Alumni Album - The Blake School

The annual Reunion Weekend party for
alumni took on a tailgating atmosphere
this year. The event was held on the
loggia overlooking the football field,
giving alumni the opportunity to cheer
on the Bears while reconnecting with
former classmates.

The Mill City Museum in Minneapolis
provided the backdrop for this year’s
holiday party. Alumni, faculty and staff
were invited to share good cheer while
taking in the museum’s exhibits and a
tour of the famed Flour Tower.

Alumni games
Blake Bears of all ages are famous for their
athletic prowess and love of sport. So every
year around the holidays, former Blake
athletes make their way back to campus
to relive the thrill of competition and the
camaraderie of teammates.
1. After their match up against the varsity
team, young alumni stayed around to
compete in their own young alum vs.
young alum showdown.
2. Basketball alumni from the classes of
2001 through 2011 returned to the Blake
campus gymnasium to shoot hoops (and
the breeze) with one another.
3. Unseasonably warm weather in
Minnesota prevented Blake’s alumnae and
varsity girls’ hockey team members from
holding their annual skate on Woodhill
Pond, but it didn’t stop them from
gathering to share some holiday cheer.
4. Young alumni took on Blake’s 2011-12
boys’ varsity hockey team at Blake’s ice
arena.
5. Blake’s older alumni looked particularly
distinguished when they faced off on the
ice.

One hundred years ago this past fall,
Blake’s first football team traversed
the river into St. Paul to face off in a
match against St. Paul Academy (SPA).
On “a field slick with ice better suited
to hockey than football,” according to
Blake head coach Tracy Hale, the two
teams could not have anticipated that
this game would establish the longest
known high school football rivalry in
Minnesota history.
To mark the milestone 100th
anniversary, Blake hosted SPA in a
commemorative game between the
schools’ current football teams.
1. The boys who began it all: Blake
School’s first football team played its
final game of the first season against
St. Paul Academy on November 3, 1911,
establishing the longest known high
school football rivalry in Minnesota.
2. Blake’s 2011 football team had the
honor of playing SPA in the 100th
anniversary game.
3. Blake alumni line up to cheer on their
players as they take to the field. The
team sported brown and white retro
jerseys to reflect the 1911 school colors.
4. Tom Heffelfinger ’66 (at right) and
Howard McMillan III ’76 (at left) served
as the honorary team captains for the
Blake side. Heffelfinger represents
three generations of football at Blake
and is the grandnephew of F. Peavey
Heffelfinger ’16, who was a member
of the 1911 football team. McMillan’s
grandfather, Howard McMillan Sr.,
played for the 1911
football team.
5. Blake and SPA get ready to face off.
The final score was 49-8 in favor of the
Bears. One hundred years earlier the
final score was 8-0 in favor of the Bears,
according to Blake records and a news
report published the following day.
6. Retro Blake jerseys were available
during a silent auction held on the Spirit
Plaza the day of the game.
