14 Terry Fox Run September 10, 2012 Dear Parents: Once again, Thornlea SS is pleased to be hosting its annual Terry Fox Run/Walk on September 27, 2012. All monies raised through our event will be forwarded to the Terry Fox Foundation to further the cause of cancer research. Our walk/jog/run route will be entirely on school grounds and will consist of a 5 km circular course. Teachers, students, and parents will be on hand to supervise and assist participants along the way. All students will be taking part in this worthwhile event. A pledge sheet is provided and we ask that you sign the sheet as permission for your son/daughter to participate. We also invite you to participate by walking, jogging, or cheering for your children as they complete the course. If required, extra pledge sheets will be available in the Phys. Ed. office. We are very proud to be associated with the Terry Fox Foundation and believe that our involvement will launch a successful, positive, and meaningful school year. We are very proud of our contribution to cancer research; to date, almost $121,200.00 has been raised by the pupils in this school community for cancer research since 1989. You will be interested to note that the Foundation works very hard to continue the downward trend in overall expenses, boasting a 13% operating cost (fundraising and administration). We would appreciate the involvement of the School Council and the parent community for our event. If you would like to volunteer and help out at the event, please contact Wayne Tsujiuchi (Phys. Ed. 15 October 2012 Please note the groups that will be starting up in the month of October. EFFECTIVE PARENTING- A four session group to help parents learn what they can do to raise a happy, motivated and well behaved child. For parents of children ages 2 to 11 years. Topics include: how to; nurture self esteem, encourage problem solving, increase communication and setting limits. Thursdays October 4/12 at The Promenade Mall- suite # 313. SUCCESSFUL STEP PARENTING - A four session group for couples living in blended families wanting to discuss building a solid couple relationship, the myths and realities of step-families, and helping kids to adjust to step-family life. Wednesday October 10/12 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at The Promenade Mall- suite # 313. MIND, BODY, CONNECTION for Women: Join us in an 8 session group for women who want to learn mindfulness and meditation in a safe and supportive group setting. Topics will include: stress and anxiety reduction, connecting with your mind and body, enhancing your self worth and self esteem, and learning about general relaxation and happiness. Wednesday October 17/12 at 35 Madison Ave from 3 to 4:30 p.m. OR Thursday October 25/12 at 4600 Bathurst St.- Lipa Green Centre from 7 to 8:30 p.m. YOUNGER WIDOW/WIDOWER BEREAVEMENT GROUP- A six session discussion series for individuals 60 and under who have recently lost a spouse. Topics include: coping with grief, living with loneliness and new beginnings. Tuesday October 23/12 at 4600 Bathurst St- Lipa Green Centre from 7:30 to 9 p.m. New- Understanding Anxieties and Learning Disabilities in Children- A one session introductory workshop for parents and/or professionals wanting to gain an understanding of the different types of anxiety, approaches to treatment and the relationship between anxiety and learning disabilities. Wednesday October 24/12 at 4600 Bathurst St.- Lipa Green Centre from 7 to 9 p.m. WHEN YOU’RE ABOUT TO SEPARATE: WHAT TO TELL THE KIDS- A workshop for parents about to separate or in the early stages of separation. How and when to tell the children as well as ideas and strategies to best meet your child’s needs will be discussed. Thursday October 25/12 at 4600 Bathurst St- Lipa Green Ctre. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. ADULT CHILDREN LOSING A PARENT- A six session group for adult children who have recently lost a parent. Topics include: coping with grief, loss and legacy and resolving unfinished business. Tuesday October 30/12 at 4600 Bathurst St.- Lipa Green Centre. from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. WIDOW/WIDOWERS 65+ BEREAVEMENT- A six session daytime group for men and women over 65 years who have recently lost a partner or spouse. Topics to be discussed may include: coping with grief, living with loneliness, changing relationships, and new beginnings. Wednesday October 31/12 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at 4600 Bathurst St- Lipa Green Centre. As with all of our programs, registration is required. Our groups and workshops are open to all members of the community regardless of cultural, religious and/or racial background and fee reductions are available.
