The Eastern of <strong>El</strong> <strong>Salvador</strong> is composed by 4 departments which are San Miguel, Usulután,<br />

Morazán, La Union, and we want you to know a little of these places …<br />

San Miguel<br />

San Miguel is a department of <strong>El</strong><br />

<strong>Salvador</strong> <strong>in</strong> the eastern part of the country.<br />

The capital is San Miguel. It has 2,077 km²<br />

and a population of over 450,000<br />

San Miguel was first known as San Miguel<br />

de la Frontera. The city was founded by<br />

Luis de Moscoso on May 8, 1530, where it<br />

is now Santa <strong>El</strong>ena. This territory was part<br />

of the Lenca Pr<strong>in</strong>cipality at the time of the<br />

conquest. On July 11, 1812 it was given the<br />

title of "Noble y Leal Ciudad" (noble and<br />

loyal city). It was made a department on<br />

June 12, 1824. San Miguel is the third most<br />

important city of the country, its<br />

characterized by its warm climate and all<br />

the beautiful places you can visit there, is<br />

called “La Perla de Oriente” and it has the<br />

biggest celebration of the Country, “<strong>El</strong><br />

Carnaval de San Miguel” <strong>in</strong> honor of “La<br />

Virgen de la Paz”<br />

This department has been the birthplace<br />

of illustrious personages of national<br />

history, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Gerardo Barrios, David<br />

J. Guzman, Juan Jose Cañas, Francisco<br />

Gavidia and Monseñor Oscar Arnulfo<br />

Romero.<br />

But is also known for its volcano, the<br />

Chaparrastique.
