Professional Objectives
Administrative: Lead academic units in Higher Education and contribute to the development of a core
curriculum that is truly integrated and rooted in the concept of a “humanist education”. Develop university
curricula that answer to the need for a greater trans-disciplinary expertise and that are based on authentic
inquiry (hands-on & mind-on approaches) and the contextualization of research results.
Research: Biogeochemical cycling of organic matter in soils and aquatic environments. Impact of
watershed disturbance on cycling of trace metals and organic matter. Tracers of combustion by-products
in environmental media. Management of analytical/environmental laboratories (organics/metals).
Development and direction of cross-disciplinary curricula within the context of university core science
courses and environmental studies programs.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
I have been teaching at the university level since 1992 and the courses I have developed can be grouped
into the three following thematic “threads”: Courses that address the needs of the university core
curriculum for general science classes and which are integrated into a “liberal arts” degree structure;
courses that are specifically designed as upper level electives for technical careers in science and
technology (biotechnology, environmental science, medicinal chemistry) and can be used towards minors
in chemistry or as pre-med electives; courses that integrate science analysis into non-research
professional majors (pre- and in-service teacher certification, environmental and natural resource
management, public policy). To achieve appropriate learning outcomes towards the understanding of
large-scale and dynamical environmental cycles, I use two approaches: 1) authentic inquiry that relies
on the use of laboratory setting and/or information technology to provide the learner with the opportunity
to manipulate complex data sets, test and develop conceptual models based on available information,
and be exposed to ill-constrained and complex problems, and 2) the contextualization of scientific
information that provides a structure by which learners can integrate the understanding of complex
natural systems into problem solving approaches.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
I am currently funded collaboratively, and have been for the past several years, through a diversity of
National to State level programs. Some of these applied research efforts provide environmental agencies
with the needed scientific information to develop effective policies to manage water and air quality at the
regional scale. Other projects are more fundamental in their scope and funded by Federal scientific
agencies (NSF, NOAA, NASA, USGS). All of these projects have supported a number of graduate
students and their training in environmental research degrees.
• Attracted $1.3M in funding to my group out of a total of $3.2M in collaborative grants (2007-2014).
• 25 Grants since 1997 (see complete list of funded projects below).
• Since joining Texas A&M University – Galveston, I have contributed to ~$900,000 from internal and
external funding sources to renew and expand instrument “park” in support of the environmental
geochemistry research (2 GC/MSMS, Hg analyzer, CHN analyzer, ASE extractor, LA-ICPMS).
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
recommend funding of international projects (10-15/year) in humanities, social sciences,
and natural sciences collaboratively undertaken by French and American institutions
(supported by the Institute for International Education and the Mellon Foundation)..
2005 Invited Professor (Sabbatical), École de Sciences Politiques (Sciences Po)/American
