chemicals with rapidly renewable crops,
it takes much less energy to manufacture
new SmartStrand ® Contract, compared to
other carpet fibers. At the end of its long,
beautiful installation, of course, each floor
can be recycled and find new life.

The corn plant begins its
life cycle of approximately
120-150 days.

Fully matured corn is
harvested and sent for
processing.
Process
The sugar from the corn is
processed into the bio-based
end product which makes up
37% of the polymer.
Product
The polymer is extruded
into SmartStrand fiber by
Mohawk and then tufted
into carpet.
BIOBASED
Over a third of ingredients by weight are renewably sourced
from corn, replacing the petrobased materials used in all
other flooring.

and stain resistance means that SmartStrand looks newer
longer, further extending its lifecyle and reducing its
overall environmental impact.
LESS WASTE
Mohawk in partnership with DuPont, has demonstrated
SmartStrand Contract is able to be recycled back into carpet
and diverse end use products. For any new product, particularly
given SmartStrand Contract’s extended life, a time lag occurs
prior to entering the recovery stream. As the recovery supply
chain matures, broad based carpet-to-carpet recycling will
be initiated.

ENGINEERED TO PERFORM Not only did SmartStrand ®
Contract pass the GSA Test Method for stain
resistance under heavy traffic, it received an
unprecedented perfect score of 10. This rigorous
test simulates 100 cycles of wear and cleaning
before a carpet is stained and allowed to set for
24 hours before being cleaned. The bar is now
impossibly high.
