4 ANY OLd IRON 149 Orchard Street The first retail store of its kind to hit Manhattan, Any Old Iron specializes in selling rare and UK-specific menswear. The majority of the collections featured are exclusive to Any Old Iron and include labels like; Bolongaro Trevor, Vivienne Westwood, Horace, Unconditional, Keanan Dufty and Jeffery West. Any Old Iron is the brainchild of designer/ stylist, Andrew Clancey and arts-entrepreneur, Christopher Melton. The shop’s name is rooted in the olden cry of a scrap man collecting metal with his horse and cart, and also hearkens to Clancey’s family scrap metal business, which was founded in 1872. Pop in to say hello to Andrew and his beloved Boston Terrier, Monkey, for a truly unique shopping experience. BY ROBERT JAmES 74 Orchard Street Simple, Honest, Handsome. Robert James is a rural Ohio native whose menswear brand is founded on timeless handsome classics with a modern twist. James, who lives and designs on the Lower East Side, brings his passion for men’s fashion to life by designing a head to toe line of jackets, coats, jeans, trousers, and craft knitwear. James strives to maintain a brand that balances innovation and inspiration, while honoring the tradition of honest, hard work. Inspired by music and historic men’s garments and themes, and guided by the spirit of his humble beginnings, James’s designs appeal to high-end men’s fashion books as well as the average guy. The brand also uses local goods and manufacturing, insuring that every product is not only great for the consumer, but has a deeper environmental conscience while supporting local businesses in the community. THE CAST 71 Orchard Street The Cast is a downtown New York based men’s and women’s clothing label and shop specializing in denim, leather, vintage clothing & boots, records, and other rock ‘n’ roll necessities. The Cast started in the Lower East Side in 2004 with a small T-shirt collection, which quickly expanded into a full menswear line. By 2009, the company saw a change in partnership with the addition of Elisa Maldonado. That same year, co-founders Chuck Guarino and Elisa launched the women’s line and opened up shop at 71 Orchard Street. The Cast continues to manufacture all their denim and leather here in New York City.
EARNEST SEWN 90 Orchard Street This premium denim shop opened on Orchard Street in 2007 after a meticulous renovation of a 1902 storefront. Earnest Sewn is a denim and clothing brand that sets itself apart by consistency in concept and strong lifestyle identity. The concept lies in the idea of mixing the Japanese beauty aesthetic of Wabi- Sabi with denim’s Americana past. Those who visit Earnest Sewn will find a line made from soft layers, domestic, Japanese, Turkish and Italian fabrics that reflect an unprecedented commitment to quality and individual style, as well as an unwavering appreciation for denim, clothing and the fading mystique of American ingenuity and craftsmanship. Each piece of Earnest Sewn is handcrafted to perfection right here in the United States; the end result, a byproduct of our obsession. EpAuLET 144 Orchard Street Husband and wife team Adele Berne and Michael Kuhle established Epaulet, a classic American style clothing company with a British twist, in May 2008 in Brooklyn. The LES store opened in Fall of 2010 and stocks men’s and women’s lines of exclusive inhouse brands, as well as limited edition items created with partner brands. Focusing on a dressedup business casual aesthetic, the Epaulet line features trousers, shirting, neckwear, and dresses. Epaulet is meticulous about tailoring, offers colorful, unique and high quality fabrics and prides itself on top of the line quality products that are local, sustainable and socially responsible whenever possible. SELF EdGE 157 Orchard Street Established in San Francisco, Self Edge opened its LES location in July of 2009. The store carries the world’s finest denim and leather accessories, all with a distinct aesthetic and details that are second to none. Selvedge lines made of metallic red silk, rivets made from sterling silver, poisonous python skin tags from Okinawa—the designers have gone to great lengths to find these unique items and make them available to you. The Self Edge decree is “We don’t see a pair of jeans as just a pair of jeans. We see them as part of your life—something that ages with you and, like you, only becomes better with time.” SkuNkFuNk 181 Orchard Street Skunkfunk strongly believes fashion, environmental and social concerns can and should go hand-in-hand. The stylish digs created in northern Spain, overflow with bold versatile threads, made mostly from sustainable textiles and shipped in recycled and biodegradable packaging. Skunkfunk collaborates closely on its urban European garb with a menagerie of diverse and talented artists, musicians, and illustrators. Many of the clothing items are reversible or adaptable, such as skirts that morph into shirts and shirts that morph into dresses. Skunkfunk continues to reinvent itself through its design and personality, with an eclectic and vigorous style that is full of color and multi-concept designs.
