Vertical Asymptotes
To find vertical asymptotes
look for values ofxwhich make the denominator zero
Example: Consider the function
f(x) = 5x3 +4x−8
x 3 −2x 2 −3x
Find the vertical asymptotes of f(x)
Solution: Factor the denominator:
x 3 −2x 2 −3x = x(x 2 −2x−3) = x(x−3)(x+1)
So vertical asymptotes are:
x = 0,x = 3, x = −1
