THE PARISH COUNCIL
Meets at 7.30pm on the third Wednesday of every month in Partridge Green Village
Hall Committee room, with the 2013 April and October meetings in the Dial Post
Village Hall. The public is very welcome, part of the meetings being thrown open to
comments, questions and requests. The Clerk to the Council will be pleased to include
any item on the Agenda if notified in advance. The Parish includes West Grinstead,
Dial Post and Partridge Green.
Chairmen of the various committees (see facing page) will be pleased to answer
questions pertaining to those committees. Members of the public are also welcome at

JOLESFIELD COMMUNITY CHOIR

Jolesfield School, Weds 7pm - 8.30pm (term time)
This is a choir for adults and children (minimum age 7), aimed at bringing our
community together to enjoy a wide range of music through singing. There are
NO auditions, and it does not matter how much singing experience you have.
There is a termly fee (equating to £2 per session) charged in advance to cover
the cost of music, photocopying etc. There is a short break during the evening
to socialise over a cuppa.

St George’s Parish Church Friday 7.30pm
St George’s Parish Church Choir, West Grinstead, has been singing for over 200
years. The Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Music and currently has about
16 regular members who sing for services as a four part choir. Members attend
courses locally and further afield, and combine with other choirs in the Horsham
area and in London on special occasions. Special musical occasions are Advent
Sunday, Christmas Eve, Good Friday and Harvest Festival. We will always gladly
welcome new members (senior and junior) whatever their age or experience.

ACTIVE MINDS ACTIVITY DAY CLUB

Active Minds Activity Club is for people with early stages of dementia in need of
activity, socialisation, motivation & stimulation to lift their well-being and regain
a sense of belonging and new friendship, also offering respite for the carers in
need of a temporary break.
The club offers meaningful, stimulating, therapeutic activities such as -
Singing , dancing, arts & crafts, painting, drawing, book reading, board games,
relaxation, mini sports, movement to music, short walk, singalongs, gardening,
stamp collecting, discussions, reminiscing and entertainment including visits
from the local museum and flower/photography club and much more, in a
caring, safe, sensitive to needs environment. Our main goal is to lift the wellbeing
of all members that attend. Refreshments are provided.

The girls (aged between 5 and 7) do craft activities, games and singing, and
also work on interest badges such as First Aid, Fire Safety, Brownie
Traditions and Artist. The girls can also take part in sleepovers, the most
recent one including a trip to the Science Museum in London. The girls work
together in their Six groups, and are encouraged to make decisions together
as a pack. Fundraising is important too, and each year the girls choose
which charity they would like to support.

The Countryside Rangers are based in Clapham Depot, near Worthing. They
look after the Downs Link long-distance bridleway, West Grinstead Old
Railway Station and a number of sites on the South Downs including Fairmile
Bottom LNR and Burton Mill Pond LNR. Visitors are welcome to all the sites
all through the year and should look out for guided walks and talks led by
the countryside rangers. It is worth noting though that the railway carriage
is currently only open on Sundays; special interest groups can arrange visits
by contacting the countryside rangers.

PGYFC are running 3 teams this season. The Under 12s play 11-a-side football in
Division B of the Horsham & District League and play their home games at Jolesfield
Common on Saturday mornings. The Under 10s play 7-a-side football in ‘The Hurst’
Division of the same league and play their home games at Jolesfield Common on
Saturday mornings. The Under 7s will be playing occasional friendlies at Jolesfield
School on Saturday mornings. All 3 teams train throughout the winter months at
Steyning Leisure Centre on Monday evenings from 5-6 p.m. and when the evenings
are lighter, at Jolesfield Common.
New members are always welcome, please contact the appropriate manager.
The Adult Section, for players 16 and over, is running 2 teams this season. The First
Team play in Division 2 North and the Second Team play in Division 5 Central of the
West Sussex League. Both teams play home games on Saturday afternoons, at KGV
Playing Fields until around November and then at Ashurst Recreation Ground in the
winter months. Training for both teams during the winter is on Monday evenings at
Steyning Leisure Centre from 8 p.m. until 9.30 and during the spring at KGV on
Tuesdays from 6.30 p.m. We also run a ‘Vets team’ for Over 35s who play friendly
games on Sunday mornings, about once a month. If you would like to become
involved with any of our teams, either as a player, coach, referee or enthusiastic
supporter, a warm welcome awaits.
All adult members become automatic members of Partridge Green Sports and Social
Club which is open for a drink and a chat every Saturday from 4 – 7 p.m.

FRIENDS OF ST GEORGE’S

FOSG is a group of people who care about St. George’s and its survival as a part of
our local heritage and as the Parish Church of West Grinstead. Established in 1997
the FOSG have raised and spent nearly £200,000 on projects that include
restoration of marble monuments and medieval wood panels, new lighting,
restoration of the medieval wall painting and the principal stained glass windows,
re-shingling the spire and more recently contributed to redecorating the interior.
Future projects include the provision of disabled toilets and a small kitchen to meet
health and safety requirements. The ‘Friends’ organise a range of social, musical
and intellectual events that support the life of the West Grinstead community
outside the religious aspect of the church. This beautiful Saxon church will be the
setting for several events that will be advertised in the Parish Newsletter. All are
welcome to these well publicised events.
For further information about the advantages of joining the ‘Friends’ please call the
chairman. The ‘Friends’ do not necessarily have to be involved in the religious life
of the church and a donation or regular contribution is all that is required to

FRIENDS OF ST MICHAEL’S

Our village church was built in 1890 at a cost of £2618. Needless to say it now
costs considerably more than this in maintenance every year. St. Michaels
Friends was formed in 2002 to help with the maintenance of the Church and to
encourage fellowship between the regular congregation and other users. Thanks
to your generosity and physical involvement we have been able and are
continuing to carry out much needed maintenance and improvement both to the
building and grounds and fellowship has been encouraged by several social
occasions each year.
The Church is for everyone and we would be very pleased if you would like to
join with the ‘Friends’ on our social occasions or even work parties. We have not
raised our subscription from £5 per annum since inception and hope this will be
no barrier, please contact our membership secretary and we look forward to

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Neighbourhood Watch is the largest voluntary organization in the UK. Over a
quarter of homes across the country are members, and they work with each
other and the police to reduce crime and increase community safety.
Each Neighbourhood Watch scheme is different, as it is tailored to the needs
of its members and the area in which they live. Scheme coordinators can
find out from local people what most concerns them and focus on particular
problems.
Neighbourhood Watch has changed with the times and no longer has the
image of ‘curtain twitchers’ or vigilantes. It is much more focused on the
community as a whole. For instance in Sussex we have two fully trained
NHW search teams (North Downs and West Downs) who help with missing
person incidents; their success rate is amazing.
Neighbourhood Watch is alive and well here in our parish and has been for a
number of years. It has the full support of the Parish Council and the
Neighbourhood Police Team. PC Martin Harris, our Neighbourhood Police
Officer, and James Josling, our PCSO, keep us informed about incidents in
the area via regular emails and visits.
Each scheme has a Street Coordinator who keeps the members informed
with updates and also seasonal and other advice. Then each area or village
has an Area Coordinator who acts as a link to the parent association, which
in our case is the Horsham District NHW. Then in turn there is a link to the
Sussex NHW Federation.
Any information we have about our members –names, addresses, contact
details – are secure under the terms of the Data Protection Act and cannot
be disclosed to a third party without written consent.
We are always looking for new members and also people willing to act as
street coordinators. If you would like more details please contact the area
coordinator, Roger Clarke, who will be pleased to help.

photographers and a trip to the local fire station. The group also provides for the
very young, so if you have a baby and/or a young child and wish to meet likeminded

Our fully qualified team provides a safe and happy environment for children to
learn while having fun and building relationships with other local children. We
have a large garden which the children have access to at all times during the
session, regardless of the weather. The environment is structured and well

ST CATHERINE’S HOSPICE – PARTRIDGE GREEN GROUP

Our Partridge Green Group has had another very successful year on the fundraising
side. Through the Blue Bag Scheme we have been able to supply the
Hospice with an almost continuous variety of items, and we have raised a
magnificent £27,490 so far, but the need for fresh stocks is ever present. Once
again, therefore, we ask you to continue supporting us by searching out your
unwanted, but saleable, items of clothing, jewellery etc. Empty Blue Bags are
always available from Thelma, though black plastic sacks or other bags can be
used as an alternative.
These are very difficult times for all Hospices, and St Catherine’s have asked us
to thank all of you who have contributed to the success of our Group over the
past year. PLEASE keep up the good work. Thank you all.

Formed to coordinate the activities of the four Sports Clubs Tennis, Stoolball,
Football and Cricket, and to run the bar and pavilion in King George V Playing
Fields, Partridge Green. If anyone in the village wants more information about any

player of sport, social membership is available. Please feel free to turn up on a
Saturday between 4-7pm.
STOOLBALL CLUB

The team plays from May onwards in the Central Sussex Stoolball League, plays

want to play; we are also keen to meet volunteer scorers and umpires.
