approximately 568 acres, with Powerton Lake<br />

covering roughly 1,426 additional acres. Powerton<br />

Lake is managed by the Department of Natural<br />

Resources and is open to the public for recreational<br />

purposes.<br />

Operations<br />

Fuel<br />

Coal fired boilers produce steam that operates the<br />

turbine generators. Electricity produced by the<br />

generators goes out on transmission lines for<br />

distribution to commercial, retail and industrial<br />

customers.<br />

Coal received by unit train delivered by the Illinois &<br />

Midland Railroad from interchange points with the<br />

Union Pacific or Burlington Northern/Santa Fe.<br />

Railcars are unloaded using an inline rotary car<br />

dumper.<br />

Ameren CILCO provides natural gas to Powerton<br />

for ignition.<br />
