinction” for her service to the Permian Basin community. 

Ms. Pevehouse was president of the MC Foundation Board from 2000-2005. Her role 

at MC continues the legacy of her husband, Joe, who passed away in 1992, and who was a 

founding member and first President of the Foundation Board. Beverly and Joe Pevehouse 

have supported the college through gifts of more than $2 million. The Pevehouse 

Administration Building was named in the couple’s honor in 1997.

William “Bill” Marshall 

was born in Los Angeles, had 

offers to work in Venezuela, 

Libya and Madagascar, but 

has chosen to make Midland his home. 

His service to the community, and his 

outstanding work in the petroleum industry 

earned him induction into the 

Petroleum Hall of Fame on April 26. 

Bill Marshall joined the firm of 

Marshall & Winston, with his father, Sam 

Marshall, and Don Winston, in 1958. He 

then settled in Midland and was elected 

president of Marshall & Winston in 1967. 

He shifted the company’s activities from 

royalty trading into more active drilling, 

purchasing drill sites that were often successful. 

Today, Marshall & Winston operate 

in Texas, New Mexico, Alabama, 

North Dakota, Mississippi and Wyoming.

PGA Contribution 

to 

MC Golf Program 

David Chad 

Campbell—former 

MC student and now 

champion golfer—recently 

designated a $25,000 contribution to MC’s 

Golf program. The money, given by the PGA 

of America, came from the 36th Ryder Cup, held 

last September at the K Club in Straffan County 

Kildare, Ireland. As a Ryder Cup Team 

Member, Campbell was able to select Midland 

College to receive funding for the “Golf: For 

Business and Life” program. The program is the 

PGA’s college initiative designed to teach and 

improve the golf skills of students through 

instruction provided by PGA professionals, and 

to suggest ways in which the students can use 

golf as a business tool as they enter the professional 

world. This initiative is already underway 

in MC’s golf program.

he Ben Blake Endowed Scholarship has been established in honor of Benjamin 

LaRay Blake, who passed away in February of 2006 after giving much to the 

Midland community during his 28 years of residence here. 

Since 1983, Mr. Blake worked for Barbara Fasken, and later for her Family Trust and 

Limited Partnership, now known as Fasken Oil and Ranch, Ltd. He was the Assistant 

General Manager and Chief Financial Officer of Fasken Oil, and served as a trustee of 

several Fasken family trusts. He also served as Chairman of the Prairie Foundation’s 

Grants committee, in which his actions benefitted many people in the community. He was greatly 

respected for his wisdom and knowledge, and appreciated for his patient and gentle manner. 

The Ben Blake Endowed Scholarship will assist Midland College students who are majoring in 

accounting.

The Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest Awards 

Ceremony was held on April 19 and awards were given to 

four students for their poetry. First place was awarded to 

Kathryn Bookhammer for her poem, “Material Cult.” Second 

place went to Jaime Piña for his poem, “Up and Over.” Sarah 

Banschbach won third place for her poem, “Bayeaux.” 

Courtney Owens won fourth place for her poem, “Ode to You.” 

Selected writings from the contest will also be published in 

Tableau, a Midland College student-published magazine. The 

contest judge and guest speaker was Russian poet Ilya 

Kaminsky, who read from his award-winning poetry collection, 

Dancing in Odessa. 

The contest is in its 19th year and carries one of the largest 

cash awards of any college poetry contest in the country. The 

contest is named for Hilda Simmons Levitt, who studied creative 

writing at Midland College while staying actively involved 

in the community. After her death in 1986, her husband, Stanley 

Levitt, established the Hilda Simmons Levitt Poetry Contest in 

loving memory of his wife. Mr. Levitt died in 1994, and the 

couple’s daughter, Carol Schwartz, continues to underwrite the 

contest.

Awards Reception 

The Midland College Students in Philanthropy (SIP) hosted their 

annual Grant Awards Reception on April 18. This 2007 

reception marks the 10th anniversary of Students in Philanthropy. 

Since its inception, a total of 263 Midland College students have 

participated in the program. 

This spring of 2007, SIP received and reviewed 27 grant 

applications and funded 17 organizations for a total of $20,624 in 

grant awards. Since its inception, the club has reviewed a total of 298 

grant applications, resulting in 165 grants funded, for a total of 

$187,003 in monies raised and awarded to area nonprofit agencies. 

Grant recipients this year include COM Aquatics who received 

$3,000—the largest individual grant ever given by MC’s SIP Club to 

an organization—for an automatic door for their handicapped and 

senior members. 

The Midland College Students in Philanthropy Club was 

established in 1997 by the Abell-Hanger Foundation. In December of 

2006, the Helen Greathouse Charitable Trust joined to help fund the 

SIP Club. Members learn the importance of philanthropy and the role 

of nonprofit organizations in the community. They also gain 

leadership and stewardship training through a structured program 

designed to educate, support and promote philanthropic leadership in 

the community.

His daughter, Bahola Edwards, is the 

Assistant to the President and Secretary 

to the Board of Trustees. Mr. Barrandey 

was also the uncle of Elsa Barrandey, Secretary to the

Australian Musical Sensation

The Ten Tenors met while pursuing opera studies at Brisbane, 

Australia’s Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Performing 

together in operas, recitals, and concerts, they shared camaraderie 

like college friends from any discipline. Despite their enjoyment 

of the serious pursuits they were engaged in on-stage, they realized 

that they derived their greatest pleasures backstage in creating 

their own comedic musical fun. 

After performing at corporate galas throughout their university 

days, The Ten Tenors finally did what they had always joked 

about—they created a show full of fun, cheeky camaraderie, but 

mostly, truly beautiful music. Clearly, it was a risk that paid off. 

What they began kept growing and growing. With relentless touring 

through the Australian Outback, they honed their skills in 

music and comedy. 

In 2005, The Ten Tenors enjoyed sellout shows in Australia, 

Europe and North America; an appearance on the red carpet for 

the 57th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards and later at the 

Governor’s Ball; an appearance on The Tony Danza Show; and a 

Platinum Record award for the Australian release of their “best 

of” album Tenology. Their concert, taped live in Brisbane, 

Australia continues to air on public television stations throughout 

the United States and the world.

en Burns was the director, producer, co-writer, chief cinematographer, 

music director and executive producer of the 

landmark television series, The Civil War. This film was the highest 

rated series in the history of American Public Television. The 

New York Times called it a masterpiece and said that Ken Burns 

“takes his place as the most accomplished documentary filmmaker 

of his generation.” 

In January 2001, Jazz, the third in Burns’ trilogy of epic documentaries, 

which began with The Civil War and continued with 

Baseball, was broadcast on PBS. This 19-hour, ten-part film 

explores in detail the culture, politics and dreams that gave birth 

to jazz music, and follows this most American of art forms from 

its origins in blues and ragtime through swing, bebop and fusion. 

Tom Brokaw wrote, “Jazz is a masterpiece of American television.” 

Burns is considered one of our most gifted and prolific filmmakers 

today. He has made many award-winning films including 

Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson and Lewis and Clark: The Journey 

of the Corps of Discovery. Burns first appeared at Midland 

College in 2000, so his presentation this fall is a return engagement 

to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Davidson 

Distinguished Lecture Series, which was endowed by Steve 

Davidson and Susan Davidson McClenahan of the Davidson 

Family Charitable Foundation.

“Collapse,” at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center on April 12. Dr. Diamond’s talk was inspired by his 

latest, best-selling book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, in which he cites five factors that 

determine a society’s chances for survival. In his talk, Dr. Diamond dismantled previous ethnocentric explanations 

for the fall of civilizations and, instead, focused on ecological factors.

Pat Myers, Program 

Director of Vocational 

Nursing program at MC 

from 1970 until her retirement in 1999, 

died Sunday, March 11, 2007. 

Patricia was born on October 14, 

1935 in Goldthwaite, Texas to Cecil D. 

Bryan, of Hamilton, Texas and A. 

Mozelle Duncan of Cooper, Texas. She 

attended Shannon School of Nursing in 

San Angelo for three years where she 

received her R.N. degree in 1957. She 

then attended West Texas University for 

two years, where she received her 

Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. 

She worked at Bexar County 

Hospital in San Antonio for six years in 

the nursing field. In 1959 she married 

Forrest Ray Myers, Jr. in San Antonio. 

They then moved to Midland in 1963 

where Pat was the Director of Nurses at 

Parkview Hospital for four years. She 

then became the Director of the 

Vocational Nursing program at Midland 

College where she remained for 31 years, 

retiring from nursing in 1999.

Midland College lost a beloved family member April 20 when 

Chloice Shofner passed away at the age of 74 at his home in Waller, 

Texas. 

Shofner’s career as an Economics teacher at Midland College 

began in 1969 after he received his Master’s of Business 

Administration (MBA) degree from Texas Tech University. Shofner actually had two 

stints at MC, one from 1969-1976 and one from 1984-2005. 

Shofner was a favorite teacher among students and faculty, perhaps because he 

treated teaching like a vocation. “Teaching is almost like being a pastor,” Shofner 

said. “You pretty much have to be called. I enjoy helping students understand what life 

is all about. Students’ interest to continue and succeed is worth everything. That’s why 

I teach.”

The Doctor’s Day Story 

What originally began as an organized “thank you” to the 

doctors of Midland by the Midland Medical Alliance, 

ultimately became a huge gift for Midland College’s Health 

Science students in 2001 … and still continues today! 

The “Doctor’s Day Observance” is the brainchild of Edna 

Hibbitts, who suggested that patients could show their appreciation 

for their doctors by making donations of $10 or more in 

their doctor’s name to Midland College. So, the Midland 

Medical Alliance Doctor’s Day Health Sciences Scholarship 

was established and funded by these contributions from the 

community. The scholarship is available to all full-time Health 

Sciences students who maintain a 3.0 GPA, or above. 

This past February, 262 participants contributed funds for 

a total of $18,765. Since its inception, the program has raised a 

total of $85,845 to assist MC’s Health Sciences students.

The new Academic Building construction as of May 8 

As of May 8, 2007, the new pedestrian safety sidewalk 

encircling Chaparral Circle is complete, as 

well as the new Maintenance Facility. The foundation 

has been poured for two of the three sections of the 

Academic Building, and structural steel erection continues. 

Science II construction has commenced with 

Mid-Tex of Midland as the contractor. Renovation of 

the Cogdell Learning Center has begun, a process 

which includes construction of a new Welcome Center, 

a public-access computer lab, upgraded classrooms, 

new courtyards and exterior enhancements.

Scholarship. This scholarship was established by longtime Midlander 

Ella Mae Dalious, in honor of her husband Jack Dalious, who died in 

1996. This scholarship benefits academic programs and provides golf 

scholarships for students of high academic achievement. 

Another gift of $24,000 was also given on behalf of the Ella Mae 

Dalious Estate to the Dr. Gregory Bartha Health Sciences 

Scholarship. Hundreds of students in seven MC Health Sciences programs—Diagnostic 

Medical Sonography, Emergency Medical Services, 

Health Information Technology, Associate Degree Nursing, 

Radiography, Respiratory Care, and Vocational Nursing—are eligible to 

apply for the Bartha Scholarship.
