National Family Violence Apprehension Detail
Mesa County Sheriff’s Office
October 13 th , 2005 at 1:30 P.M.
A Press Conference is scheduled for Thursday, October 13 th at the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office
to announce the successful completion and answer questions about our participation in the
National Family Apprehension Detail. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office was one of three law
enforcement agencies in Colorado to incorporate a Domestic Violence Enhanced Response Team
(DVERT), and work with agencies across the country, from California to Maine to Florida, in
the effort to arrest persons with outstanding family violence warrants. The 3 rd Annual Family
Violence Apprehension Detain included over 125 County Sheriff’s Departments, Police
Departments, Probation Departments, and community agencies from 35 states. All agencies
served outstanding arrest warrants with charges ranging from Harassment to Murder.
It is well known that victims of family violence are often reluctant to report to law enforcement
agencies. Of over half of the family violence crime that went unreported 13% of the persons
claimed they did not report the crime to law enforcement because it was “not important to
police”.(1) This collaborative effort hopes to raise awareness about the problem of family and
domestic violence in our communities and demonstrate that this social problem is important to
law enforcement and communities. It also demonstrates to offenders that they will be held
accountable for their violence and increase the safety of their victims.
Across the United States family violence affects numerous families everyday. According to the
Bureau of Justice Statistics, 3.5 million violent crimes were committed against family members
with 1.7 million crimes being committed against a spouse and of those, over 5200 resulted in the
death of the victim.(2) On a local level, since the year 2000, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office
responds to an average of 545 Domestic Violence calls per year and year to date for 2005,
Domestic Violence calls have reached over 420 so far this year.(3) The violence that women are
experiencing at the hands of their partners also affects children that are in the home. It is
estimated that nationally, 3.3 million children between 3 and 17 years of age witness some form
of domestic violence.(4)
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and agencies across the United States recognize the urgency
of this social problem. Below is a list of the suspects arrested in yesterday’s apprehension. 65
attempts were made to serve warrants, resulting in 10 actual arrests by the Mesa County Sheriff’s
Office Apprehension Team.
