A: She died in 1933. I can remember my dad going back to Iowa once in a

A: Oh, I was always closer to my mother hen she was living. Of course,
when my mther died, my dad and I =re together. He got me a job at the
coal mine. See, I started wrk.ing in the coal mine when I was sixteen
years old.

A: k11, I got a job on the night shift delivering material. At that
time, they =re still hand loading ad black powder and everything. I
used to deliver powder and drive a mle. I used to drive that old mle
out, the fastest mle in the mine. I drove a lot of rmles, yes.

A: In 1928. September the 26th.

that have been when you started
A: Or September 6. My sister started teach* school. She was already
out of high school in 1928, and she started teaching school right out of
h@ school. She started teaching grade school in Wilsonville, Illinois,
and I can rerrwnberr that year. I know exactly what she got, she got $728
for teaching school. At that time, that ws the salary for the whole
year*
A: I made mre than that in the coal mine, of course. kt w h mre,
