Former Eglin commander prepares to celebrate 104th birthday
By KARI C. BARLOW
Florida Freedom Newspapers
FORT WALTON BEACH
— Retired Air Force Col.
Joe Stanley might be turning
104 on Saturday, but he
hasn’t lost his touch with
the ladies.
The longtime resident
at Westwood Retirement
Resort smiled at Yoly Ostertag,
the executive director,
as she walked into
the sunny atrium Tuesday
afternoon.
“You’re looking great,”
Ostertag said, bending over
to give Stanley a hug.
“So are you!” he answered
with a grin.
“See, he can be a flirt,”
Ostertag joked as she patted
Stanley’s shoulder and
adjusted the hearing aid in
his left ear.
Seated in his wheelchair
and wearing a brown jacket
and matching pants, Stanley
chatted with well-wishers
and reminisced about
his long life.
He had just one thing to
say about living to be 104:
“It’s too damn old!”
Born Jan. 28, 1908, Stanley
grew up in Memphis,
Tenn., and joined the Army
Air Corps in 1935. Six years
later, he was stunned along
with the rest of the country
to learn about the attack on
Pearl Harbor.
“I remember the day,”
he said. “I had been on a
cross-country flight and I
landed in Little Rock, Ark.,
to refuel and they told me
about the attack. I said it
just couldn’t be, but of
course it was.”
He commanded a squadron
of B-17s during World
War II.
“It was a wonderful
plane, a real nice plane,”
he said.
Stanley said the smartest
move he ever made was
marrying his wife, Betty.
“She was one of those
people who saw the joy and
she also liked to shop.
there. … She was the type
He and Betty traveled
“It’s the best life there
is,” Stanley said. “We got to
travel all over the place. … I
was stationed in Egypt, Romania,
Berlin, Paris. Paris
was nice, but Vienna was
probably the nicest of all.”
at all of the military bases
this was the best of all of
them,” said Stanley, who also
was an avid swimmer. “It
was a wonderful job. I could
do so much in my efforts to
improve things. It was quite
a scope of responsibility.”
In May 1994, when he
was 86 and Betty was 90,
they moved into Westwood.
“As soon as we heard
Tech. Sgt. Mareshah Haynes | USAF
Members of the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard deliver the casket of retired Lt. Col. Luke
ARLINGTON, Va.
— Family members,
friends and fellow service
members gathered Jan. 20
here to honor the life and
contributions of an original
Tuskegee Airmen.
Retired Lt. Col. Luke
Weathers, 90, a member of
the 302nd Fighter Squadron
during World War
II, received full military
honors including an F-16
Fighting Falcon flyover by
113th Wing, an Air National
Guard unit of Washington,
D.C. The ceremony coincided
with the release of
“Red Tails,” a full-length
feature film chronicling the
challenges and victories of
the Tuskegee Airmen.
“The Tuskegee Airmen
were dedicated heroes
who gave so much for this
country,” said Brig. Gen.
Jeffrey Johnson, the 113th
WG commander. “It is an
honor to perform a flyover
for this brave American.”
With World War II veterans
like the Tuskegee
Airmen entering their
90s, the numbers of these
living history makers are
dwindling.
During a time of racial
segregation in America,
the Tuskegee Airmen, the
U.S. Army Air Corps’ first
black fliers, proved they
were just as qualified as
Area runners get ready for
50-mile run along the beach
By ANGEL McCURDY
Florida Freedom Newspapers
DESTIN — Mary Valdez’s
only concern for running a
50-mile race along the beach
is the wind. Other than that,
she’s ready to let the race
begin.
The 33-year-old is participating
in the Destin 50 Beach
Ultra on Feb. 19, which consists
of a 50K race and a 50-
mile relay race starting at 5
a.m. at Tops’L Resort.
“It’s a good distracter
since my husband just deployed
to Afghanistan for 18
months,” she said. “But I’ve
been consistently running
since 2010 – the difference
here is I’m running on the
beach, which makes it much
more of a challenge.”
The 33-year-old fitness
instructor runs almost daily,
but for two days she goes
long distance to prepare for
the race.
“I’ll do 20 miles one day,
but I’ve only done 10 on the
beach,” she said. “Doing this
is much different than being
on a trail. It’s a lot harder because
it puts a lot of pressure
on your muscles.”
Destin 50 Beach Ultra
When: Feb. 19 at 5 a.m.
What: A 50K race and a 50-mile race on the beach
Where: Tops’L Resort.
For more information visit www.destin50.com
The Crestview resident
has not decided if she wants
to wear tennis shoes or the
barefoot shoes, she has decided
that going barefoot is
not for her. The key, though,
to running on the beach is
finding the packed sand.
“I keep asking around,
but no one has told me what
the best shoe to wear it, I’ll
take suggestions though,”
Valdez said.
During the race, Valdez
keeps a bandana wrapped
around her wrist to wipe off
sweat and carries a protein
shake to keep her energized.
She expects the run will take
her about 10.5 hours.
Valdez is no stranger to
long distance runs, she has
previously done a 50-mile
trail run and completed a
100-mile run in 30 hours,
which she said was a little
slower than she’d like but
she was keeping pace with
her sister.
“I started doing this just
for weight loss and it just
snowballed into what it is
now,” she said. “I like the ultra
runs because it’s much
more laid back. Everyone is
friendly and we’re all doing it
for the same cause.”
All proceeds from the
event go to the Special Operations
Warrior Foundation
for families of special operations
personnel who died in
operational or training missions
and gives immediate
financial assistance to severely
wounded special operations
personnel and their
families.
“It appealed to me because
my husband is in special
operations and he’s been
injured twice before,” Valdez
said. “It’s a big deal.”
On combat patrol several
years ago, a U.S. soldier
suffered two attacks
from improvised explosive
devices in a 24-hour period.
The first one rattled him
and killed his buddy. The
second one blew him out of
unconscious.
The Army would medically
medical records showed
symptoms of traumatic
brain injury and post-traumatic
July mailing of 16,500 will
target the years 2006 and
2007. Finally, an October
mailing to 13,200 will reach
out vets separated in 2008
and 2009.
But eligible veterans
don’t have to wait for the
letter. They can apply now
to have their ratings reviewed.
All the information
they need already is available
online at: www.health.
mil/pdbr.
No rating can be downgraded,
but a lot is at stake
for those seeking an upgrade.
A rating below 30
percent resulted, at most,
in a severance payment.
A bump to 30 percent or
higher changes a veteran’s
status to disabled “retiree.”
That means a lifetime annuity,
access to military health
care for the retiree and
dependents, discount shopping
on base and more.
They also will get annuity
back pay to the date of
their original disability evaluation
board decision, less
an amount that must be
recouped equal to the value
of severance pay provided
at time of discharge.
Advocates for veterans
given low ratings since 9/11
had pushed for a direct
mailing. LoGrande also
did as early as two years
ago. Looking back, he said,
the PDBR probably wasn’t
ready for the response now
ahead.
“We neither had the
resources nor the manpower
at the time to do it.
And frankly, I don’t think
everyone was ready for us
to do that. Let’s just put it
that way,” he said, alluding
to resistance from on high
to a direct mailing immediately
after the PDBR began
operating.
Last summer, Udall’s
staff requested a briefing
on the PDBR and
the response rate from
veterans. LoGrande said
that, to date, outreach efforts
had focused on state
directors of veterans’ affairs
in California, Colorado,
Texas, Florida and Georgia,
where more than half of
the pool of eligible vets live.
Udall decided that wasn’t
good enough.
The senator wrote to
VA Secretary Eric Shinseki
that the population that
needed to be told about the
PDRB was all veterans “no
longer serving.” He asked
for VA’s help in a direct
mailing.
Shinseki responded in
October, asking Allison A.
Hickey, his under secretary
for benefits, to meet with
LoGrande to begin working
out details.
Udall this week
praised the interagency
cooperation.
“Now that the VA and
the PDBR have combined
forces, we are a step closer
to ensuring that disability
and retirement benefits
match the sacrifices this
generation of veterans has
made for our country,” he
said.
LoGrande said responses
to the first mailing will
tell the PDBR how it needs
to beef up staff, particularly
with more physicians who
must be trained on the VA
schedule of ratings and
schooled on how to apply
it to applicant files, many
of which contain extensive
medical histories.
The PDBR now has only
five fulltime physicians and
eight contract physicians
who have more limited duties
involving preparation
of files for board decisions.
LoGrande knows he’ll need
more docs, just not how
many.
PDBR already has a
backlog of 461 cases, defined
as those taking longer
to decide than the deadlines
set in current regulations.
The board expects to
have to rely heavily on the
military services to provide
more active or reserve
physicians to be trained for
PDBR case reviews and
decisions.
Of the mass mailing,
LoGrande said, it simply is
“the right thing to do,” regardless
of the work ahead
or cost to the government.
“If that veteran were my
son or my daughter, my
niece or nephew, or my
brother or sister, I would
want them to have that
opportunity.”
