Heart O’ Dixie Region
Porsche Club of America
50 th Anniversary Celebration
Saturday, April 2, 2011
Heart O’ Dixie
Region
Porsche Club of America
Dear Porsche owner,
In 1955, Bill Scholar, the owner of a Porsche 356 Coupe, invited other Porsche owners to his
home and eventually organized a club; a Porsche Club of America, to promote the enjoyment
and sharing of goodwill and fellowship engendered by owning and enjoying this unique marque.
Within a couple of years, a second club was formed in the Chicago-Milwaukee region, then four
more in the northeast, then San Diego on the west coast, and a Gulf Coast Region in Mobile.
The PCA, recognized by the Porsche factory for their annual Parades where hundreds of
Porsches congregated in a different city each year, continued to grow across the nation.
There were 35 Regions on with the start of 1961, but since the Gulf Coast Region had disbanded,
no club covered the deep south states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, so Frederic Smith
of Birmingham partitioned PCA to form a club covering the heart of the deep south; a Heart O’
Dixie Region. Before that charter was issued on March 28 th , a Chattanooga Porsche Club also
petitioned to join PCA and this Tennessee Region chartered on April 15 th covered the eastern
half of Tennessee. The Heart O’ Dixie Region was left with the western half of Tennessee;
Nashville to Memphis, and the states of Alabama and Mississippi.
Porsche ownership has flourished in the Deep South with the Heart O’ Dixie Region migrating to
Huntsville in ‘68; spinning-off Birmingham’s Alabama Region in ‘70; Nashville’s Musik-Stadt
Region in ‘82; the Memphis Mid-South Region in ‘86; and the Mississippi Region in ‘87.
Although we’ve split into five clubs, the Heart O’ Dixie Region is still active after fifty years.
Fifty years; that’s a long time by any measure of longevity; long for people, long for Porsches,
and long for Clubs. Let’s face it, none of us were Porsche owners when the Club was formed in
1961 and it’s not likely that we’ll be very active with our Porsches for the Club’s 100 th
Anniversary in 2061. This is our only 50 th Anniversary, so let’s make the most of it!
You’re invited to help the Heart O’ Dixie Region celebrate its Golden Anniversary on Saturday,
April 2 nd , 2011 and we need you and your Porsche in our 100 Porsche Parade through the streets
of downtown Huntsville. Your reservation includes lunch at the historic 1859 Cedars Plantation
and dinner at the Huntsville Marriott.
The newly commissioned 50 th Anniversary Club Presidents and their Porsches plaque will be
on display along with our Charter and Anniversary Certificates. A 50 th Anniversary Grill Badge
will be presented to every parading Porsche. We’ve also minted Badges of our two previous
Club logos; the Tri-state Badge, 1961-82, and the Fuchs Wheel Badge, 1982-04. Both of these
historic badges will be for sale at the dinner.
Lastly, to help celebrate our historic heritage, we will present a multi-media display on the four
aspects of each decade of the club’s history from a Porsche, Porsche Motorsports, PCA, and
local Club perspective, narrated by previous Zone Reps, club officers, and club members. Our
Club is no better or stronger than its members and this celebration will likewise only be as good
as your participation and enjoyment. Please return this reservation form and come help us
celebrate! If you have several Porsches, bring them all to help us reach our Parade goal of 100!
