<strong>Tile</strong> <strong>Trek</strong>: A <strong>Knight</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong> <strong>Manor</strong><br />

The result<strong>in</strong>g turmoil <strong>in</strong>spired tales <strong>of</strong> horror for<br />

miles around, delight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> devils and br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

shame upon those who still lived <strong>in</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong><br />

<strong>Manor</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Orobius. Sadistically, his patrons<br />

made him fully aware <strong>of</strong> each crime committed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> sibl<strong>in</strong>gs and cous<strong>in</strong>s whose souls he had helped<br />

to corrupt. He realized with dread that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong>s<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir heirs were forever cursed.<br />

Orobius reta<strong>in</strong>ed his arcane powers, but he never<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> left <strong>the</strong> manor, and those few relatives who also<br />

stayed spent what was left <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong> fortune<br />

on reparations for <strong>the</strong> victims <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir nefarious k<strong>in</strong><br />

and on fortifications to <strong>the</strong> crypts beneath <strong>the</strong> manor.<br />

They feared that vengeful people or, worse, evil <strong>Shadowghast</strong>s<br />

would one day seek to corrupt or disturb<br />

<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir honored ancestors.<br />

Orobius spent his f<strong>in</strong>al years <strong>in</strong> misery, despite <strong>the</strong><br />

fact that he had been forgiven by <strong>the</strong> family members<br />

who rema<strong>in</strong>ed. When he died, <strong>the</strong> last virtuous members<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>in</strong>terred his body <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crypts,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>n, nearly destitute, <strong>the</strong>y left <strong>the</strong>ir home and<br />

faded <strong>in</strong>to obscurity. Shadow ghast <strong>Manor</strong> has been<br />

unoccupied s<strong>in</strong>ce, and haunt<strong>in</strong>g reports <strong>of</strong> ghosts and<br />

shadowy creatures have guaranteed that only <strong>the</strong><br />

foolish ever venture near it.<br />

Until now. The clan’s current standard bearer<br />

<strong>in</strong> matters <strong>of</strong> corruption is Arturas <strong>Shadowghast</strong>, a<br />

charismatic blackguard <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> Asmodeus.<br />

After torment<strong>in</strong>g a neighbor<strong>in</strong>g region for years<br />

with dar<strong>in</strong>g attacks on temples and arcane libraries,<br />

Arturas and his small band came under assault<br />

from various militias. So, he led a retreat to his longabandoned<br />

ancestral home. His weary pursuers have<br />

tracked Arturas to <strong>Shadowghast</strong> <strong>Manor</strong>, yet <strong>the</strong>y lack<br />

<strong>the</strong> strength or <strong>the</strong> confidence to engage his band <strong>in</strong> a<br />

frontal assault.<br />

Has Arturas truly been cornered, though It has<br />

become apparent to <strong>the</strong> local authorities that <strong>in</strong> all<br />

likelihood Arturas’s “retreat” was <strong>in</strong>tentional. Perhaps<br />

<strong>the</strong>re is someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>side <strong>Shadowghast</strong> <strong>Manor</strong> that he<br />

wants. Adventurers must answer <strong>the</strong> call to f<strong>in</strong>ish <strong>the</strong><br />

job and br<strong>in</strong>g Arturas <strong>Shadowghast</strong> out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manor,<br />

dead or alive.<br />

The blackguard and his succubus ally, Lyrane,<br />

have negated <strong>the</strong> protective wards placed by his<br />

ancestors and are now busily prepar<strong>in</strong>g a dark ritual<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crypts below. A keen student <strong>of</strong> shadow magic<br />

and necromancy, Arturas has become conv<strong>in</strong>ced that<br />

by summon<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> spirits <strong>of</strong> Orobius and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> his<br />

ancestors, he can place <strong>the</strong>m under his command as<br />

wraiths and <strong>the</strong>n absorb <strong>the</strong>ir mystical power. His<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r allies are on alert <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manor proper, ready to<br />

kill anyone who tries to <strong>in</strong>terfere with <strong>the</strong>ir leader’s<br />

plan. Arturas also has reset some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manor’s orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

traps.<br />

Much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manor’s second floor has dis<strong>in</strong>tegrated,<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r from age or <strong>the</strong> fiery attacks <strong>of</strong> bitter<br />

townspeople. The ma<strong>in</strong> floor’s nor<strong>the</strong>astern entrance,<br />

through which Arturas’s group violently entered, has<br />

been boarded up, as have most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>vaders haven’t yet barricaded <strong>the</strong> southwestern<br />

entrance, largely because some <strong>of</strong> Arturas’s lackeys<br />

have been more <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> ripp<strong>in</strong>g apart <strong>the</strong> manor<br />

<strong>in</strong> search <strong>of</strong> hidden valuables.<br />

An iron fence 6 feet high extends around <strong>the</strong> property,<br />

about 20 feet away from <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g, but it’s<br />

broken and twisted <strong>in</strong> so many places that it <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

little h<strong>in</strong>drance. The only possible cover between <strong>the</strong><br />

fence and <strong>the</strong> manor is around a couple <strong>of</strong> small trees<br />

near <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>astern corner. Beyond <strong>the</strong> fence are<br />

gently roll<strong>in</strong>g hills.<br />

Synopsis<br />

Characters arrive at <strong>the</strong> pursu<strong>in</strong>g faction’s encampment<br />

just with<strong>in</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gates <strong>of</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong><br />

<strong>Manor</strong>. Local eyewitnesses claim that Arturas <strong>Shadowghast</strong><br />

entered <strong>the</strong> manor <strong>the</strong> previous day with his<br />

allies: a few human mercenaries, a human or half-elf<br />

female dressed <strong>in</strong> robes (<strong>the</strong> succubus), and several<br />

duergar. They had with <strong>the</strong>m a heavily laden wagon.<br />

After gett<strong>in</strong>g past archers at <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows and<br />

doors, <strong>the</strong> characters must vanquish <strong>the</strong> guards on<br />

<strong>the</strong> first floor. If <strong>the</strong> adventurers exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> first<br />

floor before enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> crypts, <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>d a letter<br />

Orobius <strong>Shadowghast</strong> wrote <strong>in</strong> his f<strong>in</strong>al days. In it, he<br />

described his dark deeds and his despair that his soul<br />

will never f<strong>in</strong>d absolution.<br />

The crypt door is powerfully warded, and a whirl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

blades trap protects <strong>the</strong> area nearby. The party’s<br />

entrance <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> crypts attracts <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>of</strong> Arturas’s<br />

new pet, a bloodfire ooze.<br />

Adventurers have little opportunity to rest, and<br />

once <strong>the</strong>y enter <strong>the</strong> crypts, <strong>the</strong>y encounter Arturas<br />

<strong>Shadowghast</strong> and Lyrane as <strong>the</strong> villa<strong>in</strong>s utter <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

syllables <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ritual. Blaz<strong>in</strong>g skeletons open fire on<br />

<strong>the</strong> adventurers, and three wraiths created from <strong>the</strong><br />

spirits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong>s jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> attack. The characters<br />

might be able to temporarily pierce through<br />

<strong>the</strong> madness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wraiths and conv<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> newly<br />

created undead to help restore <strong>the</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong><br />

name by attack<strong>in</strong>g Arturas and his allies.<br />

If <strong>the</strong> party fails, Arturas absorbs <strong>the</strong> wraiths’<br />

essence and emerges from <strong>Shadowghast</strong> <strong>Manor</strong> more<br />

powerful than ever before.<br />
