FROM THE PRESIDENT
Have you ever gotten out of the house — well on your way to work — and discovered that
you forgot your watch I have… and it’s annoying. All day long I look at my blank wrist,
trying to calculate the amount of time I have left to get to a meeting, prepare for an appointment
or meet a deadline. Sometimes it seems as though calendars and clocks rule our lives and
cause us stress. On the other hand, I remember the smile that came to my face at the end of
May when I glanced at my calendar and realized it was alerting me that summer vacation was
about to begin. Sweet!
Although our summer schedule at the school was paced differently, progress was still made.
Teachers participated in ongoing education and staff members prepared for another school year
in their own ways. Improvements and maintenance issues were addressed in the school facilities, handbooks were revised
and the school calendar received its final touches to signal new and exciting things for the 2009 — 2010 school year.
It is absolutely amazing to think of the many talented and generous people who are part of the IWA family — students,
faculty, staff, board members, parent volunteers, alumnae, benefactors, and all the friends of the Academy who
always seem to be there supporting our fundraising events, such as the golf tournament and gala. It really does take all of us
working together to make the Academy a success. Personally, I love looking at The Word magazine. It gives me the opportunity
to look back in gratitude, remember all the good people associated with IWA and recall the many events that took
place during the last semester. It was particularly exciting to see the picture of the proud and happy seniors throwing their
graduation caps in the air, knowing we have helped them to fulfill their hopes and dreams for very bright futures.
After a relaxed summer, we are all back focusing on our timepieces and calendars. I offer a special welcome to our new
families and I hope you have already experienced the welcoming IWA spirit. Please take the time to get involved. It’s not
only wonderful for the school and your daughter(s), but you will meet some fantastic people as well.
Look to page 9 for an introduction to our new faculty and staff members, along with the Executive Committee of the Incarnate
Word Academy Board of Advisors. These men and women work tirelessly on behalf of the school. Most of them do
not even have a daughter attending IWA. They simply believe in our mission and serve generously — always with a smile. I
am so grateful for their service.
May God bless you in this new school year. No matter the ticking clocks or looming deadlines, there is always enough
time for me to be grateful for each of you.
Praised be the Incarnate Word,
CAMPUS MINISTRY
DEENA WOLF
Campus Minister
It’s hard to believe that my first year at IWA has ended and I’m embarking on a new one! I
am truly blessed to be part of the IWA family and experience the wonderful things that are
happening here; including the opportunity to witness our students demonstrate their faith
through service. Our service program is entitled “Be Compassionate and Serve One Another.”
This motto comes directly from the goals of Incarnate Word Academy, which states that part
of our mission is, “…to spread the love of the Incarnate Word and His gospel… foster personal
growth, strong Christian values and service to others… compassion for others in God’s family.”
The young women at IWA give so much of themselves in order to help spread the Gospel message.
I have the privilege of working with the students regarding the places and people they serve
and have seen firsthand the smiles of joy when they share their experiences with me. Their
service goes far beyond only fulfilling the requirement for graduation. I firmly believe that our students understand Christ’s
message to serve one another and therefore give of their time and talent in many places, such as hospitals, shelters, food
banks, churches and schools. Many of our students also serve others throughout the world, including China, Mexico,
Ireland, Costa Rica, Israel, Jordan, Canada and China. Unfortunately, space does not permit me to share every service
experience; however, I would like to share a few reflections from some of the girls.
We are so proud of our students who model the values they are taught at IWA. They are witnesses to God’s love and are
“
truly Women of the Word.
“All over China there are little children with nothing. I was able to see firsthand how the quality of life is so
different from the United States and how love and care can change the future for people.”
–Heidi Schruben, service at an orphanage in China
“I believe that I have followed in the footsteps of the Lord, because He
said that when you feed the poor, clothe the hungry, visit the sick, you
do all those things to Him.”
– Elizabeth Bole, service at her parish church
“I learned about myself and I grew in my trust in God. I had to
push myself everyday to give more of myself to others, in love.
It taught me that through the grace of God, anything is possible
and He will not ask us to do something we cannot handle.”
– Jamie Roy, service in Mexico
“My service is following in the footsteps of Jesus by helping serve Him, because He is
in every person… the needy, thirsty and hungry.”
– Joi Moseley, service in Israel and Jordan
“Jesus told us that if we wanted to be in the Kingdom of God, we had to start here
on Earth by helping others who are less fortunate than us. These experiences taught
me that we, as ordinary people, can bring the Kingdom of God here to earth.”
– Genesis Calderon, service at a women’s and children’s shelter
“We are all striving toward the same goal: Eternal happiness with God.”
– Christi Fote, service at her parish church
ACADEMICS
Fieldtrip to NASA
On April 20, 2009, the physics students visited NASA for the day.
The day started with a one-hour panel discussion with six NASA
women, including a flight surgeon, systems instructor, deputy
director, bone scientist, deputy division chief, and manager. Each
discussed their academic history, what led them to NASA and their
job responsibilities. Later the girls toured the Saturn V rocket and
the Johnson Space Center.
TAPPS 2009
Every year IWA prepares for the TAPPS District and State
Competitions. Along with schools such as St. Agnes Academy,
Duchesne, St. Pius X, St. Thomas, Christian and Beaumont
Kelly, our girls compete in categories that cover every
discipline — academic and artistic — and always make us
proud in their effort and placing. Those who placed moved
on to the State competition, held at Concordia University in
Austin. In 2009, IWA girls placed in several categories and
had a team of over 18 students eligible to go on to the State
competition. At State we won ribbons and medals from First
place to Sixth place and numerous Honorable Mentions. The
IWA ladies also competed in the Music TAPPS held at a different
time and location, and placed at both the District and
State meets.
« Fieldtrip to the
Federal Reserve
Last spring, a group of seniors from the Math Models and Economics
classes took a tour of the Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Houston. The
students were told about the history and role of the Federal Reserve and
toured the board room, security facilities and money vaults. The Houston
branch of the Federal Reserve Bank is unique, given its post-9/11 architectural
accommodations. At the end of the tour, each student was able to
take home some of the bills that are destroyed daily as the bank replaces
America’s money supply.
Opens Doors
«
“Oh, the Places You’ll Go” was the theme for IWA’s annual
Career Day. Over 30 speakers came to share their experiences,
expertise and time with IWA students. The girls
spent the morning visiting with individual speakers from
diverse fields during four sessions. The girls learned about
the education requirements for these varying careers, in
addition to the job’s daily routine, opportunities available,
pay scales and much more. Presentations on preparing
for college, college campus resources and tips on crafting
a resume were also available. IWA alumna Carole Hanna
McCann ’64 was the keynote speaker and delighted the
audience with her enthusiasm and stories about her theater
arts work in Houston and abroad in Iraq.
On Jan. 30, 2009, Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza, D.D., celebrated Mass
in observance of Catholic Schools Week, highlighting faith, tradition
and the doctrines Catholic education instills in its students. The Mass at
Annunciation Catholic Church demonstrated how our students are being
nurtured as leaders in our Church and in their own lives. The Mass
culminated a week-long, Catholic Schools Week 2009, observed nationally
and throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
Falcons Fly into the Pool
Falcon swimming had a great inaugural
season. The squad hit the regional meet
on Jan. 24 and swam away with 6th
place in Division I South. The 200 Medley
Relay team took 4th in the division,
earning them a trip to the State meet on
Feb. 6 and 7 in San Antonio.
Every team member at the meet
showed marked improvement over
their times from the previous week’s
HAPP invitational. Some swimmers
shaved as much as 6 seconds.
With one of the smallest teams in
our division, the Lady Falcons managed
to turn heads and gain the attention of
many of the established teams in our
division. As Coach Bryant reminds the
girls, every time they get in the pool,
they are creating the foundation for IWA State swimmers include:
swimming. The team has established
a set of school records that will inspire
future swimmers to do their very best!
ATHLETICS
Maggie Walker ᾿11
Record-Breaking Falcons
Maggie Walker ᾿11 was the 2009 school record holder in the
100-meters at 12.64 seconds. This record makes her 7th in the
state! Maggie is also part of the 4X100m and 4X400m Texas relay
team. Natilie Lerma ᾿11 was just as successful coming in 3rd in
the 800m and 4th in the 400m at the District meet. Natilie was
4th in the 800m in State and also one-fourth of the Texas relay
team. Mykalia Dudley ᾿10 was a 2009 400m and 800m District
runner-up, as well as an 800m State runner-up. Mykaila is ranked
4th in the state for the 400m dash. She’s also a member of the
4X100 and 4X400 Texas relay team. Bethany Hamilton ᾿09 did a
fantastic job coming in 3rd in the mile and 2-mile at the District
meet; she was also awarded IWA Athlete of the Year. The Falcons
worked together to break five records in the 2009 season! We
look forward to watching the 2010 team grow stronger as they
prepare for regional and state competitions in San Antonio and
Waco this coming season.
FINE ARTS
Spring Show Features Spirit and Song
IWA and St. Thomas students perform Godspell
Last spring, Incarnate Word Academy’s Drama department
produced the first (we hope!) of many musicals. Godspell,
written by John Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen
Schwartz, is based on the Gospels, but set in modern times.
Tebelak’s motivation in writing this play was to share his vision
of Christ, the Incarnate Word: a God Who loves us so much,
He is willing to come down and meet us where we are.
The drama and choir students of IWA and St. Thomas High School came together to make this vision a reality. Under the
direction of Rebecca Gautreau — Drama, Speech and Theology teacher — the students each took part in the retelling of the
Gospel parables and stories. While not all of the students knew they could sing and dance when they auditioned, they soon
discovered their hidden talents. In the end, all of the students bonded through the process of singing, dancing and laughing
their way through the retelling of the life of Christ.
IWA Art
Among the many projects art teacher, Josie Postel, keeps her students
busy with, one of the most anticipated is the crafting of lifesized
papier-mâché skeletons in celebration of Dia de los Muertos.
Art students are broken into teams of three or four. Together they
select a person or group who, during their time on earth, helped
change the world for the better. Once completed, the skeletons
(which must be able to either stand or sit without assistance) are
then displayed throughout the school, typically a week before All
Saints Day until a week after. Previous skeletal honorees include:
Judy Garland, Gandhi, Elvis Presley, Mother Teresa, Ray Charles,
Joan of Arc, and the 9/11 firefighters.
WORD IN THE WORLD
Jeanne de Matel Award
Last spring, the Teens for Unity Club was awarded the Jeanne de Matel
Award. Jeanne de Matel is the foundress of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word
and Blessed Sacrament. In her memory, an annual award is presented by the
Incarnate Word Academy Board of Advisors to reward excellence, dedication
and creativity among students, faculty and staff. Through out the 2008–2009
school year, the Teens for Unity Club performed community service to benefit
the needy and raise scholarship money for students in less fortunate countries.
The club organized a "penny war" to raise money for families affected by Hurrican
Ike. They also traveled to Galveston to paint and clean and worked at a
food bank to sort and prepare food boxes. Additionally, the girls volunteered at
womens’ shelters, nursing homes, hospitals and youth halls.
Sister Jean Marie Goukas, C.V.I. ᾿48, Sister
Congratulations to the six Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament who joyfully
celebrated 50 and 60 years of profession of vows and dedicated service to the church. Family
and friends joined them on July 25 at Annunciation Church for Mass, followed by a luncheon at
the school. Jubilarian, Sister Beatrice Maroul, C.V.I. is currently the IWA secretary.
English Teacher Alexandra El-Lahham attended the Rice University Advanced Placement
Summer Institute for AP English Literature and Composition.
The Save Darfur Club, led by Ellie Meyer ᾿10 and Bria Temple ᾿11, hosted a prayer
service on Saturday, June 27 at Hermann Park. The service was attended by several families,
an African Deacon and passersby at the park.
Jacqueline Hohenstein ᾿10 was awarded the Presidential Classroom Scholarship,
allowing her to join students from all over the world in Washington, D.C., where they
discussed “hot topics,” visited Capitol Hill and spoke with government officials.
Heidi Schruben ᾿12 traveled to the Dominican Republic and volunteered in an orphanage
where she helped teach children English.
Roots & Wings Capital Campaign
2005-2008
Teens for Unity
The Congregation of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament
and Incarnate Word Academy congratulate and thank all the
generous alumnae, faculty, Foundations, friends, parents, Sisters,
staff and students for their support of the Roots & Wings Capital
Campaign, which raised an impressive $11,100,000, exceeding
the campaign goal of $8,500,000! We will enjoy the result of their
generosity for many years to come — our beautiful Fine Arts
Center and renovated facilities.
We are grateful to the many alumnae, board of advisors, parents,
STUDENT PROFILE
Spreading Goodwill
Inspired by her own adoption, IWA student helps those in need — overseas and in the local community
Life for Heidi Schruben ᾿12 began at an orphanage in
China after she was abandoned as an infant at a bus
stop. She was adopted by her parents, Dean and Mary Schruben,
as a child and has grown up, she said, “never feeling I
was any different from my siblings.” Since she was 10 years
old, she has lived with the conviction that she should help
other people. Now she is bringing that conviction to life by
volunteering to help others in need.
On the weekends, she can be found volunteering at St.
Dominic Village, a retirement community, and at The River
Performing Arts and Visual Center, an activities center for
disabled children.
“When I was younger, I knew I wanted to be a doctor,”
she said. “Around 10, I realized I wanted to do more; to
help others.”
Most notably, Heidi put her passion to practice this past
summer by returning to her roots. For 12 days in the summer
of 2008, she volunteered at HOPE Foster Home, an
orphanage in China, where she helped in the preschool and
with scrapbooking.
“She is a sweet girl and was very involved with the
children,” said Dr. Joyce Hill, the director of the program.
“Heidi spent most of her time interacting with them... I was
very impressed with Heidi’s sweet spirit.”
Recently, a HOPE orphan Heidi sponsored was adopted,
but she continues to receive a monthly newsletter updating
her on the other childrens’ progress.
And though she encourages other students to serve in
other countries like she has, she says that it is just as important
to volunteer at home and organizations in the community,
like St. Dominic Village.
While at St. Dominic Village, Heidi notes that oftentimes
the elderly just want someone to sit with them because
they’re lonely or afraid. “Just having someone near makes
them feel more secure,” she said. “It’s just very nice to be
able to feel like you’re a help.”
All picures: Heidi Schruben ᾿12 plays with and tends to
children at the HOPE Foster Home in Beijing, China.
PROFILES
The Gift of an Education
o individual can solve all problems,” says Tom
“NMacrini. “We realized that early on and decided we
could still help some people and give them a good chance at
a better life.”
For the past 10 years, Tom and Nancy Macrini, through
their Macrini Foundation, have worked hard to provide a
quality Catholic education to those whom it would often
not be accessible. Working together with many Catholic
primary schools throughout Houston, most of which are
considered inner city, the Macrinis offer scholarships to
students who meet not only the financial need requirement,
but who also maintain the academic and behavioral standards
of the school.
After seven years, and after hundreds of “Macrini
Scholars” had graduated from eight grade, the Macrinis
discovered a hitch in the system. After primary school, “our
students [Macrini Scholars] were doing quite well on the
entrance exams to Catholic high schools, but they weren’t
able to afford them,” says Mr. Macrini. After hearing a
story about one particular student who had been a Macrini
Scholar from first grade until eighth grade, and whose family
could not afford to enroll her in a Catholic high school,
the Macrinis decided to do something about it.
“There is a significant demand from inner city students and
their families to go to a Catholic high school,” says Mr. Macrini,
“but the problem is money.” To combat this dilemma, Tom and
Nancy, with the help of the Archdiocesan Development Office,
found several Catholic high schools to work with: Incarnate
Word Academy, St. Thomas and St. Pius X (they’re now
working with Cristo Rey as well). The Macrinis now provide
financial aid to students from first to 12th grade.
When Sister Lauren Beck, C.V.I. was asked about the
Macrinis, she said, “On my first meeting with Tom and
Nancy, I was awestruck by their commitment to Catholic
education and drive to accomplish an incredibly generous
goal. With God’s help and their determination, they have
succeeded. We are all so grateful.”
“We think this is so important to help
stop the poverty cycle... To keep kids in
school, keep families together and, hopefully,
keep them involved with a church.”
Tom and Nancy Macrini at their home.
Right now there are approximately 30 Macrini-funded
students in the Catholic high school system and about 550
in Catholic primary schools. However generous the Macrinis
are, they still believe that no student should get a free
ride. “It’s a partnership,” says Mr. Macrini. “We believe it
should be a joint effort between the school, the parents and
the students, and we are there to offer financial assistance
so that the child’s dream of continuing a Catholic education
can be realized. We want to be facilitators of dreams.”
In 2008—2009, the Macrinis were funding 45 graduating
eighth-graders, and only about 25% of them were continuing
on to Catholic high school. The research the Macrinis
had done proved what they had already believed: children
who attended a Catholic high school were not only more
likely to graduate, but also more likely to go on to college.
“We think this is so important to help the poverty
cycle,” says Mrs. Macrini. “To keep kids in school, keep
families together and, hopefully, keep them involved with
a church.” Many Macrini Scholars are the first in their
families to graduate high school and move on to higher
education, and Tom and Nancy hope that they’ll not only
be successful, but also will come back to their communities
and help others in need.
“Every now and then we’ll get a note from a former
Macrini Scholar letting us know where they've landed,” says
Tom. “That’s the kind of thing that really makes our day.”
IWA salutes Tom and Nancy Macrini for their vision and
generosity, making a Catholic education a reality for so many.
2009 STYLE SHOW & LUNCHEON
Everything’s Coming Up Roses!
On Feb. 28, 2009, IWA hosted its seventh annual
Style Show & Luncheon. With the theme “Everything’s
Coming Up Roses,” (submitted by Bianca
Leggio ’09) the girls modeled casual clothing with
their mothers and donned more formal attire while
with their fathers or special friend on the runway.
We give special thanks to Christine Haas of
KHOU/Channel 11, who did a fabulous job as
emcee for the event. Thanks also to the following
boutiques for the privilege of wearing their
designs: The French Cuff Boutique, Jessica Mc-
Clintock, Posh and The Hemline. Hair and makeup
were compliments of The Jacques Dessange Salon
and Spa and the Phoenix Group provided the
runway stage and draping. The delicious meal was
catered by The French Corner and table settings
were provided by several IWA families and friends,
including: The Tobola, Sass, Sears, Watson, Leggio,
Roy, Camarillo, Garza, Lay, Walls, Gonzalez and
The third annual Appreciation Garden Party was held on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the
historic Hidden Oaks Bed and Breakfast. Approximately 100 guests, including Scholarship
Recipients and their parents, attended the event. Accompanied by a talented
violinist, a delicious afternoon tea consisting of finger sandwiches, scones and fruit
compote was served, resulting in a wonderful afternoon of food, fun and fellowship.
This annual event expresses appreciation to all those Alumnae who faithfully support
the Alumnae Association with their dues and donations. Without this support, we
would not be able to award scholarships each year to students of the Academy.
The Alumnae Association hosted
a Mardi Gras-themed happy
hour on Fat Tuesday at Champps
in Uptown Park. The attendees
ranged in class years from the
1950s to 2000s. The happy hour
included delicious appetizers
and even Mardi Gras beads for
each attendee. Mardi Gras was a
perfect theme to host an
evening of fun and reminiscing for
alumnae. Many had the chance
to catch-up with their classmates
while meeting new alumna from
other class years. The Association
hosts several happy hours
throughout the year, so be sure
The Annual Lenten Retreat was held on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at Holy
Name Retreat Center. Of the Alumnae in attendance, all agreed this was a
wonderful opportunity to spend some time away in spiritual reflection and
prayer. Of course, it would not be a gathering of IWA “girls” without some
time to socialize and catch up with the happenings in each other’s lives.
This event is held each year on the Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday.
Please mark your calendar and plan to attend next year.
The Alumnae Association
collects dues every year beginning
in July. These dues allow
the Association to support
many activities for alumnae,
the Incarnate Word Sisters
and the students of IWA. Annual
dues are $20, and are an
Alumnae Class Captains
Alumnae Class Captains serve as representatives for specific classifications, focusing on the collection of information regarding
change of address, e-mail or phone numbers — all vital information used to keep IWA’s records up to date. We ask each alumna with
any changes in personal contact information regarding you or a classmate to get in touch with your Class Captain! As you can see, we
have many classes without a Captain. Please contact Cynthia Bartholomew at 713.227.3637, ext. 128 if you wish to volunteer!
What do you love about your job I am an educator to the
core. My passion is to wake people up to be the best they
can be, wake them up to events around them both political
and personal, and help them learn to experience the joy of
personal growth and risk taking.
How did attending IWA help you on your career path By
the time I left high school, I was mentally and emotionally
prepared for college. Now all of my education, career and
life experiences are used every day in the community. Having
ideas and solutions, an opinion and a voice, allows one
to leave a footprint on this Earth.
What was IWA’s biggest impact on your life Our weekly
schedule allowed for quiet time in church — a time of
reflection and discovery. Most teenagers today do not give
themselves this time. IWA allowed me to find my voice,
develop opinions, and know and find my moral compass.
If you could say something to your teachers at IWA, what
would it be The quality and dedication of the nuns to
teaching must have become a subliminal model for me as a
classroom teacher. The nuns loved their job, they loved to
teach and they loved us as their
students. I love and remember
each and every one. The foundation
of my life was built out
of marble during my time at
IWA. This is the reason I give
and do what I can in thanks
for what my education at IWA
has given me. I am helping the
IWA Legacy continue for years
to come by including a gift in
my will that will benefit the
Academy.
Dublin, TX 19 Cents Gas
What do you love about your job I love to help my clients
plan for their futures. The most rewarding part of my job is
having clients appreciate the help and guidance I can provide.
How did attending IWA help you along your path
Attending IWA prepared me for college and even law
school. The English department prepared me very well for
the college and graduate level writing and research that
accompanies college and graduate school writing courses.
Sister Mark Edward’s Latin classes were also very helpful,
especially for law school. I’d like to take a refresher course
though — I’ve forgotten how to conjugate those verbs!
What was IWA’s impact on your life IWA was the perfect
high school for me. I came as a very shy and reserved young
lady and through the IWA Corps and the great small-sized
classes and individual teaching, I feel I was more than prepared
to succeed in college and in life.
What is your fondest memory of IWA My fondest memory
of IWA is attending the Latin competitions. I remember
attending one competition in Amarillo — the long bus ride
where we watched movies, studied our flash cards and even
saw tumbleweed!
If you could say something to your teachers at IWA, what
would it be I didn’t realize then how much care they all put
into our education and well being. All of my teachers were
fantastic at their jobs and each, in their own way, helped me
gain the confidence I needed to succeed in life.
“
I hope the (Sisters) continue to
inspire young minds and guide
them as well as they did for me.
Marie Bonura McBride:
A life of enthusiasm and courage
Marie Bonura McBride was a 1964 graduate who had a
zest for life and remarkable courage.
In 1981, Marie became a T-2 paraplegic, the result of
a tragic accident that also killed her first husband Gene.
Through the years, Marie continued an independent
life with help from her family and health care workers,
and called upon her nursing background to work
on medical collections.
In 1996, Marie met Tom McBride and the two became
inseparable. Tom designed a specially built motor home
equipped with a wheelchair lift and other adjustments.
They enjoyed traveling and indulging in their love of river
rafting — a challenge Marie embraced.
Marie passed away on July 24, 2009 while travelling
with Tom in Utah and Colorado.
Many of Marie’s IWA classmates were fortunate to be
in touch with her over the past two years, as she had
been working with typical energy and enthusiasm to
organize a 1964 class reunion to be held this October.
Classmates will remember her, then and always, for her
courage and her love of life.
IN MEMORIUM
Dear Friends,
As I say goodbye to IWA after many years of service, I must say thank you to all of our benefactors who are so special to me
and to the Academy in every way. You have been dear friends and blessings. It has been difficult these past years with many
of my “friends” being called to Heaven. Each passing pulls on my heart strings. I would like to mention some special people
who passed away this past school year.
Charles Corona, who was always “Baldy” to me, passed away on Dec. 31, 2008. We lost a most loyal friend and benefactor.
Celebrating his 70th wedding anniversary with his wife Frances at Annunciation Church was a grand occasion. Very few
reach this wonderful milestone. I am saddened that I did not have the chance to tell him goodbye, but I did have the privilege
of bringing him Holy Communion when he was very ill a few years before God called him Home.
Joseph C. Johnson, was President of Scanlan Foundation and a devoted supporter of our Academy. Joe was taught by our
Sisters at Blessed Sacrament School, so his loyalty was part and parcel of him. I visited him at his home during his
illness and had the privilege of bringing him Holy Communion on his final day on Earth. He was forever generous
to Houston Catholic schools.
Eleanor Tinsley and her deceased husband Jim were donors for many, many years. Jim was my advisor when I wrote The
History of Annunciation Church–Catholic Mother Church of Houston in 1965 and we were dear friends ever since. Incarnate
Word Academy and the Houston community will miss Eleanor and her energetic work and philanthropic heart.
Al Vargo was on the Development Board for Marian High School from 1970 to 1976. He was so generous, hosting numerous
events at his beautiful restaurant, Vargos. Al was always there for the Sisters and our students. I had the privilege of
telling him goodbye, but it was still a very sad and lonely parting for me after 44 years of friendship.
Iris Webre, attended the IWA 2009 Gala in March at the age of 95. Iris was the personification of “living life to the fullest.”
I’ll continue to miss the lunches we shared with Christine Flanagan Imber ’31. Iris and her indomitable spirit will be
missed as well as her constant support of Incarnate Word Academy.
May their souls rest in praising God, who blessed them in so many special ways.
Sister Mary Brendan O’Donnell, C.V.I.
Sister Dorothy Braden, C.V.I
Nov.18, 1921 – August 23, 2009
Sister Dorothy Braden, C.V.I., a member of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and
Blessed Sacrament, was born in Burlington, TX. She was a Sister for 68 years. Her
years of ministry were dedicated to teaching, congregational and prayer ministry,
which benefitted thousands over the years. She was a very happy person with a beautiful
smile. She cared deeply for others and always looked after their needs. Her life
witnessed to God’s gentleness and kindness in the world. Surely, God is smiling as
he welcomes her back home after a life of dedication to His Son, Jesus, the Incarnate
Word and God’s people.
2008–2009 FINANCIAL REPORT
Incarnate Word Academy, founded in 1873 in Houston, Texas, is owned and operated by the Congregation of the
Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. The revenue and expenses listed below include only the activities of the
Academy. For the fiscal year 2008-2009, our tuition revenue (net of Scholarships/Financial Aid Awarded) represents 46
percent of our total revenue. While it costs the Academy over $12,290 to educate a student, our tuition last year was
only $7,600. For additional funding necessary to finance the full cost of education at IWA, the Academy relied mainly
on assistance from the Congregation, fundraising events and the generous support provided by foundations, alumnae,
parents and friends of the Academy.
IWA is audited annually and the audited reports are on file at the Academy.
This financial report is from un-audited statements not including Capital Campaign revenue and expenses.
