2. Crypt Entrance<br />

Combat Encounter Level 5 (1,100 XP)<br />

The characters enter <strong>the</strong> <strong>Shadowghast</strong> crypts, possibly<br />

trigger<strong>in</strong>g a glyph and a whirl<strong>in</strong>g blades trap,<br />

<strong>the</strong>reafter fac<strong>in</strong>g a bloodfire ooze.<br />

Light: None.<br />

Monsters/Traps: 1 tempest glyph (T), 1 whirl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

blades trap (W), 1 bloodfire ooze (B).<br />

Once <strong>the</strong> characters enter, read:<br />

The door to <strong>the</strong> crypts sw<strong>in</strong>gs open. Loud moans <strong>of</strong> pa<strong>in</strong><br />

echo from below. Down a short stairway is a small, stonetiled<br />

room that has burial niches <strong>in</strong> its walls.<br />

The tempest glyph goes <strong>of</strong>f if a character moves <strong>in</strong>to<br />

a square lower on <strong>the</strong> descend<strong>in</strong>g steps than it is. If<br />

a character moves adjacent to <strong>the</strong> mobile whirl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

blades trap (which drops from a hidden compartment<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceil<strong>in</strong>g), it triggers and rolls <strong>in</strong>itiative.<br />

Two control panels (P) are concealed with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

room (Perception DC 22 to f<strong>in</strong>d). If a character is<br />

adjacent to a revealed control panel, a successful DC<br />

blades trap (ignor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trap’s resist 5 all) and<br />

reduces its speed by 1.<br />

Lore: The night before, Arturas and Lyrane first<br />

attempted <strong>the</strong> necromantic, spirit-b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g ritual.<br />

This try did not go as planned. They used <strong>the</strong> blood <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>nocents, just as <strong>the</strong> ritual <strong>in</strong>structed, but when <strong>the</strong><br />

blood was spilled on <strong>the</strong> crypts’ shr<strong>in</strong>e, it bonded with<br />

<strong>the</strong> corpses <strong>of</strong> nearby <strong>Shadowghast</strong> family members,<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g a bloodfire ooze <strong>in</strong>to be<strong>in</strong>g. Fortunately for<br />

Arturas and Lyrane, <strong>the</strong> ooze <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ctively recognized<br />

<strong>the</strong>m as its creators and obeyed <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>structions.<br />

The villa<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong>n used it as a guardian as <strong>the</strong>y spent<br />

<strong>the</strong> night <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> crypts.<br />

Tactics: If ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> tempest glyph or <strong>the</strong> whirl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

blades trap is activated, <strong>the</strong> bloodfire ooze moves<br />

to <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior stairs to attack. If nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

be adjacent to <strong>the</strong> glyph). Three Successes: The trap is disabled.<br />

Failure (18 or lower): The glyph is triggered.<br />

trap triggers, <strong>the</strong> ooze waits until <strong>in</strong>truders are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

room before attack<strong>in</strong>g. (It senses <strong>in</strong>truders immediately<br />

due to its bl<strong>in</strong>dsight.)<br />

Arturas and Lyrane hear <strong>the</strong> traps trigger, and any<br />

ensu<strong>in</strong>g combat, but <strong>the</strong>y cont<strong>in</strong>ue with <strong>the</strong>ir ritual.<br />

half speed, it doesn’t take <strong>the</strong> –5 penalty to attack rolls,<br />

and it doesn’t grant combat advantage for squeez<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
