Introduction
Welcome to the first edition of
Research, Creative and Scholarly
Activities at Penn State Abington.
This edition covers activities from
the calendar years 2010 and 2011.
We collected this information from
the Scholarly Activity Submission
Forms that were distributed last
fall and from Digital Measures, the
electronic FAR database that some
faculty were able to utilize this spring. Hence it is an incomplete
view of the work that has been done. However
it is important to begin to document what we do as
we try to build a program of Sponsored Research here
at the College. We will be producing an addendum
this fall, so please submit any additions that you have
for 2010 or 2011 to Eva Klein at ebz1@psu.edu.
A brief explanation about the organization and notation
contained in this monograph: We threw open a
wide net. Hence, unlike P&T dossiers and the like, we
are not distinguishing between refereed publications
and non-refereed. We are using broad categories such
as “Papers” and “Presentations.” As time goes on and we
have full participation and our processes more streamlined
we will be able to become more sophisticated
in our presentation. For now it was important to have
something in print to begin to show the breadth and
depth of the work that is being done by the faculty
here. You will note a small footnote number prior to
the name of the author who is the Penn State Abington
faculty member. Within the listing you will then see
the faculty rank of that person. When the publication
has multiple authors, the Penn State Abington faculty
member or members is/are listed in bold.
This is one of the initial steps in building a program of
sponsored research here at Penn State Abington. We
plan on producing this report on an annual basis. We
have also begun to publicize activities in other ways. Be
sure to check out the research blog at: http://abingtonresearch.wordpress.com
and our Facebook page,
at Penn Penn State Abington Research (http://www.
facebook.com/PennStateAbingtonResearch).
This is just the beginning!
This publication is available in alternative media on request. Penn State is committed to affirmative
action, equal opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce. Penn State encourages persons
with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of
accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact Eva Klein
at 215-881-7387 in advance of your participation or visit. U.Ed. ABO 13-016
1.1 Vonnegut, K., 1 Mustazza, L. (editor), (2010). Critical
Insights: Slaughterhouse-Five. Salem Press.
( 1 Distinguished Professor of English and American Studies).
Edited and with an introduction by Leonard Mustazza,
Distinguished Professor of English and American Studies
at Penn State Abington, this volume in the Critical
Insights series brings together some of the best classic
and contemporary criticism on Vonnegut’s famous novel.
Mustazza’s introduction describes the cultural moment in
which Slaughterhouse-Five appeared, and Sarah Fay, writing
forThe Paris Review, analyzes Vonnegut’s unique comic
sensibility.
For readers studying Slaughterhouse-Five for the first
time, a quartet of introductory essays provide a framework
for gaining a deeper understanding of the novel. Jerome
Klinkowitz first reviews the vicissitudes of the novel’s
reputation among critics, readers, and scholars. Kevin
Alexander Boon then demonstrates how Vonnegut borrows
techniques from film to hold together his fragmented
narrative. David Simmons compares Slaughterhouse-Five
with another classic antiwar novel, Joseph Heller’s Catch-22,
and Christina Jarvis explains how the Vietnam War and the
antiwar movement influenced both Vonnegut and Thomas
Pychon as they wrote their novels about World War II.
The volume then continues with a selection of classic
and contemporary essays. William Rodney Allen offers a
comprehensive overview of the novel and its composition,
and Donald J. Greiner, Jerome Klinkowtiz, and Maurice
J. O’Sullivan, Jr., all examine the autobiographical nature
of Slaughterhouse-Five and Vonnegut’s attempts to come
to terms with the events he witnessed in Dresden. James
Lundquist describes the formal techniques Vonnegut devised
to meet the challenge of writing about such an unimaginable
tragedy as Dresden, and Wayne D. McGinnis treats the novel’s
unusual structure, showing how its unresolved circularity
mimics the irresolution and circularity of death and time.
T. J. Matheson also offers an analysis of the novel’s formal
elements, concentrating in particular on how its first chapter
sets up the themes Vonnegut will follow throughout the book.
C. Barry Chabot also takes up Vonnegut’s treatment of death
and his perpetual comment on it, “so it goes,” and Hans
van Stralen examines Vonnegut’s postmodern renewal of
existentialist themes. The novel’s science-fiction elements are
treated by Arnold Edelstein, who argues that Billy Pilgrim’s
“time traveling” is actually a fantasy Billy concocted to escape
his memories and responsibilities, and Susanne Vees-Gulani
extends this argument in a psychoanalytic reading of Billy
and his creator. Dolores K. Gros Louis, Donald E. Morse, and
Leonard Mustazza find biblical allusions in the novel. Gros
Louis reads Billy Pilgrim as an ironic Christ figure, while
Morse draws parallels between the destruction of Dresden
and the book of Job, and Mustazza finds further connections
between Eden and the alien world Tralfamador. Joyce Nelson
makes a comparative analysis of the novel and its film
adaptation.
Rounding out the volume are a brief biography of Vonnegut,
a chronology of his life, and a comprehensive bibliography
of the major pieces of criticism on Slaughterhouse-Five for
readers wishing to study the novel in greater depth.
Capelotti, P.J., (2010). The Human Archaeology
of Space: Lunar, Planetary and Interstellar Relics of
Exploration. Jefferson, N.C., McFarland and Co.
( 1 Associate Professor, Anthropology)
A catalog of archaeological artifacts that have been left
behind in space as a result of human exploration, this work
describes the remnants of lost satellites, discarded lunar
rovers, depleted rockets, and various abandoned spacecraft.
The book is divided into three parts covering distinct but
interconnected issues of lunar, planetary, and interstellar
archaeology. In Parts I and II, individual chapters cover each
space mission and provide technical notes, and, in some
cases, images of the artifacts. Part III explores the archaeology
of mobile artifacts in the solar system and the wider
galaxy, looking particularly at the problems encountered
in attempting a traditional archaeological field survey of
artifacts that may remain in motion indefinitely.
1.5 Walsh, Q., 1 Capelotti, P.J. (Editor) (2010). The
Whaling Expedition of the “Ulysses” 1937-38. University
Press of Florida.
( 1 Associate Professor, Anthropology)
In the spring of 1937, Coast Guard Lieutenant Quentin
Robert Walsh received a special assignment aboard the
whaling factory ship Ulysses. His orders were to monitor
the commercial operation’s compliance with international
agreements protecting marine life, and what he observed
shocked him.
The Ulysses flew the American flag, but Walsh quickly
2
Research, Creative and Scholarly Activities

ealized that the venture was a foreign affair intent on
harvesting whales of illegal size and importing the resulting
whale oil duty-free into the U.S. market. This behemoth
floating “factory” killed with appalling efficiency in order to
reap tremendous profits. Over 3,600 whales were butchered
during the ship’s ten-month cruise.
His report on the voyage--made widely available to the public
here for the first time--helped set the stage for current U.S.
policy in opposition to open sea whaling. Composed in an
elegant yet direct style, his account is both a straightforward
description of commercial whaling in the twentieth century
and a compelling argument against it.
Though he was later an eyewitness to the death and
devastation of D-day, Walsh maintained to the end of his life
that his experience aboard the Ulysses had been the most
horrifying he had ever endured.
