Silver Fleur-De-Lis Award
Greater Louisville Inc. created the Silver Fleur-De-Lis Award as a way to recognize
outstanding achievement during the past year. The award illustrates what’s possible
in our community when we all work together. Please join GLI in congratulating the
following 2008 honorees for their dedication.
Every 1 Reads - This collaborative effort between the business, government and
education communities was launched in 2004 with the audacious goal of having every
Jefferson County Public School student reading at grade level within four years.
The school system approached the challenge with unblinking determination, the business community
raised $8 million to fund the effort, community-based organizations trained their staffs and volunteers and
adapted their programming and more than 10,000 individuals completed training and tutored a student.
The results are a significant improvement in literacy rates…with 91% of students now reading at
grade level. Every 1 Reads also serves as a national model for the development and execution of a
comprehensive community vision for increasing
educational attainment.

Thomas A. Edison Award
The Thomas A. Edison Award is presented to former Louisvillians who has
achieved personal and professional success while continuing to support
the Greater Louisville community. The 2008 recipient of the Thomas A.
Edison Award is Dean Fearing, Chef and Partner, Fearing’s Restaurant.
Long known as the ‘father of southwestern cuisine’ Chef Dean Fearing
was born in Ashland, Kentucky. Dean came to Louisville to pursue a
degree in the Culinary Arts at Jefferson Community and Technical
College (JCTC). It was during his time at JCTC that Dean met his mentor,
Chef Harvey Colgin who encouraged him to attend the Culinary Institute of America. He
later went on to serve stints at the La Maisonette in Cincinnati and the Pyramid Room at the
Fairmont in Dallas.
After 20-plus years at the Mansion on Turtle Creek, Dean opened Fearing’s in August 2007 at
the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas. Named “Restaurant of the Year” and “Table of the Year” by Esquire
Magazine shortly after opening and named No. 1 in Hotel Dining in the U.S. by Zagat just
15 months later; Fearing’s has created quite a buzz with distinct dining venues, a spectacular
farm-to-market seasonal menu, and personal presence of Fearing himself.
GLI/Mayor’s Healthy Hometown
Worksite Wellness Award
Since its inception in 2004, the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement
(MHHM) has worked to create a new culture in Louisville where physical
activity and good nutrition are the norm. Focusing on the health and
wellness practices of companies across the region, the MHHM partnered
with Greater Louisville Inc. to present the first ever Worksite Wellness
Awards.
Businesses and organizations with a currently active worksite wellness
program were encouraged to apply in three categories: small (1-249
employees), medium (250-999 employees), large (1000+ employees).
