The sparse little, albeit
enthusiastic, groups of
spectators were lulled
into a soft kind of expectatation
of a mediocre
race by a gathering of
aging men in well dated
machinery as the 20 or
so Sports and GT Cars
wound their tyrewarming
weaving way
around the famous and
still surviving Kyalami
racetrack at the July 8 th
National Historic Day. In
the distance and out of
sight the rolling start
changed the meandering
gathering of the various
marques into a powerful
procession of mania into
the first corner and like
an unannounced and almighty
brattle of thunder
the cars re-emerged
out of the old pit
straight and into Sunset
descending down on Clubhouse
on their first lap
at race speed surpriseshocking
the spectators
into rapt enthusiastic engagement
with the stunning
display of fantastic
racing that played out
before their very eyes.
Spearheading the long
train of delightfully
turned out cars from
various periods and differing
marques was the
powerful and extremely
well sorted Cobra of
Tony Martin. Spearheading
the train of cars, but
only by a micrometer
measurement was Tony
from the man who has
not yet realised he has
retired from professional
racing; barreling into
Sunset at a huge rate of
knots were Tony and his
tormenter, side by side,
V8 versus V8, Ford versus
the old enemy. The
Tony Tormentor was so
hell bend on passing the
Cobra that he hung his
big Chevvy half onto the
grass on the outside of
Sunset as he aimed for
the same spot of the rapidly
approaching Clubhouse
corner as Tony. As
if this was not spectacular
enough, he then proceeded
to slow down his
massive Camaro by some
impossible miracle as the
car snaked from side to
side and
into the sharp lefthander
and off towards
the Esses and beyond
trading inch of track for
inch went the dueling pair.
What a curtain raiser for
the spectators!
Indeed the few spectators
could well have been
prepared to expect racing
of a much lower caliber to
follow, taking into consideration
that the opening
pair were truly awesome
is undisputed, as Tony
Martin and Willie Hepburn
has been part of
South African racing
scene for four and plenty
years, but pleasantly surprised
they certainly
were as wave after wave
of dicing groups followed
for a good thirty or forty
seconds. Just enough
time for them to get
their breath back, and
take a swig of some cooling
elixir from the depths
of their cooler boxes.
Then around into view
again came the Cobra desperately
trying to shake
of the lowly Chev that
was hounding it, again into
Sunset and through into
Clubhouse, in and out
through the Esses and out
of sight up to Wesbank
only to reappear as one
down the Mineshaft attacking
each other all the
way and into the righthander
Superbowl and on
over to the new Bus-stop.
Well there was absolutely
no stopping these two!
This did not last two or
three laps either, it
lasted the entire heat! In
fact it was momentarily
disturbed as the light yet
powerful Rotary Tiga in
the hands of another of
South African’s great
racing sons, (Bernard Tilanus),
as it screamed
past into first position
even though it started
way back on the grid a
few laps earlier, however
the fight resumed in the
Tiga’s wake and at some
stages it looked like Willie
had the measure of the
Cobra but the heat was to
finish with Tilanus 1 st ,
Martin 2 nd and Hepburn
3 rd . Interestingly the big
Chevvy set a faster laptime
than Ford Cobra although
it finished behind
on the track.
Just one race meeting
left in the Championship
for 2009! It is definite
we will have a new Saloon
Car Champion this
year but the other
Championships are still
up in the air. The Committee
has decided to
change the format of
the prize giving for this
year and we will hold it
on a Saturday early
next year, being a lively
family orientated affair
at lunchtime. The exact
date will be advised.
Kobus Theron has been
working quietly in the
background trying to
raise the awareness of
our club. To date he has
Photo by kind courtesy of Barry Scott
had two articles
published in the
daily press promoting
our races
at upcoming race
meetings as well
as working with
Stuart Grant on
publishing articles
in Classic & Performance
Car.
These things are
slow to start but
once going, they
seem to snowball.
Thanks for your
efforts Kobus.
Racing at Midvaal on
Saturday saw the
weather go from winter
the previous Saturday
to a full blown summer‘s
day. Good fields
and with television coverage,
a great braai afterwards,
the day was a
success. It certainly is
good to see Midvaal
with a full day‘s racing
and also a good number
of paying spectators.
Although the circuit
leaves a lot to be desired,
I would appreciate
your feedback as to
how you found the circuit
and/or the facilities.
Rules for 2010 are being
finalised at present.
The committee has received
no feedback
from you, the members,
as to what you like or
dislike in the current
rules so I assume that
all is well and, as per
normal, there will be a
lot of chirping when the
rules for 2010 are published.
An idea was put
forward that we roll the
year of eligibility every
year. The committee
were not in favour of
this. Your thoughts on
the issue There has
been a lot of consultation
between Cape
Town and Gauteng to
come up with a set of
rules that apply countrywide.
I am pleased to
say that great progress
is being made on this
score and soon, maybe
a bit later, rules for Historic
Racing will apply
countrywide.
Next year promises to
be exciting. Something
is in the pipeline that will
allow us to determine
our own destiny and not
be dictated to by those
who don‘t understand
our type of racing. As
soon as the final details
Elephants
never forget!
In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in
Kenya after graduating from Northwestern
University ....
On a hike through the bush, he came
across a young bull elephant standing
with one leg raised in the air.
The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter
approached it very carefully.
He got down on one knee, inspected the
elephant’s foot, and found a large piece of
wood deeply embedded in it.
As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter
worked the wood out with his knife,
after which the elephant gingerly put down
its foot.
Funny Bone Corner
Twenty years later, Peter was walking
through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged
son.
Page 6
As they approached the elephant enclosure,
one of the creatures turned and
walked over to near where Peter and his
son Cameron were standing.
The large bull elephant stared at Peter,
lifted its front foot off the ground, then put
it down.
The elephant did that several times then
trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at
the man.
Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter
could not help wondering if this was the
same elephant.
Peter summoned up his courage, climbed
over the railing, and made his way into the
enclosure.
He walked right up to the elephant and
stared back in wonder.
The elephant turned to face the man, and
with a rather curious look on its face,
stared at him for several tense moments.
Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing
else but being trampled.
The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its
trunk around one of Peter legs and
slammed him against the railing, killing
him instantly.
Probably wasn't the same elephant.!
Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly,
turned, and walked away.
Peter never forgot that elephant or the
events of that day.
This month's mirth comes form Bruce Pidwell

For What it’s Worth
Kyalami – July 11 th 2009
Terry Allan
The huge cost of racing
somehow seems justified
when you race at Kyalami.
I‘m not having a go at other
tracks, but somehow it just
feels right at Kyalami. I can
understand why Evert Botha
really looked disgruntled in
the pits. His car was not
ready. Having said this, I did
run around for some time to
try to get a bog roll into the
loos – any loo would do. They
were fresh out on the Thursday
before the race I gather.
Peter sees to this aspect
much better at Zwartkops.
On second thoughts, perhaps
I AM having a go at other
tracks – though Zwartkops
and Phakisa really are rather
special. In the voting that I
asked for by the way,
Phakisa beat Zwartkops by a
tiny margin. Interesting in that
it‘s so far away and such an
expensive weekend. I‘m
afraid the only reason to go to
Midvaal is a long straight and
it‘s close. I‘m really concerned
that the attendance at
Lichtenburg will be suffering
from now on.
Qualifying started at 7:35
a.m. and Pierre van Hell in
the Lotus 7 contrived to go
slower than Lindsay in the
Flying Orange. Now I‘m really
upset that Pierre has plans to
abscond to Cape Town
sometime but Pierre, you‘re
going to have to start racing
when you are at Kyalami my
son.
I was a bit quicker than Ronel
and ahead of us was Howard
in the Marcos – just a second
slower than Ronel! That Marcos
is really performing well –
at last. And you can see
Howard is loving it!
We were combined with the
Alfa guys and had a total entry
of 43. We‘ll go into the
merits of this later but I think
some of the Alfa guys had a
problem with the starting
timer. Not only them but
some marshals as well.
Firstly Lindsay went off 20
seconds early because a
marshal TOLD her to go and
from, I‘d say about 2/3 of the
way back, we started going
off late....and later and later
until we were 25 seconds late
at the back. It‘s all very well
saying that you should go
when your time comes up but
if you are more than 1 space
back from the start – you
can‘t see the numbers.
AND...you can‘t just pull out
into the way of other cars already
lapping you. Very
dicky.
Lindsay broke out anyway so
her early start didn‘t affect
things. For those of us who
went off late....not a hope in
hell of making up the time. A
pity really. Having said this I
must also say that the collective
opinion has been that we
leave the points as they are.
Not unanimous, but close.
Kevin Taylor took the honours
followed by Johan Botha
in another Capri - that immaculate
yellow Perana. Fritz
was 3 rd in the Mini Marcos
with a charging Howard Nel 6
seconds adrift. I was next
ahead of Keith in the D-Type,
Ronel, Buck Madden then
Jacob Devilliers Hoffman
(new guy) in that superb
Johan Botha prepared Ford
Escort. Johan v.d. Merwe
was quietly next followed by
Michelle who must have had
a problem. Simon Taylor
broke a clutch in the Lancia
and Deon Hatting broke a
side-shaft – AGAIN. Lindsay
and Peter MacIldowie were
disqualified as were the other
Johan Botha in the Martini
Porsche, Rey Cornelissen,
Colin Kean in the Merc. and
Willie Grobler had a problem
of some kind.
In race 2 Johan Botha in the
Porsche just made sure he
didn‘t break out – by .2 of a
second, and he finished first
followed by Isi in the Cripple
S, Peter MacIldowie, Keith
van Heerden, Ronel, Johan in
the Mini and Johan Botha in
the Capri. Howard was next
followed by Giuseppe, Fritz,
Rey, Colin Kean, myself and
Michelle. Buck and Jacob
broke out.
Racing with the Alfa guys is
not a problem we all seem to
agree. I think they race less
often than we do but their self
-preservation instinct is fairly
well developed. I did notice
however that there are no
Spiders racing. This means
that they are not used to cars
lower than their own waistline.
On two occasions I was
going past one side when
they noticed another Alfa on
the other side and I was
pushed off into the mealies!
On the subject of 43 cars
starting a handicap race
Even at Kyalami – too many.
The jam from the second last
lap on is just too chaotic. I‘d
say there were 10 of us coming
through the new corner
together (which everyone
seems to love – in spite of
it‘s being described by a guy
who really should know, as
the most dangerous in the
country!) when an Alfa spun
in front of me. I chose
mealies on the right – should
have gone left, and was
passed by all the guys I‘d just
passed. But hey – ―This is not
a contact sport‖ and, somehow,
we managed to preserve
the image.
Overall it was a wonderful
day for Isi who was first, with
Johan Botha in the Capri Perana
second and Kevin Taylor
third. Keith van Heerden,
Howard, Ronel, Fritz followed
with Johan in the Mini ahead
of myself, Johan Botha
(Porsche) Peter, Michelle,
Buck, Jacob, and Giuseppe
next. Rey of course got 0 for
heat 1 and Simon 0 for heat 2
followed by Colin Kean, Lindsay
and Willie.
Thanks for all the input from
you guys (and girls). I look
forward to seeing you all at
Midvaal.
1968 CHEVROLET
CAMARO driven by
DAVID PIPER
the Southern based
GP Speed Shop which
was established in the
mid 1960s by South
African race mechanic
Pierre Du Plessis who
worked on Ferraris,
This 1968 Chevrolet
Camaro is driven by
David Piper entered by
Tim Boles of TCB Racing.
Why is David
Piper driving a 1968
Chevrolet Camaro
when he is most usually
known for his exploits
during the
1960’s in Ferrari GTOs,
and P4s and the Porsche
917
The answer of course
lies in the fact that
David used to race a
black 1968 Chevrolet
Camaro in the 1968
and 1969 British Touring
Car Championship,
winning against the favoured
front runner
Frank Gardner at Crystal
Palace in his big
block Camaro. Frank
later went on the win
the BTCC.
The background to the
black racing Camaro is
as ever with stories of
David Piper’s exploits
a matter of public record
and David vs. Goliath
achievements.
The story began with
GT40s and Lolas and
similar from a none
too salubrious premises
at the Ham, Brentford
Middlesex. He
saw the opportunity in
producing Beach Buggies
in the UK, and at
last saw his chance
when he brought a
“Manx” beach buggy
kit from the US and
stowed it aboard the
sleeping compartment

Page 13
OLD ADVERT, GREAT CAR!
of the support vehicle
of the Formula 3 team
When the kit eventually
arrived in the UK
Pierre and his partner
John Jobber set about
designing what became
the GP Beach
Buggy- GP standing
for Grand Prix- it was
an immediate hit in
London at the time
during the swinging
sixties, and a boom resulted
with GP eventually
producing a
he was working with at
that time.
stretched version and
even an LDV pickupothers
followed but GP
was the UK forerunner
of the entire UK Beach
Buggy craze.
Pierre Du Plessis managed
a racing team in
Britain and entered
David Piper in the 1968
Black Camaro in the
BTCC in period. Tragically
Pierre died at the
age of only 38 as a result
of complications
arising from an appendicitis
operation.
The 1968 Chevrolet
Camaro entered in the
2009 Pageant of Power
is very similar to the
du Plessis 1968 black
racing Chevrolet
Camaro which has had
recent technical problems.
Despite the best efforts of the
HSGT Committee, Midvaal
continues to be a problem circuit
for entries for Sports & GT.
The fact that the race was held
on a long weekend (as it was
in 2008!), did not help either.
Even the Historic Saloon entry
was depleted from the mega
turnout at Kyalami. The Northe
r n
R e -
g i o n s
Committee really does have to
pay more attention in this regard
for 2010. The fact that, at
the last Zwartkops meeting, the
regional classes were placed
after the club races on an already
overcrowded programme
does not endear the
competitors to the series.
Hopefully in 2010 where there
already moves afoot to overhaul
the regional series, the
competitors will be treated with
more respect.
There is no doubt that there
are more ―gentleman racers‖ in
Sports & GT is a bit of a worldwide
phenomenon and the
chance of a long weekend is
quickly taken. Also despite
much work done by the HSGT
committee to attract the sports
racing replicas, these competitors
make no appearances
a p a r t f r o m s e l e c t e d
―showcase‖ events.
Nevertheless an entry of 13
cars for Midvaal was a fair turnout
although the day saw the
demise of a number of competitors
with mechanical problems.
Qualifying saw Tony Martin
knocked off his usual pole by
Chris Clarke‘s BDA Morgan as
Tony battled with brake problems
and seriously worn tyres.
Clive Densham did not qualify
and was placed in third at the
back of Class C after but after
an accident earlier in the day
had to start from the pit lane.
This was to have consequences
for him that no one
expected. Evert Botha suffered
terminal engine problems and
withdrew his Porsche. Championship
leader, Stefan
Puschavez took fourth and
fastest in Class D ahead of
Alex Divov and his championship
rival, Mike Altona. Roger
Pearce comfortably qualified
fastest in Class E with Rohann
Theron fastest in F and Deon
Hattingh in Class G.
Race 1 saw Clive Densham
start from the pit lane and he
moved through the field on the
pace lap to take up his third
place but unknown to him he
had been moved to the back of
the grid and was subsequently
disqualified. Clive was not
amused! Tony Martin went to
the front but after an ―off ―at the
end of the back straight, Chris
Clarke moved to the front. He
also went off a few laps layer
and Tony cruised to another
victory. Stefan Puschavez
blitzed the rest of Class D to
take third. In Class E Roger
Pearce was pulling away from
Howard Nel but suffered a severely
slipping clutch and overheating
and had to concede to
the Marcos. After Rohann
Theron failed to start with
clutch failure, Gary Blake in his
beautifully turned out Triumph
GT6 cruised to a Class F victory
while newcomer Jackie
van Breda took Class G in her
Porsche.
Race 2 saw the Martin/Clarke
dice resume but the Morgan
had swallowed a bonnet full of
dust in the Race 1 off and after
feeling a misfire Chris decided
to pull into the pits rather than
risk the motor. Stefan
Puschavez hounded the Martin
Cobra and got into the lead for
a few laps before Tony passed
him for the win. Alex Divov
took a good third place and
second in Class D ahead of
Mike Altona. The Pearce/Nel
battle in Class E lasted for a
few laps until Pearce was unable
to keep the car moving
forward as the previous clutch
problem reappeared. Gary
Blake again took Class F and
Jackie van Breda, Class G. As
the race was held on the
Women‘s Day weekend,
Jackie was also awarded the
special ―Woman Driver of the
Day‖ prize.
The championship is now a
battle to the finish between
Puschavez and Altona with just
eight points separating them
and one round to go at Zwartkops
on September 19 th . It will
be a good one, don‘t miss it!
There was a time when
famous Formula One drivers
not only didn‘t take
themselves that seriously
and also drove other race
cars in what one would
consider lesser classes of
racing such as sports car,
at the 24 hour bunfight in
France and certainly would
also race in Formula Two
events –sadly at such an
event in Hockenheim the
beloved Jim Clark was
killed-driving a totally uncompetitive
Lotus which
saw him starting way back
on the grid. But that was
then and now the untouchables
compete only in the
Elite category.
However, May 31 st
will see the rebirth of the
Formula Two Championship
with the last race having
taken place some 25
years ago. Among the 33
provisional entries are
some famous names:-
Alex Brundle (Martin‘s son)
Henry Surtees (John Surtees)
Jolyon Palmer
(Jonathan Palmer) Jack
Clarke ( Roger) Jason
Moore (soccer‘s Bobby
Moore).
The brainchild of
former F1 driver Jonathan
Palmer with design
assistance from Team Williams
and in particular Patrick
Head who used some
clever methods to keep
costs down. Rather than
going the route of the very
expensive carbon fibre
they have used carbon
composites—suspension
components are largely
symmetrical and therefore
inter-changeable which obviously
reduces the number
of spare parts needed.
The JPH1 car was
designed entirely through
a CPD programme using
an outside contractor assisted
by Patrick Head and
it was decided to NOT use
a wind tunnel which, apart
from pushing up casts
would also have interfered
with the continual development
of William‘s F1 effort.
The one make series
will not be linked to F1
as is the GP2 championship,
Palmer feels that the
fees demanded would be
astronomical and rather
than being linked to the F1
support bill they prefer the
deal arranged with Eurosport
which provides live
TV coverage.
Each driver has to
pay 100,000 pounds before
the opening race at
the Valencia circuit and
then continue regular payments
throughout the season.
Anyone defaulting will
be replaced by others from
the waiting list of those
who missed the boat.
Palmer states that
all of the top GP2 teams
have massive budgets with
which they can ―buy‖ an
advantage but ―in F2 an
advantage cannot be
bought—it is like going into
the Lion‘s Den and you
can be sure that the F1
teams will be watching to
see the super talent of who
wins here‖
The initial JPH1 car
was launched recently and
although run with incorrect
tyres and wrong settings
was very impressive. The
tyres used were from the
Formula Audi -- special
new casings were not
ready and no suspension
adjustments were done at
the track because it was
merely a demo run with
testing still to be carried
out later. So watch this
space for what could be
some competitive competition
After all the hassles
that I‘d had during the
year, I was carefully optimistic
of finishing a race
for a change. The gearbox
had been fixed and
was fitted along with the
engine on the week-end
before the race. When
checking on the sundries,
I found that the throttle
was not returning properly
and found one of the
throttle cross bar bolts
loose. I had also reset
the rear suspension
again for hopefully better
cornering and had cut
some foam out of the
seat cushion to sit a bit
lower.
I could only work from
about 5 in the afternoon
until it got dark before it
got so cold that I had to
sleep next to my own
wife at night .On the
week-ends was the only
other times although I
had to work until 11
o‘clock on both days the
week-end before the
race. On top of that I only
have yours truly and the
medem to do the job.
The medem she make
the tea, but also helps to
lift the engine onto the
jack and position when
installing.
On race day we set off
not long after 5 before
sparrow‘s and stood outside
the gate until 6 as
usual. The pit area for
the Touring cars was a bit
full when we pitched and
we moved lower down
towards the Marque car/
Pre-66 area. It seems the
norm lately and I sometimes
wonder if times are
tough if so many people
can be off work to practice
on Fridays. After doing
documentation and
scrutineering, the engine
was warmed up and luckily
the car started without
too much hassle.
Just a few laps into
practice, the red flags
came out with a few cars
stranded including Alan
in the Perana who had
locked up brakes and
spun into the litter at the
first ―S‖. Don Bruins ran
out of fuel etc, etc, etc.
When we got going
again, it took a while to
familiarise myself with
the new ‗kink‘ that has
replaced the little zig-zag
before the pit corner.
I spent more time running
around after practice
to try and get a grid
sorted than what I spectated.
We tried to fit people
in at the back of their
classes and then fixed
the classes as well. After
the 3 rd attempt, Mr. Cavalieri
decided that he
wanted to start in the
original position and not
at the back with the rest
of the Heritage class.
Jimbo then went and
had all the heritage cars
start in their original positions
and brought out a
final grid about 10 minutes
before race time.
With this change all the
classes that had been
rectified went back to
square one-making it
necessary to ‗fix‘ them
again before the second
heat.
On the warm up lap going
through sunset, Nortman
over-revved the Toyota
and ventilated the
block.
The pace car set a fast
lap around the circuit and
then slowed the pack
down coming down the
mineshaft. By the time
we got into the pit
straight the front guys
were already into their
higher gears. Luckily
there were no incidents
that I know of and all and
sundry got through without
problem.
After 1 lap Hobson and
Werner both retired and
Wayne Wetton in the rattax
gave a new meaning
to the words;‖hot ass‖
when his newly fitted exhaust
box let the driver
seat get so hot, that it ignited
his seat cushion below
him. Norman in the
SSS pulled off after 2
laps when he blew a
head gasket and Cavalieri
retired the big
Beemer with gearbox
trouble. Ash in the 131
retired after 4 laps with a
problem and Ubsdell had
the module on the electronic
ignition die after 4
laps.
Out front Hepburn and
Francois were throwing
everything at each other
with Jono trying to hold
onto them with Odendaal
following him closely.
Sing and van Rooyen
were pushing on and
pulling a slight gap on
Barbolini and Wetton.
Densham being out for
the first time this year,
had a slight gap on Alan
Green who was being followed
by the dicing trio of
Lobb snr, G jnr and
Sanne with Scott
amongst the bunch
Theo van Vuuren was
giving Cindy uphill with
Ellison a distance away.
Bruins at first had Parker
to dispose of and the
wider wheel on the
Mazda eventually gave
him some better cornering
speed to build a gap
with Warren keeping
them honest. Gouws was
following this bunch with
the scrap of Roberts jnr,
Alan, Jimbo, Justin and
Lombard not far behind,
Cloete getting between
Lombard and the bunch
in front of him. Behind
them Whittal and Roberts
snr were having their
own duel with Kevin riding
shotgun behind them.
Pereira was being
chased by Anton and Marenga
with Guiseppe,
Thys and Willem keeping
each other honest whilst
Carel decided to play it
safe, drive carefully so
that the sand bags don‘t
move around and tear.
Isi and Kevin were nose
to tail all the way and van
Nieuwenhuizen jnr up
next keeping ahead of
van Schalkwyk. Collings,
Green and Cabrita were
entertaining while Wannenburg
followed them
as did Ed with a down on
power motor.
that as he was
close to Clubhouse, saw
Du Toit coming up,
waved him to the left and
the next minute thought
du Toit was being
―windgat‖ as he came
past him backwards, the
brakes having malfunctioned
and leaving him
stranded against the wall.
While the dice was going
on, Jimbo was blocking
the bug every time
Cloete tried a passing
maneuvers. Going into
the bowl to start the 6 th
lap, Jimbo was driving in
his mirrors and just before
turning looked in the
mirror and down, saw
that he was supposed to
have started braking before,
then, locked up the
brakes and punted Justin
sideways, letting the 2
Beetles through in the
process. Ladner retired
as he was not sure what
damage there might be.
Jacobs also retired after
6 laps.
On the last lap going
into the pit straight Gerber
tried and overtaking
move on Willie and
promptly got the door
shut ,Francois locking the
brakes in the process.
The final results were
Hepburn from Francois, a
very sideways Odendaal,
Sing, Jannie, Wetton,
Barbolini, Densham,
Green, Sanne, G jnr,
Lobb snr, Cindy, van
Parker, Warren, Gouws,
Scott-pulling off with boiling
radiator and blown
head gasket, Roberts jnr,
Alan, Cloete, Lombard,
Whittal, Roberts snr,
Armstrong, Pereira, Anton,
Marengo, Martini,
Thys, Willem, Carel,
Kevin, Isi, van Nieuwenhuizen
jnr, Deon, Manny,
Colin, Collings, Wannenburg,
Ed, Jacobs and
Bennet last qualified finisher
. Between heats it
was the usual run around
to do a grid as we did not
know who was going to
race and who not of the
retiree‘s.
GUYS, IT IS YOUR
OWN DUTY TO INFORM
THE C.O.C whether you
are going to do the next
race. So please in future
do so.
Because of the final revision
of the first heat
grid, the classes that had
been changed were
I.S.M in the system again
and had to be rectified for
the second heat.
John Simpson came
around and told the people
to line up in pit lane in
their positions before going
out, but only a few
competitors obliged and
we went out onto the grid
proper the same way as
the first heat. The marshals
requested this as it
took a long time to try
and sort the grid for the
first heat.
While the cars were getting
ready to leave the
pits, Willie‘s merry crew
were still working on adjusting
the suspension
and fitting other rubber.
The second heat start
was a much quicker affair
with the front guys gone
around turn 2 by the time
we got into the pit
straight. Here and there,
there were some big
gaps between the
groups. Some people lost
out and some people
scored. Most of us backmarkers
were basically
racing before we got into

the pit straight.
Out front it was again
Gerber and Willie giving
it all with Jono lagging a
bit behind and Sing and
Odendaal staying with
the latter of the V8 trio.
Jannie had Barbolini and
Wetton to keep him company
and Sanne had
Densham and G jnr to
contend with. Theo in his
trusty Datty was wringing
the Datty‘s neck to stay
with Alan and Lobb with
Cindy keeping him honest
and Francois following
her. Ellison was dicing
with Vonk jnr and
Parker .Boet in the Fiat
was giving it stick until
the Fiat started making
some rumbling noises
and he retired after 4
laps. Sing retired after 7
laps
Don in the Mazda opted
to drive a slightly conservative
race and kept
ahead of the bug of
Cloete who pushed hard
and got ahead of Warren
and Alan in the Perana.
Mike in the Merc pulled a
comfortable gap on the
following bunch of his
dad, Lombard, Marengo
and Anton Vos. Two laps
from the end, Marengo
got past Lombard a time
or two, but then getting
outrun in the straight line,
only to repass the bug
again later.
Ladner had his hands
full to try and get clear of
Kevin and Willem, being
followed by Thys, Carel,
Pereira, van Nieuwenhuizen
jnr ,Green in the
323 and Herman until the
SSS decided it was time
to park again ahead of
Ash and Kevin. Joe in his
new true blue ‗Scort was
battling with Isi and Van
Schalkwyk. Ed was driving
the wheels off the
Mini with Wannenburg in
attendance. Cabrita and
Collings had a slight
scrap until Collings pulled
away.
When the results were
published eventually the
timekeepers had split all
the different classes up
and it was a slight head
scratch to check on overall
positions.
On our second last tour
we saw van Schalkwyk
pulled off close to Sunset
with the fire truck in close
attendance. He had
pulled off and the exhaust
ignited the grass.
On the slow down lap
Cloete in the bug had
one of the pressed in
plates on the one carb
come out starting an engine
fire and he pulled off
close to van Schalkwyk
to also be ‗blown out‖.
Phil in the 240Z picked
up a misfire and kept on
circulating to score points
Final result had Hepburn
from Gerber followed
by Odendaal, Jannie
pulling a slight gap,
Wetton, Barbolini, Jon,
Densham Green, Sanne,
Lobb, Theo, Cindy, Francois,
Werner, Parker, Ellison,
and Pantazis. Class
E was won by Bruins followed
by Cloete, Warren,
Alan, Mike, Mashengo,
Lombard, Selwyn, Anton,
Kevin, Justin, Willem,
Carel, Thys,
After the race I found a
bit of oil on the rear valance
and upon checking,
it seems as though the
breather pipe that I had
changed was letting
some oil spill out. I have
in the meantime fixed this
by re-routing it to hopefully
eliminate such a
problem. For a change I
actually did not have a lot
to do between the racestouch
wood except some
paint touching up and
have I in the meantime
bought a small steel
shack to put some garage
rubbish into so that
if necessary, I can work
in the garage in these
cold times. I got some
bricks from my long time
sponsor A-B Brickworks
that I will put in as flooring
once I have made
some reinforcements on
the hut.
It seems like everything
else these days-you pay
the monies, but the quality
of and the service is
lacking. I am sure that if I
tried hard enough, I
would almost be able to
push my finger through
the ‗zinc‘.
By the time we read
this, there will only be
one race meeting left and
who knows what the long
finger of fate will have
dished up
There are rumours floating
about of some very
high entry fees for next
year. If the figures being
waved about are true, I
don‘t think there will be
very large fields about,
as most of us don‘t have
very large budgets and/or
big sponsors. I wonder
whose interests are being
looked after
here…..Let‘s see anyway.
indecently quick it kept up
with the front-runners
for a long stretch of the
heat and finished an incredible
4 th behind the
two massive V8’s. Mike
Altona in the Dart did exactly
that, darted in and
around the rapid Scirocco
of Alex Divov but Alex
closed the door, sometimes
rather loudly, leaving
room for the Dart
darter to threaten, but
no further. Altona’s Dart
however, also with its
1600 Ford power, finished
ahead of much more powerful
cars such as the
Terry Allen V8 Morgan,
the V6 Marcos of Howard
Nel and a host of 2 or
more liter Alfas.
Nothing is more dangerous
as a woman scorned…
except of course a Roger
Pearce who spins out of
the first lap resulting in
him fighting his way back
to his rightful place in the
pack from the hind tit position,
at the back of the
bunch! Robbed he was of
his usual spot in the middle
of the deck but not
robbed of a sight for sore
eyes were the race
watchers who saw this
yellow MG carve its way
past one, two sometimes
three cars a lap until the
rage mist probably began
to subside inside the MG
pilot’s helmet enough for
him to race as a more
sane pace. Well Pearce
persevered and managed
to pierce his way up to
and indeed past the exquisitely
quick Dallara of
Bruce Pidwell but sadly
Roger had asked too much
of his MG and it let go on
the very last lap within
sight of the final
straight. The melted piston
made it early beer
time for the disappointed
Roger. Another legal beer
imbiber by lunchtime was
Chris Myres who damaged
his TRV and had it
trailored and home ready
while his buddies were all
in a tizz prepping for race
two.
With the SPORTS & GT’S
dazzling display of superlative
racing the crowd
were definitely in the
mood for more of the
same and they were not
to be disappointed. The
field of cars for heat one
of the Historic Touring
Cars was relatively small.
BLISTERING PACE SCENE SETTER!
Kyalami 11th July 2009
course being the operative
word…. Relative to
the number of bicycles in
Beijing the 61 cars on the
grid would be classified as
small, however as the biggest
single field at Kyalami
this year it was a
truly awesome sight to
behold, WELL DONE TO
THE HRCR!!!
The enormous field of
marvelous historic touring
cars machinery had the
now increasing number of
spectators utter an exclamation
or three such
as, “gee did you see that
Beetle go, or was that a
Datsun ahead of the
Alfa, or what a massive
field of cars”. Of course
this was only on the warm
up lap!!! When the real
racing started it was the
70’s all over again with
Ford Escorts against the
indestructible Datsuns
versus the Alfa brigade,
the Minis, Mazda’s of
various guises and engine
configs. and all with top
class drivers taking them
through their paces. In
spite of the rarity of replacement
parts and the
sheer value of their
equipment, the drivers
drove their cars to the
very edge of the envelopes
and a bit beyond and
this was really appreciated
by the spectators.
Willie Hepburn was at it
again, up front and flying.
It was interesting to see
the brave ones who challenged
the new bus-stop
complex flat out and who
backed off. The Lobb Fiat
123 was the first to stir
up the dust here but
came to no harm. The
dust had hardly settled
before it was unceremoniously
unsettled anew, this
time in the Super-Bowl as
the Rotary Mazda took
its pilot towards an early
shower in a kitty-litter
cloud of dust, pungent
blinding smoke, (which got
in his eyes!!!) and finally
(but very soon thereafter)
the fine white powder
dust of the Kyalami
Marshals’ fire extinguishers!!!
After all that
amount of dust the early
shower must have been
really welcomed by the
driver, Wayne Wetton.
The reason for the
forced exit; an exhaust
silencer box incorrectly
positioned leaving Wayne
with a fire in the seat of
his pants.
As the race progressed
the casualties began to
mount; the BMtroubleyou
745 slowed past the already
retired yellow Escort
between the Superbowl
and the new Bus-
Stop. In fact there were
more cars towed off after
the race than normally
start a national

event and there was still a
huge field of finishers, 54
in all!
The repaired two-tone
white Datsun of Philip
Pantazis showed the way
to the ex- john Simpson
Alfa and the Uli Sanne
BMW 2002 but the BM
had the last laugh by finishing
just ahead but the
Alfa fell further back
with Ellison tyre-smokingpirouetting
through the
Super Bowl which needless
to say slowed his progress
down considerably.
Alan Poulter who in
qualifying took a
breather…..in the kitty
litter! Necessitating in
the quali session being
curtailed to everyone’s
disappointment, climbed
steadily from 44 th on
the grid to a very respectable
22 nd , just behind
the massive Merc
of Mike Roberts. Some
very impressive work
was recently carried out
on Mike’s Merc and it
surely possesses the
most pristine engine bay
in the racing paddock.
But clearly Mike did
more that put a dab of
paint or three on his 6
cylinder power-plant because
each time he
takes to the track he
manages faster and
faster times. Justin
Ladner tried manfully to
lead Alan’s Cortina to
the checkered flag but
the wily Poulter got in
front and at one stage
he was leading two Capris,
the V8 of Ladner
and the V6 of Big Jimmy
Bennett. Sadly coming
into the Superbowl
Jimmy saw red, the red
of Justin’s Capri travelling
slower through the
right hander than he was
managing so to avoid
making contact Jimmy
locks up everything and
took a huge handful of
left hand turn but locked
wheels have very little
traction and absolutely
no turning ability so the
inevitable mating of the
Capris took place with a
gentle kiss to the left
bum cheek by Jimmy’s
right front started a
strange pirouetting of
the crashed Capris
through the Superbowl
with the Ladner V8 coming
off worse of the pair,
battling to get back into
the race but Jimmy wiggle
woggled through the
grass verge and a bit of
kitty litter and went on
his way to join in the fun
again with a slightly damaged
front light and
fender.
Justin’s eyes must have
big as saucers as he
waited for the longest 60
seconds of his life trying
to get his car out of the
line of fire as he was a
complete sitting duck to
anyone who might overcook
the Superbowl
righthander. Thankfully
he got mobile again without
the second lightening
strike.
Yet another Capri, ‘ol
Blue’ of Kevin Taylor also
battled with its handling
as it tyre-squealed it way
around the track but it
certainly brought out the
best in the driver and
great enjoyment to the
n o w c o n s i d e r a b l y
enlarged crowd of spectators.
GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED 2009
Note: All the photos from this article, and many many more are shown in a larger format on the
HRCR website www.historicracing.co.za
Michelle and I had the privilege of attending the Goodwood Festival of Speed
during July this year. We set out from our B&B in Essex at round 4:45am in order
to get to Goodwood as the gates opened at 7:00am. Just as well, because even
though we arrived early, there was just too much to do in one day. Michelle says
I was behaving like a schoolboy, rushing from place to place, and she
commented that I wore a broad grin the whole day.
Run on the estate of Lord March, The Goodwood Festival of Speed is billed as a
Hill Climb, although most cars run the hill more in exhibition mode than at full
race pace. In addition to the hill climb, there is also a forest rally stage, and a
section for the off-road cars (such as the Paris-Dakar).
A wide variety of cars tackle the hill, the oldest being a 1909 Buick, right up to the
2009 Le Mans winning Peugot.
40 th Anniversary of the Porsche 917
Other than the expected
groupings of classic cars,
each year Goodwood
has special themes. For
example, 2009 is the 40 th
anniversary of the
Porsche 917, and
Goodwood responded by
having 12 of these
classics on the day.
These included several
1970 Porsche 917K
917K’s dating back to 1969,
through to the 1500hp CanAm
racer of 1973. This was the
last of the Porsche 917’s, with
the car being so far ahead of
the rest that the rules were
changed to exclude it, ending
the 917’s race career.
The Porsche 917 dates right
to the period where my father first introduced me to racing, and I have many
memories of these awesome cars racing. Included amongst the cars present was
the Piper 917 which won the Kyalami 9-hr.
Although of a later period, also present was the Porsche 956 of Jochen Mass
and Stefan Bellof which led the 1983 Le Mans for a while, and which had
numerous wins including the Silverstone 1000km. This car also competed in the
Kyalami 9-hr.
100 th Anniversary of Bugatti
2009 is also the 100 th anniversary of
Bugatti.
Eight classic Bugattis were present
on the day, the earliest being the
1912 Type 16.
1912 Bugatti Type 16
Of course the ultra-modern and
ultra-powerful Veyron Grand Sport
was also present, and although
capable of 407km/hr, with its W16
engine producing 736kW, it just
doesn’t do it for me. Not that at a
price tag of 1.6 million Euros
(R18million) I’m realistically in the
market for one of these beasts.
75 Years of the Silver Arrows
Although for me of a different era
and one to which I have no
connection, one has to admire the
technical excellence of the Auto
Union and Mercedes-Benz racers
from 1930’s to 1950’s.
Mercedes-Benz W196 1954
Sterling Moss piloted the Mercedes-
Benz W196 from1954, and he clearly
raised the biggest cheer of the day
from the patriotic British crowd.
Tribute to 40 years of Frank Williams in Formula 1
For the Formula 1 fans there was a
surplus hardware on display.
Perhaps the best collection of the
day was a tribute to 40 years of
Frank Williams in Formula 1. As long
as that, it’s hard to believe!
1980 Williams-Cosworth FW07
himself drove this car up the hill. In
all, twelve different Willams F1 cars
were present on the day, including
the 2009 car (which was a static
display as to run a 2009 car on the
hill would have broken F1 rules
which forbids testing).
Perhaps the highlight of the Williams
tribute was Williams FW07 which
Alan Jones used to win his and
Williams first F1 title in 1980. Jones
40 years since Matra won the World Championship
Matra first won the World
Championship in 1969, with Jackie
Stewart in the Matra-Cosworth
MS80. He described this car as the
1969 Matra-Cosworth MS80
best handling Formula 1 car he ever
drove. Stewart drove the earlier MS10
on the day. He won four races in this
chassis, including the 1968 win at the
Nurburgring where he finished over four
minutes ahead of the next car in terrible
weather conditions.
1968 Matra-Cosworth MS10
Some of the other Formula 1 cars on show are included below:
1971 Tyrrell-Cosworth 002 2006 Red Bull-Cosworth STR1
1988 McLaren-Honda MP4 1973 McLaren-Cosworth M23

1985 Lotus-Renault 97T
1990 Leyton House-Judd CG901B
1978 Ferrari 312 T3
1988 Benneton-Ford B188
Le Mans 2009
It is tradition for the Le Mans winner
of the year to display their winning
car. This year Peugot duly obliged
with their Peugot 908 HDI
Also present to excite the British
fans was the Lola-Aston Martin
which came fourth this year.
Forest Rally Stage
In the afternoon we tackled the long walk up the hill to the forest rally stage,
where a good collection of historic and modern rally cars tackled the forest.
These ranged from Ford Escorts Mark 1 and 2, Minis which had tackled the
Monte Carlo rally, to the brute Group 4 4-wheel drive rally cars which were
banned from rallying after a few years because they were “too fast”.
Morris Mini Cooper S 1965
Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600 1971
Ford Escort Mk2 RS1800 1978 Lancia Rallye 037 1983

The most awesome of all on the
rally stage was Sebastian Loeb
driving his 2009 Citroen C4
WRC. He set the quickest time of
the day, with Lord March’s
daughter in the car as his
“navigator” at the time.
Sebatian Loeb Citroen C4 WRC 2009
long walk up the hill.
Its easy to see why Loeb is
acknowledged as one of the best
rally drivers of all times, his car
control while driving on the
slippery white chalk roads was a
sight to behold, and worth the
Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon
Although not car related, for those who had not yet had enough thrills, some
really heavy metal was brought out in the form of the Royal Air Force displaying
their latest fighter jet, the Eurofighter Typhoon. The sound this aircraft makes
with twin jets on full afterburner was unbelievable as the pilot put it through an
awesome aerobatic display.
Eurofighter Typhoon
Highlights of the day for me Very difficult to say, because there was so much to
see and do. I suppose in the end it’s the cars which you remember from your
youth, the Porsche 917s and 956, the Ferrari 512, the Matra driven by Jackie
Stewart, and the many Formula 1’s, which were superbly represented.

Tom Pryce
A truly sad reminder for me was seeing
the Shadow driven by Tom Pryce in 1975.
I was witness to the death of Pryce who
was killed at Kyalami on 5 th March 1977 in
a tragic incident when he hit 19 year old
marshal Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren and
was killed by the fire extinguisher that the
marshal was carrying. The marshal had
been crossing the track in order to assist
Tom Pryce Shadow F1 1975 the Italian driver Renzo Zorzi whose
Shadow car had caught fire. I was a
teenager at the time, and the car which ran at Goodwood was an earlier car, this
still brought back a very vivid memory for me.
