CMC 3 Elections!
Our CMC 3 elections are underway. Paid members will receive their ballot in October with the mailed miniprogram.
Please return your ballot! We are still searching for people who would like to serve on the CMC 3
Foundation. If you would like to help us raise scholarship funds for students, please contact Barbara
Illowsky: illowskybarbara@deanza.edu .
Below are statements from some of our candidates running for elected positions. There are also appointed
positions that Mark Harbison will make in January. We would love to have you join us. Contact Mark:
President-Elect: Joseph Conrad, Solano Community College
I have been a member of CMC^3 since starting at Solano Community College in 1994. I have served as
the editor of the Brain Strain column in the Newsletter for many years and I have been the Membership
Chair since the end of 2007. This experience has allowed me to get to know our organization and its
members and has led me to aspire to serve you as President-Elect. Additionally, I received the AMATYC
Teaching Excellence Award in 2007 and the MAA Section Award for Distinguished College or University
Teaching of Mathematics in 2011. I look forward to continuing CMC^3’s mission to assist California
community college mathematics instructors with professional development opportunities through our
conferences and newsletter and to be a voice in current issues that affect the mathematical education.
Treasurer: Rebecca Fouquette, De Anza College
I am Rebecca Fouquette and I am running for treasurer. I have been the treasurer for California
Mathematics Council, Community Colleges for the past four years and am running for another term. Being
a mathematician, I am naturally good with numbers (haha!) which makes me the perfect candidate. I have
completed all required tax forms for CMC 3 and CMC 3 Foundation for the past four years, so I am well
informed about the procedures required for this position. Thank you for your vote.
Secretary: Tracey Jackson, Santa Rosa Junior College
I have served the CMC 3 Board in the capacity of Adjunct Advocate for a number of years. In doing so, I have
been an active participant in a number of areas, including filling in as Secretary when needed and assisting
with various duties at the conferences. I enjoy being involved with CMC 3 and would like to continue to
serve the organization by being on the Board. At this time, I feel I am better able to serve the organization
as the Secretary. I am familiar with the position and am able to fulfill the duties as Secretary in a manner
that will help keep CMC 3 running smoothly.
At-Large: Dean Gooch, Santa Rosa Junior College
I have been teaching community college mathematics for a little over thirty years. My undergraduate
degree is a BS in Entomology from UC Berkeley and my MA is in Mathematics from Sonoma State
University. I got my first full-time teaching job at Diablo Valley College in 1989 and was able to move
near my family and childhood community when I was awarded a teaching position at Santa Rosa Junior
College in 1994. I have also worked at Napa Valley College, College of Marin and Chabot College.
I began volunteering for CMC 3 in about 1985. I am not sure when exactly I did what but I was the person
in charge of equipment for speakers, CMC liaison and worked for a number of years as the membership
chair among other jobs. I also acted as a delegate at AMATYC and have spoken at many conferences and
schools over the past thirty years. I have more recently been a Vice Chair, Chair and Program Chair for
the MAA Golden Section and was the Site Manager for the recent very successful MAA Golden Section
General Meeting that was held on the Santa Rosa Junior College Campus.
I took a hiatus from my duties with CMC 3 during the years in which I was most busy with my daughter’s
activities. Now that Daphne is off to college, she needs less everyday attention and I would like to
become more involved with the CMC 3 Board again and help with the wonderful conferences that are put
on by that board. Also, I would like to help represent Santa Rosa Junior College. I believe that talks at
CMC 3 conferences should include mathematics content as well as pedagogy. Thank you for your
consideration.
At-Large Steve Blasberg, West Valley College
As a long-time member of the CMC^3 Board, I feel that by serving another term as an At-Large Member, I
can bring many positives to the Board, among them, institutional memory and long experience with CMC^3.
In addition, as an active member of several other mathematical organizations (I currently hold the position of
Test Developer with AMATYC, and I am past chair of the AIME Subcommittee of the MAA), I can represent
both the viewpoint of CMC^3 within other organizations and other organizations' viewpoints within CMC^3. I
hope that you will see fit to reelect me to the CMC^3 Board.
