The Core Subjects

• Top 3% of all state school in the UK for 5A*-C
including English and maths

English Baccalaureate
• School Performance: 75% of all students who
were eligible achieved this measure
• National Performance: 17% of students
achieved this measure

English
• Three Pathways:
– English Option 1: Two GCSE in English Language
and Literature taken over two years.
– English Option 2: English Single award taken in
May 2014 followed by a second GCSE in Media
– English Option 3: Single award English only taken
over two Years

Science
• The school will advise on the most
appropriate course for your son/daughter:
– iGCSE – Physics and Chemistry
– BTEC

Languages
• The majority of students must either choose a
core Language which you are already studying
from:
– French
– German
– Spanish
– Mandarin
– Japanese

The Pathway
–The core
–Two option choices these include:
• Two by invitation only
• Four BTEC courses
• A range of other GCSE courses
–You will be advised if a BTEC course is
the most appropriate course for you.

The Vocational Route
–The core (a streamlined core)
–Range of on and offsite qualifications

What is a BTEC
• A more practical way of working

• A number of internal and external assessed

• Award equivalent of 1 GCSEs “A*-C” grades
• Certificate equivalent of 2 GCSEs “A*-C” grades

Offsite Provision
• Equivalent of one/two GCSE grade
• A recognised progression route to
college/employment in practical subjects
• The opportunity to fast track post 16

Helpful Tips
• Don’t take a subject because you like your
current teacher.
• Do take a subject because you enjoy and are
good at it.
• Find out about courses you have not studied
before.

• Speak to your Tutor, Achievement co-ordinator or
subject teacher for advice
• Speak to current Year 10 students
• The only silly question is the one you do not ask
