GROUND COMMUNICATIONS OUTLETS (GCOs)
WITH MACON AFSS
GCOs are remotely controlled ground-to-ground communications
facilities utilizing a VHF radio and a telephone line. Pilots at
nontowered airports may use a GCO to contact FSS and Clearance
Delivery to obtain an updated weather briefing prior to takeoff, an
instrument clearance, or to close a VFR or IFR flight plan. Pilots
should key their radio microphone four times at one second intervals
for clearance delivery and six times at one second intervals for
Macon AFSS. This will initiate a telephone call to the facility chosen.
Once a controller answers the telephone, proceed with a push-totalk
and release-to-listen conversation. Inform the controller you are
talking from a GCO. GCOs are used only on the ground.
