Spring 2010Thornlea S.S. Library Spring 2010 Citation Guidelines for Common Print & Electronic Sources [with formulae]Page Set-Up Criteria:A List entries alphabetically by author’s last name. If author’s name is not available, alphabetize by firstword of title of work. Alphabetize titles beginning with A, An, or The by the second word of the title.B Italicize the title of each ‘whole’ work (resource). Enclose within quotation marks a title of an article,chapter, section, (etc.) contained within a larger work.C Give your resource list the centred title: Works CitedD TYPE the Works Cited on a clean (no other information) 8-1/2”X11” sheet of unlined paper.E Be sure to record all required information (requirements differ for each resource type) accurately,in correct order & format, with correct punctuation (commas, periods, colons, capitalization), and withcorrect use of italics, & spacing.F Spacing: Leave 2 spaces after a period or colon, and 1 space after comma. (DON’T centre-justify text).G Indent 5 spaces on 2 nd , 3 rd (etc.) line(s) of each citation. (This is called a “hanging indent”).H Single-space within citations and double-space between citations.I Show access dates (the date you read/printed information) for all online and world wide web sources.J Do not number citations.K Do not use subheadings to classify resource types/citations.L URLs must be in same font size/format/colour/style as rest of citation and should not be underlined,(remove hyperlink).M At the right of each citation, hand-write the number of the ‘sample citation’ you followed, (e.g. 1b, 3a)N For in-text citation (embedded or parenthetical reference within the body of your essay or report) useformat shown in brackets next to each resource heading. Remember, both paraphrased and quotedmaterial need to be cited in the body of the paper!O To the right of each citation in WC, type in red font the number of Sample Citation you followed (e.g. 6a)1.
