Page 2 Fairborn Intermediate School Important Information Volunteers are important to students in our school. How can you help Call today to find out what opportunities are available! The school parking lot is closed 30 minutes before and after school for student safety. Cars are not to move in the lot during that time period. Please help us stay safe. Students should be let off and picked up in the front of the building . No student should be walking in the parking lot at any time! Students should only be let out or picked up at the curb nearest the building. They should never go between cars! Students need notes from both families if they plan to go home with a friend. The notes should be given to the office. Students cannot bring carbonated beverages to school for lunch. An exploding can or bottle is a safety hazard! Help the student patrol to aid students and adults to cross the streets safely. If you are walking, please follow their directions about crossing the street. You make good role models for our students. RESPECT, RESPONSIBIL- ITY, AND SAFETY make a difference! Aztec Service Learning Project Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure, by Andrew J. Shoup was read by the fifth grade Aztec Team to the third graders at Fairborn Primary School. About ten third grade classes were read to by the Aztec Team. The third grade classes learned the 4- way Test. The 4-way Test asks four questions to help you make good decisions. During this project, we learned to improve reading fluency, more about comprehension and how to be better role models for younger students. We also learned how to make apple dumplings, how to follow recipes better and how to measure ingredients. Fifth grade volunteers learned how to sell better, how to count money and to compromise with each other. We learned how to thank people better by writing letters. The fifth grade Aztec Team felt that it was amazing to read to third graders. We were so thankful that we got to read and also teach the ten third grade classes to read better. This project was a valuable learning experience for our team. We thank the adults that allowed us to participate in this project. We enjoyed making apple dumplings, writing letters and reading, Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure. We also thank Mr. Robinson and the Fairborn Rotary Club for helping with the project. February 2008 Page 3 BITS AND PIECES OF FIS NEWS On January 22 Fairborn Intermediate School hosted the 23rd Annual Fairborn City Spelling Bee. Fifteen students from FIS, BMS, Mary Help of Christians, and Bethlehem Lutheran competed to find this year’s top spellers. FIS was represented by Sierra Prince, Nikki Brewer, Madelyn Wardle and Tori Donaldson. The girls spelled many challenging words and had many tense moments. They did an excellent job representing us. Congratulations to the 2008 winners Kylie Wallace and Cameron Elliott, both 8th grade students from BMS. Congratulations to everyone who competed this year. Thank you goes out to Mrs. Brackenhoff, Mrs. McDermott, Mr. Howard, Miss Tillotson, Mrs. Lauderback, and Mrs. Morgret. Aslo thank you to the Dorothy Ann and Oscar Niebes Family for donating the trophies, Mrs. May Rose Baine for designing the program , and Ms. Teresa boney for printing the programs. The Principals’ Reading Challenge is still going strong. Students are reading each evening and recording their minutes. The aroma of popcorn each month confirms this statement. During the month of January, fourth grade students read 175,474 minutes, 5th grade students read 120,141 minutes and Mr. Webb’s class read 1,135 minutes. Mr. Lairson’s class is leading the 4th grade with 25,002 minutes and Mrs. Bair’s 5th grade class is leading with 21,428 minutes. Keep reading!! We can make our goal of 3,000,000 minutes at the end of the school year if everyone does their part to keep reading, recording, and turning in their minutes. Mrs. Melissa Shanks and two of her students found out it pays to write excellent essays. Jacklyne Woods and Ashley Bocook participated in an essay contest sponsored by Coldwell Banker Heritage Realtors. The theme was “My Home: American Dream.” Jacklyne received $500 and Mrs Shanks, being the winner’s teacher, received a digital video camera to use in the classroom. Ashley was a runner up and received $100 plus a Certificate of Achievement. Congratulations to Jacklyne, Ashley, and Mrs. Shanks! February is Jump for the Heart Month at FIS. Mrs. Burns, her student teachers Ms Linda Morris and Mr. Stepehen Froehlich are encouraging students to be better at jumping rope. Some students have donated money to help the American Heart Association, but that is not the main purpose for the activity. The main purpose is to help students understand that to have a healthy heart a person needs to eat the right kinds of foods, eat the right amount of food, and to exercise to stay healthy. Supporting our students with woreds of confidence to help them have the confidence they can jump more and longer than they thought they could is a great way to encourage our students! Never Been Absent is a prestigious club to belong to. Students who have not missed a day of school or had 3 or fewer tardies are eligible at the end of each quarter to have ice cream to celebrate their success. At the end of this past semester, those that had not missed a day for the first half of the school year were rewarded with two free tickets to a Wright State Basketball game. The group was announced as being members of the NBA. A wonderful achievement for 56 of our students. Keep up the good attendance!!
