Principal’s Note
Dear Parents/Guardians October 1, 201 1
What a successful beginning to our school year 2012-2013! Students have
been enthusiastically working in classrooms and beginning their journey of
learning for this year. Teachers report that students are attentive and hard
working.
All our beginning of the year assessments have been given. Teachers have
worked in their grade levels to analyze data and determine small groups for
our I/E (Intervention and Extension) time. Two days a week will be devoted
to literacy and 2 days a week for numeracy. Teachers utilize several bodies
of evidence to construct the groups as well as formulate instructional pieces
for each group. Each grade level will have at least two more professionals to
aid with the I/E groups, making most of our groups smaller than 6 students.
Our SAC (School Accountability Committee) meets quarterly. Our first
regularly scheduled meeting will be on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 6:00-7:30
p.m. in the Media Center. Everyone is welcome to attend! Other dates include:
November 13, 2012, February 12, 2013, and May 7, 2013. Current
members of SAC: James Pritchett, Kathy Salazar, Elizabeth Hamlin, Andie
Kirkwood, Ingrid Burnham, Arden/Meg Nelson, Steve Gutting, and Roxann
Hall.
September 17, collaboration day, found all staff members working in collaborative
endeavors. PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports)
seemed to be a hot topic with various discussions
around playground duty and playground expectations. Ann Lawler-Perry,
Payton Schneider and Lesli Glenn are leading us in this year’s book study,
Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action by Stephanie
Harvey and Harvey Daniels. Every teacher must be evaluated every year
starting this year. You can imagine the amount of time and energy that will
go into these evaluations and observations. Judson Rhoads, our IB Coordinator,
keeps us entertained and fully apprised of where we stand with IB. Our
focus this year on IB should lead to great dividends when we expect to become
an IB World School sometime next school year.
Another large portion of our time was spent on Writing, First Quarter Prompt,
Rubrics, and the discussion of Cross Grade Level Grading of writing samples.
As you can see, we spent our time wisely and productively while your children
enjoyed a 3 day weekend!
The CLPE Music Department will benefit from Culver’s Night from 4:00-
7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 4 th . Bring your family and a portion of the
proceeds will help CLPE purchase new risers for performances. The PTO
sponsored Pirate Peg Leg Fun Run on Friday, October 12, 2012, is a much
anticipated event for adults and students alike! Prizes will be awarded to the
class who runs the most average laps K-2, and 3-5. Prizes for the most
money raised per class also will be awarded. Along with the class prizes,
there will be individual winners as well. PTO’s goal will be $4,000 for the
second annual Fun Run. We appreciate all the volunteers who will be helping
make this event a success. Parent/Teacher conferences will be conducted on
Thursday, October 18 th . Please plan to attend this conference to get to know
the teacher and learn about your child’s progress in academics, behavior, and
social areas.
If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to give us a call. If
we work in partnership and present a united front to our students, they will
understand our expectations and they WILL succeed!
Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who help in many ways throughout
each and every day. Your expertise helps us accomplish our goals.
Sincerely,
“I can learn. I will learn. If it is to be, it’s up to me. I can do it!”

October Count is here. Students attending CLPE on the
count date is the basis for funding for our school. Student
Count Day is October 1 st , so please make every effort to
have your student attend on that day. Students are included
in the count if they attend October 1st and the five days before
and/or the five days after October 1 st . We were able to hire additional
teachers this year to obtain smaller class sizes because of the additional
School of Choice students attending CLPE. Every student
counts and we want to be able to continue to have small class sizes
and additional support in every classroom. Again, thank you for entrusting
your children to our school! Our CLPE CREW rocks!
What’s happening in the art room
We’re having a great time this fall in art.
We have worked on Olympic medals for all students. Ms.
Zeikus, my student teacher and I, asked students to give themselves
a medal for something they do well. Some students
were using the IB Learner profiles for this.
Original Works art will be coming home around October 15th and will need to
be returned to Mrs. Awsumb-Conn by October 26 th . A “Look what’s coming”
sheet was sent home the week of September 17. This provides an
overview of the program.
The projects for Original Works are as follows:
The students in Kindergarten and 1 st grade made ROBOTS.
Students in 2 nd and 3 rd created a Name design
Students in 4 th and 5 th worked on Environments using textures.
If you have a special artwork that your student has made that you would rather
use for the OW program, the work must be flat, simple and 8”x10 ½” in
size (NOT a standard copy paper size). When you receive the OW packet,
you can return it with your original artwork.
Kindergarten News
What’s happening in Kindergarten
We have been very busy the last few
weeks practicing routines and learning
classroom expectations. We have
taken Pirate Pete around the building
and helped him to make good choices.
We’ve had to remind him to keep his
hands to himself, use an inside voice,
and avoid throwing sand on the playground!
We have begun practicing some letters
and sounds. We will be focusing letter
sounds /m/, /n/, /s/ and /p/ for the
month of September and add in /i/ and.
In math we are counting everything
we can find to count forwards and
backwards.
Kindergarten had some wonderful visitors
from the Poudre Fire Authority. Fire
fighters Scott, Tim, Joe and Drew from
Station 7 came in to discuss many important
issues about safety including:
Snacks
We still have a few students not brining
a snack to school. Our kindergartners
are working hard and their brains
need fuel every day. We provide a
small handful of animal crackers to
those students who forget, but our supplies
will surely dwindle quickly at this
rate. We would appreciate any snack
donations (pretzels, crackers. etc.)

How to behave safely around fire including
stop, drop and roll
What constitutes an emergency
How and when to call 911

What is an escape plan and how each
family should have a plan in place
What a fireman wears and why-Mrs.
Hall put on the heavy fire suit, the
mask, hat and oxygen tank to demonstrate
that the fire suit is for protection
and not scary
Families are encouraged to have
smoke detectors and bicycle helmets
and they are available at the fire station.
S E C O N D G R A D E –2nd GRADE
Second grade recently completed our first planner on Who
We Are-“ Knowing rights and responsibilities helps in the
acceptance of others”. We talked a lot about being good
friends, pirates, and students using the IB attributes.
Currently, we are studying Sharing the Planet-
“Organisms rely on living and non-living elements of their
habitat”. The students will learn about arthropods by
watching them in the Nature Center, on the Poudre River
Trail, on our playground, and, even, at home. We will observe
them in their natural habitats
and look for similarities and differences.
As budding entomologists, we
will go to the Butterfly Pavilion early in
November
T H I R D
G R A D E
Third grade is wrapping up their IB planner focusing on rules and
responsibility and learning how to appropriately adapt individual
behavior to be successful in different surroundings.
Wow! The students are learning a lot! Our next IB planner focuses
on geographic features - if you've traveled and would like to
come in and share pictures, knowledge, or artifacts with us we'd
love to include you as an "expert." Please let your child's teacher
know! More IB information coming at you soon!
What’s Up with Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is filled with learning, fun, and responsibility.
Here are some of our highlights.
IB in the Fifth Grade
We will be inquiring into the central ideas of balance,
conflict, movement, perspective, and choice
while learning the diverse 5 th grade standards.
Eco Week
In late September, we spend two nights and three days up in Estes Park doing
environmental studies, hiking, and team-building. The kids take courses in
Wilderness Survival, Rocky Mountain Geology, Zipline (personal challenge),
and Low Ropes (team challenges).
School Wide Recycling
A group of 5 th grade students volunteer to collect, sort, and recycle materials
from all bins in the school. Our group this year has been very conscientious
and careful about separating errant trash from the recyclables. Annually, we
save approximately 175 trees each year!
Peer Mediation
After Eco-Week, select 5 th graders will be trained to help kids solve problems
peacefully. Our peer mediators work during lunch recess to help the younger
students work out issues of sharing, cooperation, and kindness. When
they’re not solving problems, they play games with the younger kids.
Pirate Patrol
Pirate patrol provides a third opportunity for our students to be leaders of the
school. This group works before school to greet their fellow pirates with a
friendly “Good Morning” so they start their day off well. They also make
sure that all the little pirates make their way around the south side of the
building to the playground before school and after lunch.
Community Canned Food Drive
During the holidays, CLPE and CLPMS cooperate with the Laporte and Bellvue
businesses and the Laporte firefighters to provide holiday food baskets.
The Fifth Graders count, collect, sort, and box up each classroom’s cans.

Music Notes
Music has started off the year
with lots of new activities. Fourth
grade classes have been focusing
on learning the D and A chords on
guitars provided to us by the Little
Kids Rock program. Check out
www.littlekidsrock.com for more information and great student resources.
All grade levels have been working on parts of “Ensemble One”
from the World Music Drumming curriculum; visit
www.worldmusicdrumming.com to learn more about this program. First
and third grades are busy preparing for their music programs. Third
grade will perform the first program of the year on Thursday, November
8, at 6:30 p.m. in the CLPE gym. A note will be coming home soon,
but please be thinking about patriotic outfits your third grader can
wear for the program. We will also focus on geographic landforms, so if
you have any posters of the ocean, the mountains, or any other natural
landforms in the U.S., please let Mrs. Flail know!
All fourth and fifth graders should bring back the recorder they received
last year—new students have received a recorder to be kept at
school.
Finally, RiverSong choir has been working hard to prepare for their performance
at CMEA in January. We have been assigned our performance
time, Friday, January 25, 2013, at 4:40 p.m. The choir students will all
ride the bus to Colorado Springs. More logistical information will follow
in a note home as soon as it is available.
Everyone: COME EAT AT CULVER’S on Thursday, October 4, from 5-8
p.m. for our music fundraiser. It will be your first chance this year to
hear the choir perform—they’ll sing at 6:30 that night at Culver’s on
Lemay.
Thanks! You can always contact Mrs. Flail at 488-7645 or email
mflail@psdschools.org with any questions or concerns.

MEDIA CENTER NEWS
The Bookworm Club is a reading program
for all ages at CLPE that encourages students
to read! Kindergarten students can
benefit from having their parents read to
them and having time to spend with books. Pointing out
words and letters and talking about the pictures is perfect
for pre-readers.
The Bookworm Club is set up to encourage reading for
everyone. After recording 1000 minutes (about 16 hours)
of time spent in reading activities, students turn in a
completed reading record.
If your child wants to become a Bookworm Club member,
they need to complete 1000 minutes of reading and fill
out the blue Bookworm reading record. Turn in completed
reading records to the Media Center. Members
receive a ribbon, their name is announced on the Friday
Pirate News, and their name is added to the Bookworm
Club bulletin board. Additional completed reading records
earn bonus prizes from the Pirate's Treasure
Chest.
WE WILL SEND ALL NEWSLETTERS AND MANY COMMUNICATIONS BY EMAIL
AFTER SEPTEMBER. IF YOU WANT A PAPER COPY OF THE NEWSLETTER,
PLEASE SEND A NOTE TO THE OFFICE OR CALL THE OFFICE AND WE WILL BE
SURE TO SEND A PAPER COPY HOME WITH YOUR STUDENT NEXT MONTH!
