THE EVENT: The Golden Bulls return to Charlotte, NC for their third contest this
season and home opener against West Virginia Institute of Technology. JCSU
was dealt a tough, big loss in Durham, NC versus DI-AA N.C. Central (59-0).
This will be the first visit to McGirt Field for the Golden Bears of WV Tech. WV
Tech competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), not
sanctioned by the NCAA. The Golden Bears opened the season with a 31-9 win
over Olivet Nazarene at home, followed by a 44-10 loss to Glenville State on the
road. Senior receiver Jeremy Franklin is 101 yards shy of passing JCSU All-
Time leading receiver Marquis Belton (2003–2006, 160 catches, 2,592 yards,
14 TDs) in receiving yards. Franklin eclipsed Belton last week in most catches
with his four catch performance against NCCU. Franklin currently has 2,491
receiving yards, 163 catches, and 20 TDs.
THE SERIES: Johnson C. Smith University and West Virginia Institute of
Technology will clash on the field for just second time in history. Steven Aycock
debuted as a head coach against the Golden Bears. These two teams met for the
first time last season (Aug. 28th), for the 2009 opener. WV Tech walked away
with a 49-39 victory on their home field in Montgomery, WV.
WV TECH HEAD FOOTBALL
COACH
Coach Tinsley is entering
into his third season at
WVU Tech after rejoining
the Golden Bear staff
after departing in 1989 for
successful Collegiate (50-
38-3) and High School (51-20) coaching
stints.
Tinsley brings with him an upgraded
version of his spread offense that currently
holds numerous National and West Virginia
records. Excitement and athleticism are the
trademarks of Tinsley’s offense that is sure
to thrill Golden Bear fans and light up the
score board this season.
Tinsley’s most recent coaching stint was
at Nitro High School, where he coached
for 12 years, compiling a 51-20 record
with the Wildcats and took home a State
Championship in 1998.
The St. Albans native began his playing
career as the Quarterback for Appalachian
State in ’81 & ’82 before and injury sidelined
him as a player. From ’83-’88 Coach Tinsley
served as an Assistant Coach at Appalachian
State before returning for his 1st coaching
stint at WVU Tech as an Assistant in
’89. Tinsley then coached for 2 years as
the Head Coach at West Virginia State
University prior to accepting the Offensive
Coordinator position at Nitro High School.
Tinsley served as the Offensive Coordinator
6 years before finally accepting the Head
Coaching position which he also held for 6
years.
While at Nitro, Tinsley also served as the
Women’s Basketball team for 12 years and
softball for 7 years.

CIAA Football Weekly Preview - Week Three...
Hampton, VA – Last weekend produced mixed results for the CIAA as it enjoyed exhilarating victories as well as disappointing defeats. This weekend,
ten CIAA schools will be in action and eight of them will be meeting nonconference opponents. The lone contest featuring CIAA teams, Bowie State
– Fayetteville State, is a rematch of the 2009 Championship Game. However, several nonconference tilts will be important as the league continues to
raise its football reputation.
GAME OF THE WEEK: WINSTON-SALEM STATE AT NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL: The Rams have come out of the gate fast with an impressive
2-0 start. With victories over Virginia Union and its long-time rival, North Carolina A&T, WSSU has already earned one more win than it did in 2009
(1-10). Last weekend’s comeback win over the Aggies is one of the best wins the Rams have enjoyed in years. After last weekend’s handling of VUU,
the mettle of WSSU was put to the test. The Rams came through with flying colors. Two quarterbacks were necessary to orchestrate the win over the
Aggies. This strategy might be necessary to knock off North Carolina Central. RB Nic Cooper has also provided a consistent running threat. Defensively,
the Rams are giving up only 13.5 points per contest and will need to play solid against an NCCU team that won 59-0 last weekend. The Eagles knocked
off WSSU 18-10 last season and the Rams once again seek revenge against its one-time CIAA divisional rival (6:00 p.m. at Durham).
Players to watch: (Winston-Salem State: LB Carl Fields; DB Alton Keaton; RB Nic Cooper).
MARS HILL AT ST. AUGUSTINE’S: Last weekend’s win over Catawba marked the second time in three seasons that St. Aug won at Catawba. With
an experienced quarterback in Joaquin Green and a stout defense, the Falcons tackled perennial Division II power Catawba in Salisbury. Green threw
two touchdowns at Catawba in a rare home opener loss for the Indians. LB Steven Stanback was a tackling machine against the Indians with 14. Mars
Hill is 6-1 all-time against the Falcons including last year’s 20-14 squeaker. The Falcons will look to be the first league team since the reinstatement of
divisional play in 2000 to go 2-0 against the SAC. (4:00 p.m. at Raleigh).
Players to watch: (St. Augustine’s: QB Joaquin Green; LB Steven Stanback; WR Jone’ Harris).
BOWIE STATE AT FAYETTEVILLE STATE: The Broncos and the Bulldogs suffered disappointing losses against local rivals. However, the losses were
of a different variety. BSU’s defense held MEAC rival Morgan State out of the end zone in a tight 14-7 road loss. However, special teams mistakes
(which doomed BSU against Seton Hill) kept Morgan State in the game. A Morgan State safety was due to a center snap sailing over the head of the
punter in the second quarter. All other scores by MSU were via four field goals. However, BSU has had a tough time generating offense. With QB Tyrae
Reid and WR Clifton Budd returning among other returning starters for BSU, the Bulldogs must be disappointed with their offensive output thus far. The
Broncos suffered a tough 39-0 loss to rival UNC-Pembroke on Saturday. FSU seemed overmatched against the Braves, giving up 450 total yards. The
Broncos could only gain 81 yards offensively. Both teams will need to generate much more offensive production to return to the Championship Game
and win their respective divisions in 2010. This game will not count in the conference standings. (6:00 p.m. at Fayetteville, NC).
Players to watch: (Bowie State: LB Delano Johnson; QB Tyrae Reid; WR Clifton Budd).
(Fayetteville State: RB Richard Medlin; K Austin Turner; DB Aaron Peterson).
SHAW AT ELON: Shaw started its 2010 season on a high-flying start, scoring 57 points against the Panthers. RB Raymond Williams and QB Kevin
Atkins accounted for five touchdowns against VUU. However, the Bears will face a difficult test travelling to Elon College, NC to face the Phoenix. Elon
is ranked #8 in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Phoenix also played Duke last weekend and dropped a tough 41-27 defeat. (7:00 p.m. at
Elon College, NC).
Players to watch: (Shaw: RB Raymond Williams; QB Kevin Atkins; LB Fred Sparkman).
WEST VIRGINIA STATE AT VIRGINIA STATE: The Trojans started off well against Livingstone on August 28. After a bye week, the Trojans hope to
continue their strong momentum against WVIAC foe West Virginia State. WVSU is 0-1. VSU received inspiring play from QB Jared Battle. He accounted
for three TDs (2 rush, 1 pass) against the Blue Bears. Antwain Lyde and Kenay Hawkins also provided support with the running attack. VSU would like
to enter their game against in-state rival Norfolk State (Sept. 18) with a sparkling 2-0 record. (1:30 p.m. at Ettrick, VA).
Players to watch: (Virginia State: QB Jared Battle; WR Corey Young; K Justin Parker).
UNC-PEMBROKE AT ST. PAUL’S: The Braves are riding high after handling Fayetteville State, 39-0. They look to get their second straight win against
the CIAA on Saturday. St. Paul’s lost its opener 35-28 to West Virginia Wesleyan.
Players to watch: (St. Paul’s: QB Steffen Miller-Cohen, WR Jason Davis, DB Dominic Tolson).
CATAWBA AT LIVINGSTONE: Livingstone has suffered two tough losses to open 2010. On opening weekend, the Blue Bears fell to VSU, 30-6. Last
weekend, Livingstone lost to Newberry, 55-0. LC mustered just eight yards of total offense against Newberry. Catawba is 11-0 against Livingstone and
has won all ten times they have played for the Mayor’s Cup. Both Livingstone and Catawba are located in Salisbury. (6:00 p.m. at Salisbury, NC).
Players to watch: (Livingstone: LB Bryan Aycoth; QB Curtis Edens; LB Shawntez Jones).
LINCOLN (PA) AT NEW HAVEN: Lincoln launched its first season in the CIAA off with a win over in-town rival Cheyney. QB Laquan Williams passed
for 129 yards and rushed for another 97. It was the second shutout in two years for the Lions against Cheyney, 12-0. This weekend, the Lions travel to
New Haven to play in the Harmony Classic. (1:00 p.m. at New Haven, CT).
Players to watch: (Lincoln: QB Laquan Williams; WR Matthew Colston; DB Jairon Bailey).

GOLDEN BULLS HELD SCORELESS 59-0 AGAINST N.C. CENTRAL ON A SHORT
WEEK
September 2, 2010 (Week 2)
Last Week’s Action for JCSU...
Durham, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University football team faced a sizable
59-0 defeat to Division I-AA North Carolina Central University in a rare Thursday
evening contest inside O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. JCSU falls to 0-2 overall, while
the Eagles open their 2010 season with a victory (1-0).
The Golden Bulls won the coin toss and chose to defer until the second half.
N.C. Central drove 95 yards in 13 plays for their first touchdown, scored on a four
yard pass from Keon Williams to Justin Manning. Redshirt freshman punter Tyler
Rabb (Shelby, NC) had his initial punt blocked and it traveled to the NCCU 45.
After driving down into the red zone, the Eagles punched it in with a three yard
run by Tim Shankle. Senior defensive lineman Nicholas Banks (Denmark, SC)
broke through the line to block the extra point, resulting in a 13-0 deficit. By the
end of the first half, the Golden Bulls trailed 26-0 with only two yards rushing on
six attempts.
JCSU lost two fumbles in the first half and had a 9:56 time of possession compared
to 20:04 for NCCU. Eight penalties totaling in a loss of 66 yards was also a
setback by halftime. Senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) amassed
most of the offense with 164 yards passing, completing 13-of-28 attempts.
N.C. Central maintained control throughout the contest, scoring 16 in the third
and 17 in the fourth. The last two NCCU scores came off turnovers. James
Reese recovered a fumble off a bad snap to the punter and returned
it nine yards for a TD. Junior quarterback Robert Johnson (Winston-
Salem, NC) entered the game in the final minutes. Unfortunately,
Johnson had a passed intercepted across the middle and returned 83
yards for a touchdown by Roger Stewart.
Johnson C. Smith totaled 233 yards of offense (187 passing, 46 rushing),
while N.C. Central had 298 yards of total offense. But five turnovers (3
fumbles lost, 2 interceptions) were too much for the Golden Bulls to
overcome and be competitive. J.C. Smith finished the night 3-of-11 on
third down conversions and 0-of-3 on fourth down.
Senior receiver Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) concluded the
game with four catches and 77 yards, all earned in the first half. Senior
defensive back Girard Miller (Winston-Salem, NC) tallied nine tackles,
while senior linebacker Mike Morgan (Sumter, SC) had five tackles
including a sack for a loss of seven.
JCSU
Ryan Carter completed 14-of-34 pass attempts for 173 yards;
four of those completions went to Jeremy Franklin (#80) for
77 yards in the loss to NCCU
GOLDEN BULLS LOSE SHOOTOUT 49-39 TO WV TECH IN SEASON OPENER
August 29, 2009 (Week 1)
Last Time these Teams met...
Montgomery, WV - The Johnson C. Smith University football team fell
to West Virginia Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon 49-39
on a wet Martin Field. The Golden Bears, who compete in the NAIA
Mid-South Conference, improve to 1-0 in their season debut; while
JCSU starts off 0-1.
Both teams got right to work in the first half. WV Tech struck first on
their opening drive. Michael Scott completed a 27-yard touchdown
pass to Rashard Gould for the game’s initial points. The point after
attempt gave the Golden Bears a 7-0 lead and capped off a five play,
73-yard drive that lasted just 38 seconds.
JCSU wasted no time responding. After a 34-yard kick return by senior
receiver Kenny Strickland, the Golden Bulls only needed one play to
score. Freshman tailback Dedrick Anderson sprinted 50 yards up the
right side into the end zone. Junior place kicker Julius Wright tied the
game with the PAT.
The Golden Bears went three and out on their next two offensive series.
JCSU put together a 10 play, 55-yard drive with their next possession
that resulted in a 24-yard field goal. The score gave J.C. Smith a 10-7
lead with 2:11 remaining in the first quarter.
WV Tech really struggled on their next drive. Freshman defensive end
Travis Williams sacked the quarterback for a loss of four on first down,
followed by an incomplete pass, and then an interception by junior
safety Lawyer Montgomery on third down. The first quarter came to
a close with the Golden Bulls ahead 10-7. However, the Golden Bears recaptured the lead and went up 20-10 halfway through the
second quarter.
Scott scrambled for a seven yard touchdown to complete an 11-play, 70-yard drive. On their next possession, Scott connected with
JuJuan Smith for a 46-yard touchdown pass. Junior quarterback Ryan Carter helped the Golden Bulls bounced back with a three
yard touchdown run to narrow WV Tech’s advantage 20-17. Scott retaliated in nine plays for WV Tech with a touchdown strike to Gary
Joshway to take a 27-17 lead.
The score would remain the same heading into the locker room at halftime. JCSU got back on top with two touchdowns in the third.
Anderson broke another 50+ yard run (52) to set Carter up for a nine yard touchdown dash with 13:48 remaining. The Golden Bulls
second TD of the quarter came when Carter found sophomore receiver Rico Poole in the left corner of the end zone to take a 31-27
lead with four minutes left in the third.
Just before the third period drew to a close and with a steady rainfall, Carter fumbled on a scramble. WV Tech linebacker John Hellsoe
recovered the ball and took it in for a touchdown to regain the lead. The Golden Bears converted on a two-point conversion to go ahead
35-31.
JCSU started the fourth quarter with the ball. However, the offense sputtered and turned the ball over on downs. Scott and Smith
connected twice for 59 yards, a touchdown, and a 42-31 advantage over JCSU. Both schools scored an additional touchdown to
account for the 49-39 final.
This was definitely an offensive explosion by both schools. The Golden Bulls produced 479 yards of total offense (337 rushing, 142
passing). Anderson rushed for a game-high 167 yards on 20 carries with one touchdown. Carter scored three touchdowns (one
passing, two rushing), threw for 100 yards and rushed for 90. Poole was the leading receiver for the Golden Bulls with five catches for
43 yards and two TDs.
Montgomery was everywhere on the field defensively for JCSU. He had a team-high 11 tackles, two interceptions, and one forced
fumble. Unfortunately, the defense allowed 447 total yards and WV Tech’s Michael Scott passed for 357 yards and five touchdowns.
