MAGNETIC-STRIP SECONDARY GLAZING
Benefits
Major saving in heat loss; eliminates draughts and condensation
Neat and unobtrusive; easy to remove; store e.g. behind chest of drawers/ back of wardrobe/ under bed
Installing
Takes only a few minutes; no DIY skills needed
Put the steel strip round the window (you can paint
over it)
Put the magnetic strip round the sheet; and that’s it!
Materials
Acrylic, polycarbonate and PET don’t yellow or
deteriorate over time (unlike perspex/ polystyrene)
PET is fully recyclable
You can get 3mm (lighter) or 4mm (more rigid) sheet
Glass is cheaper but heavier and less easy to handle
You can use magnetic strip to magnetic strip, e.g.
Buying a kit
Try www.nigelsecostore.com (Ecoease) or www.diyplas.co.uk/Product.aspcatid=3&subcatid=369
You receive cut-to-size sheets and rolls of self-adhesive magnetic and steel strip
Buying separately – similar price to a kit
Try www.indigoplc.com/ecom-prodshow/magnetic-diy-secondary-glazing-kit.html for magnetic and steel strip
Local glazing co. (e.g. Lewes Glass) for cut-to-size plastic or glass sheets
Caveats
Not ideal for windows which you open frequently
May be impractical for windows over c.2.5 x 1.5 metres
For larger windows, and when using glass, add pegs or a batten at the bottom to support the sheet
Cleaning: mine don’t seem to need it. Washing-up liquid might be good. Never use special cleaners or anything but a soft
cloth
