2008 Annual Report
Dear Friend,
Undoubtedly 2008 marked a milestone year for our not-for-profit organization as we
celebrated the grand opening of Nelson Hall Performing Arts Center and the Wellness
Center. These gathering spaces, designed to enhance people’s physical, social and
spiritual growth, offer valuable resources that are without measure. These gifts to the
greater Cheshire community would not have been possible without the support of the
generous donors noted in the following pages. We thank them, one and all.
As a young man I well remember my dad’s quote at the end of each year: “This has
been the best year of my life.” Each year just seemed to get better and better!
That sums up our thoughts of life at Elim Park: “This has been our best year, ever!”
Despite the economic downturn in 2008, Elim Park put in place two new, exciting
programs with the new Wellness Center and Performing Arts Center. What a joy to see
such a positive response from our residents and the greater Cheshire Community – to
both the Celebrate Life! Campaign and the new program centers. Each will enhance the
lives of residents, friends and neighbors for years to come.
The strong, steady leadership of a dedicated Board of Directors has overseen the
methodical growth of Elim Park during the past three decades. A seasoned and
professional staff directs the daily operations. We are grateful for the trust and
confidence that people put in Elim Park, and we will work hard to earn their
continued confidence in the future.
Ron Dischinger
President
New plans are a hallmark of Elim Park’s strategic positioning, and this coming year will
see even more plans for growth – meeting the needs of those we serve. However, it will
be with a careful eye of the big picture – making certain that any future plans
incorporate the current economic environment.
I have been privileged to serve with so many other dedicated professionals. Our
mission is simple: To work in a manner that will honor God in all we do.
I thank you for your continued interest in Elim Park and support of our mission. Our
best year, ever, is just beginning!
Residents enjoy the Wellness Center pool.
New Aqua Therapy a Winner
For David Oberg, Vice President of Health Services, caring for the residents and outpatients of Elim Park’s
Health Care and Rehabilitation Center is more than a profession, it’s a calling. “My family has been serving
the people of Elim Park for generations, and I’m honored to continue that tradition,” shares Dave.
Having witnessed the benefits of clinical advancements in short-term and long-term rehabilitation
resources over the years, Dave has led his dedicated team to proactively engage new technology, options
and programs. In the past year, this has included educational advancements among the Health Center
team, new therapy equipment, and investments designed for greater patient comfort, including new
beds, motorized chairs and renovated spaces.
Most notable this past year is the addition of an Aquatic Therapy Program, provided
in the 30’ x 60’ heated pool located in Elim Park’s new Wellness Center. Ideal for
orthopedic, cardiac, neurological or other complex medical conditions, aquatic
therapy provides a range of motion that improves recovery. “A recent patient that
had undergone dual knee replacements felt confident that his full range of motion
could be restored and he was more enthusiastic about his therapy and outcome,”
continues Dave.
These successful experiences have prompted Elim Park to pursue plans of partnerships
with local physician offices and other organizations to benefit the greater
Cheshire community. “We want to be the Rehabilitation Center of choice for our
community, and we are well on our way to achieving this goal,” concludes Dave.
An exercise class brings a smile to residents’ faces.
Wellness Center Meets Challenges
“Many days, I leave work with more energy than when I arrived,” smiles Barbara Womer, Wellness
Director at Elim Park. “The residents are pleased with the new Wellness Center. There is a constant buzz
of chatter and smiles on everyone’s faces.”
With a 12,000 sq. ft. layout, complete with state-of-the-art exercise equipment and
indoor aquatic therapy pool, the residents of Elim Park have every right to be
excited about this new resource. The center, open to employees, rehabilitation
patients from the community, and soon-to-be-residents on the Elim Park Place waiting
list, is a place to socialize as well as exercise.
“This is a vibrant place, and one that has a measurable impact on the health of our
community,” continues Barbara. “We look at quality of life holistically, addressing all
areas of wellness including physical, nutritional, social and spiritual health.”
Barbara Womer
Wellness Director
For some residents success is having the strength and energy to garden again, for others
it’s about enjoying more time with grandchildren. For one resident, it is about overcoming
the challenges of depression, “I now look at life in a new way, and the Wellness
Center is the perfect place to help me maintain well-being.”
Elim Park is proud of this resource and the immense benefit provided to its community. “Nearly 90% of
new residents use the Wellness Center shortly after moving in,” concludes Barbara. “Whether we look at
class participation, a positive change in blood pressure, improvements in strength, balance, flexibility and
endurance, we see people who are living a full and healthy life. The Wellness Center is a success.”
Elim Park residents join in song.
Celebrating a Spiritual Community
Whenever Pastor Glenn Havumaki, Chaplain at Elim Park, hears the vintage hymn It Is Well with My Soul,
he thinks of the spiritual life activities underway at Elim.
“Just as in this poignant hymn, I believe that lasting wellness comes from deep within and the Department
of Christian Ministries is dedicated to providing opportunities for worship and meaningful service,”
shares this pastor who has been part of the Elim Park community for nearly thirty
years. “Whether in Bible study groups hosted in private residences, or gatherings held
at Bethel Place in Nelson Hall or Christ Chapel, we address all aspects of wellness:
body, mind and spirit.”
The new Center for Worship and the Performing Arts is an inspirational space, reflective
of Elim Park’s mission “to honor God in all we do.” Constructed and dedicated
in June 2008, this bright, colorful hall provides space for more than 300 individuals
to gather in worship or in appreciation of the talents of others. “Bethel is a combination
of two Hebrew words, ‘beth’, meaning house and ‘el’, meaning God,” explains
Pastor Glenn. “In this new space, ‘God’s House’, as it is named, our residents and
their families can gather to be of service to God and of service to each other.”
Whether playing musical instruments, sharing common voices in singing a hymn, or
hosting weekly worship services, all people and all faiths are welcome. “Whether we’re celebrating our
faith in God, the gift of this new space at Bethel Place, or the gifts of new friendships, we all have much
to celebrate,” concludes Pastor Glenn. “Through acts of faith, our residents are stronger and more
vibrant in their service to each other.”
Carl Jahrstorfer, Marlene Swaby and Louise Kannel
Gifts of Sunshine
Miss Louise Kannel, a resident of the Mallard Mill independent living neighborhood
since 1987, is celebrating a century of life in 2009. While not one for the spotlight,
she has a wonderful laugh and wry sense of humor that reflects her German and
Swiss heritage.
Carl Jahrstorfer
Director of Development
She also has a keen understanding of what the beauty of nature can do to heal the
body and spirit. “From a greenhouse to green courtyard, Louise Kannel has touched
every resident at Elim Park,” shares Carl Jahrstorfer, Director of Development at Elim
Park. “In 1990, just three years after she arrived in our community, Louise gifted an
attached greenhouse to our Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. She intuitively
understood the benefits this greenhouse could offer — from occupational hand
therapy to the personal renewal that comes from seeing and smelling blooming
flowers. Her gift literally brought sunshine into many lives.”
When the completion of Nelson Hall at Bethel Place resulted in a new area between the new and existing
buildings, Louise and her financial advisor, Bill Meyerjack, supported the idea of another green space at
Elim Park. Thus, the Louise Kannel Courtyard was created.
“With paved walkways, sitting areas and seasonally blooming plants, this new courtyard provides a quiet
oasis, and also a gathering place for residents and staff alike,” concludes Carl. “Whether spending a
moment in prayer or a moment in appreciation of God’s gift of nature, I envision that Louise has
provided a lasting, growing gift, that will be enjoyed by generations at Elim Park.”
Mary Ann and Louis Forsell
This is the Place to Be
While a new resident to Elim Park may expect to be surrounded by moving boxes their first few days, they
soon find that they are surrounded by an unexpected joy — a second family. “All members of the Elim
Park team make every effort to spend time with new arrivals to our community,” shares Rob Cota, Elim
Park Place Administrator of Independent Living. “Over the course of these conversations, we inquire
about interests, and look to engage new residents in classes, events, outings, social functions or spiritual
fellowship that fulfill these personal interests.”
For some, this includes sharing talents with new friends and neighbors, as with a former Radio City
Rockette, who now teaches country line dancing to her fellow residents. For Louis and Mary Ann Forsell,
organizers of the Resident Benevolence Fund Tag Sale, it was about lending a
helping hand to those in need. “When you have so much to be grateful for, as do all
of us who have discovered Elim Park, you simply want to do what you can to help
others. This tag sale gives all of us an opportunity to be of service.”
“We offer escorted regional trips such as our recent get-away to upstate New York,”
shares Debra Francois, Activities Coordinator at Elim Park Place. “We also offer the
freedom to simply close your door and go, knowing all will be fine upon your return.”
“This is very much home,” concludes Rob, “A home with restaurant-style dining
experience; a performing arts center featuring regional and world class talent; a
beautiful wellness center; a community of new friends and a spiritual core that reflects
in everything we do. This is Elim Park, and this is where you want to be.”
