ACADEMICS Fieldtrip to NASA On April 20, 2009, the physics students visited NASA for the day. The day started with a one-hour panel discussion with six NASA women, including a flight surgeon, systems instructor, deputy director, bone scientist, deputy division chief, and manager. Each discussed their academic history, what led them to NASA and their job responsibilities. Later the girls toured the Saturn V rocket and the Johnson Space Center. « TAPPS 2009 Every year IWA prepares for the TAPPS District and State Competitions. Along with schools such as St. Agnes Academy, Duchesne, St. Pius X, St. Thomas, Christian and Beaumont Kelly, our girls compete in categories that cover every discipline — academic and artistic — and always make us proud in their effort and placing. Those who placed moved on to the State competition, held at Concordia University in Austin. In 2009, IWA girls placed in several categories and had a team of over 18 students eligible to go on to the State competition. At State we won ribbons and medals from First place to Sixth place and numerous Honorable Mentions. The IWA ladies also competed in the Music TAPPS held at a different time and location, and placed at both the District and State meets. « « Fieldtrip to the Federal Reserve Last spring, a group of seniors from the Math Models and Economics classes took a tour of the Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Houston. The students were told about the history and role of the Federal Reserve and toured the board room, security facilities and money vaults. The Houston branch of the Federal Reserve Bank is unique, given its post-9/11 architectural accommodations. At the end of the tour, each student was able to take home some of the bills that are destroyed daily as the bank replaces America’s money supply. The Word 4 Fall 2009
ACADEMICS « Graduation 2009 On May 23, 2009, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, D.D., S.T.L., presided over the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement of the 136th graduating class of IWA. The 72 graduates of 2009 earned over 2.8 million dollars in scholarship money and were accepted to schools across the country. Speeches were given by Valedictorian Paulina Sosa and Salutatorian Andrea Romero. 2009 Graduates Valedictorian, Paulina Sosa Carole Hanna McCann ’64 2009 Career Day Opens Doors « “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” was the theme for IWA’s annual Career Day. Over 30 speakers came to share their experiences, expertise and time with IWA students. The girls spent the morning visiting with individual speakers from diverse fields during four sessions. The girls learned about the education requirements for these varying careers, in addition to the job’s daily routine, opportunities available, pay scales and much more. Presentations on preparing for college, college campus resources and tips on crafting a resume were also available. IWA alumna Carole Hanna McCann ’64 was the keynote speaker and delighted the audience with her enthusiasm and stories about her theater arts work in Houston and abroad in Iraq. www.incarnateword.org 5 Fall 2009
