30,000th Transmission
at Willow Springs
In over 45 years of service with JASPER, Dave Ernst
of the Transmission Division has NEVER been in a
JASPER tractor-trailer rig until this past December, just
before Christmas. In fact, he's never been in a semi at
all!
This was Dave’s maiden voyage on a trip from Jasper
to Crawford! Perhaps this could be a career change for
him.
Willow Springs Transmission Division Associates stop
for a picture with their 30,000th remanufactured unit.
The transmission was a Mercedes 722.6 Sprinter
transmission remanufactured on January 28th.
Congratulations to the Willow Transmission Division
on this milestone achievement.

Why the Overtime
This is a very good, and fair, question. Simply put… We Need Inventory!
We ended 4th Quarter of 2009 up, dramatically, over 4th quarter of 2008. Although that is a
“very good thing”, we have lost inventory in almost every product category and we must
rebuild that inventory.
We started ’09 being off, considerably, compared to ’08 and ended the year being down in unit
sales a little over 6%. Unlike the furniture business, most of our customers do not plan on an
engine, transmission or differential replacement. Although many times they know when
things are not working right, most of the time they feel it can make it a little longer, or simply
might be able to fix what is wrong and extend the life of the equipment. So when they
call for a quote and delivery, they usually want it by tomorrow or, at the latest, the following
day. Even though it may not be out of the vehicle, they like to have it on the floor to transfer
various parts and pieces while they do the removal.
Although we are just one month into 2010, we are pleased to say we are up 8.2% in units over
January of last year. Our gasoline engine sales were up 18% over January of ’09. No doubt
the cold weather helped, but all the improvements made in our products, coupled with the
efforts of our sales force, are paying off. When you hear customers say “we can see the
improvements you’re making” you know we are making the proper gains. We are hoping the
deep freeze in the south helps our marine sales this year, as well.
Although we are working a lot of additional overtime, we’ve hired 30 additional people in
manufacturing at our three plants and have another 19 on the hire list. We do need to be
cautious as we don’t feel we’ve seen the storm of 2010. There are some optimistic signs in our
economy and from our customers, especially our fleet accounts. Our caution is based upon
making sure we can sustain the people we bring on. Historically, our best two quarters of the
year are first and second quarter, although ’09 did not hold true. We are pleased to say that
Jasper Innovative Solutions is also up and hearing some great news from the field.
As you can see, we have a lot to be thankful for. Granted, everyone is a little stressed with
the extra overtime, but truly this is better than the stress of wondering whether we have
enough work to work a full schedule each week. With everyone working together we will
come out of this stronger and healthier than before.
January Associate Advisory Committee
Meeting Minutes
Jasper Facility
Topic: Housekeeping Item...
Discussion: Can more regular
housekeeping be done to eliminate
the “sweaty gym” smell in the lower
level hallway
Action: Ionizers have been installed
and carpets are cleaned regularly.
This seems to have solved the
problem.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: LOUD Fire Alarms
Discussion: Can fire alarm testing
be done on weekends
Action: The disruption of the alarm
testing is very minimal during the
year. The decision was made to keep
as is.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Saturday Safety
Discussion: Do we have a safety
presence if an Associate gets hurt
during Saturday production
Action: Any safety-related issues
on Saturdays that go beyond basic
first-aid, as posted in the Safety
Office, should be immediately reported
to Jason Pieper at extension 4811,
Linda Goeppner at extension 4837 or
911 if necessary.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Healthy Food Discounts
Discussion: With the focus on
healthy eating, can JASPER get discounts
from places that offer healthy
options, like Subway or Blimpie
Action: Blimpie offers a 10% discount
to Associates. We have contacted
Subway about a discount, but
have not heard back from them.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Salary Team Leaders
Discussion: Why are some Team
Leaders salary and some not
Action: JASPER’s focus is on the job
duties of the Team Leader, rather than
their title. The job duties are the determining
factor as to whether or not a
Team Leader is salary or hourly. These
job duties differ by Team Leader and
area. Therefore, it is possible to have
two Associates with a Team Leader
title, one hourly and one salary.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: FSA Expenses
Discussion: Can we put FSA expenses
on a credit card, similar to at least one
other area employer
Action: There is an increased cost for
this service, and it would be very
important to Associates to understand
what can and cannot be purchased with
the card. Also, the current Auto
Rollover feature is convenient, used by
many Associates, and is at no additional
charge. This Auto Rollover feature
would not be available if we offered the
card program.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: I Want My TV!
Discussion: Can we install TVs in the
breakroom at lunch to watch the news
Action: It would be very difficult to
come up with one channel everyone can
agree on. Also, a previous survey on
this option indicated most Associates
prefer to hear local news on the radio.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: We Want More Doug
Discussion: It’s great to see Doug in
the plant on holidays and other special
occasions. Seeing him in the plant
more frequently will boost morale
Action: Doug will commit to being in
the plant more frequently.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Lunch Truck
Discussion: What is the status of
the lunch trucks with Rainbow Foods
going out of business
Action: Denu has taken up the route
left by Rainbow Foods. There may be
other local vendors in the near future
who will operate a lunch truck. We
will evaluate when, and if, these
options become available.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Slip Sliding Away...
Discussion: A concern was
expressed that the south parking lot
was still very slick even after being
cleaned off from a recent snow. A
number of Associates almost fell.
Action: Facility Maintenance puts in
many hours to clean these areas as
best they can, based on the circumstances.
Associates should use caution
while walking in these conditions.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Saturday Work I
Discussion: Why do some departments
get off at different times on
Saturdays This is inconvenient if
two or more Associates carpool, but
get off at different times.
Action: Each department schedules
their production times based on customer
needs. Thus, we may have different
departments leaving at different
times.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Saturday Work II
Discussion: How is it handled if
someone leaves early on Saturday
based on riding with someone from
another area whose quit time is
earlier
Action: Each Associate is responsible
to work the scheduled time in
their area. If they need to leave
early, they must discuss the matter
with their Supervisor.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Saturday Work III
Discussion: Why can’t Associates
use a personal day on a Saturday
Action: Per the Associate
Handbook, personal days can only be
used on regularly scheduled workdays.
Paid vacation or personal days
are not intended to be provided at the
overtime (1 1/2) pay rate.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Nicotine Patches
Discussion: Can JASPER offer an
incentive for people who use nicotine
patches and are successful versus
Chantix
Action: The success rate with
Chantix has been much higher than
for those who use patches. If others
are more interested in the patches,
contact the People Department.
There may be additional options
available.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Earlier Arrival
Discussion: Why can’t the doors be
unlocked prior to 5:55am
Action: This schedule was set up to
provide more accountability as to
when people come and go. This issue
will be reviewed with Security.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Reinstatement
Discussion: A question was asked if
someone leaves and comes back, they
would like their tenure reinstated to
receive years of service gifts.
Action: Associates who leave
JASPER and come back will start
over. It’s the Associate who ultimately
makes the choice to leave.
Reinstating years of service gifts
would not be fair to other Associates.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Company Picnic
Discussion: Has there been any
mention about dropping the
Company Picnic
Action: There have been no plans to
drop the Company Picnic.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: I Love Music!
Discussion: Why can’t JASPER
Associates use iPods, mp3 players,
etc., on the production floor
Action: For various reasons, using
these devices on the shop floor causes
a safety hazard.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: New Committee Members
Discussion: Three Associates joined
the Associate Advisory Committee in
February. Garrick Cooper replaces
Brian Voegerl, Gayla Steffe replaces
Phoebe Giesler and Chris Steiner
replaces Jeff Neyenhaus.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Crawford Facility
Topic: Equipment Makeover
Discussion: Associates have asked
if the on-site Fitness Center could be
updated.
Action: Valerie Warren recently
completed an audit of the Fitness
Center equipment and a replacement
elliptical machine has been delivered
for use.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: My Safety Is Fuzzy
Discussion: Associates in the Gas
Division and Distribution areas have
shared that information announced
over the loud speakers is fuzzy and
hard to hear. This includes safety
announcements.
Action: All speakers have been
adjusted.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: White or Black Rags
Discussion: Associates are concerned
about the white shop towels
that are cleaned by Aramark. The
cleaned rags returned to the plant by
Aramark have Loc-Tite caked on
them.
Action: JASPER shared their concerns
with Aramark. They will
inspect their shop towels 100%, until
further notice.
❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Topic: Taxing Christmas Bonus
Discussion: Associates asked why
the 2009 Christmas bonus was
taxed
Action: The Christmas bonus is
taxed every year; however, in past
years the tax has been applied in a
week following the bonus payout. In
2009, the bonus was taxed at the
time it was paid out, due to electronic
processing.
Branch Profile: Hammond
Branch 32 opened in Hammond, Louisiana, on November 1st, 2004. Hammond is a small town about 50 miles
northwest of New Orleans.
Hammond is a quaint town just close enough to have some New Orleans charm, but in a small town setting.
Fresh seafood is easy to find here and Hammond is also known as "The Strawberry Capital of America."
Besides growing Strawberries, there is also an alligator farm about 10 minutes from the branch, where alligators
are raised for their hides and meat. The alligator farmers take the eggs out of the alligators nest from the
local swamps. They hatch and raise the alligators. When the alligators mature they send half to market and
release the other half back to the swamps. Pictured above (left to right) are Darrell Banks, Damien Brumfield and
Here’s One Way to Fix Congress...
A friend sent this along to me. I can't think of a reason
to disagree:
I am sending this to virtually everybody on my e-mail
list and that includes conservatives, liberals, and everybody
in between. Even though we disagree on a number of
issues, I count all of you as friends. My friend and neighbor
wants to promote a "Congressional Reform Act of
2010." It would contain eight provisions, all of which
would probably be strongly endorsed by those who drafted
the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
I know many of you will say, "this is impossible." Let
me remind you, Congress has the lowest approval of any
entity in Government. Now is the time when Americans
will join together to reform Congress - the entity that represents
us.
We need to get a Senator to introduce this bill in the
US Senate and a Representative to introduce a similar bill
in the US House. These people will become American
heros.
Congressional Reform Act of 2010
1. Term Limits: 12 years only, either:
A. Two six-year Senate terms and six two-year House
terms, or...
B. One six-year Senate term and three two-year House
terms.
2. No Tenure/No Pension - A congressman collects a salary
while in office and receives no pay when they are out of
office.
3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social
Security - All funds in the Congressional retirement
fund moves to the Social Security system immediately.
All future funds flow into the Social Security system
and Congress participates with the American people.
4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan,
just as all Americans.
5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower rate of the
Consumer Price Index, or 3%.
6. Congress loses their current health care system and
participates in the same health care system as the
American people.
7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose
on the American people.
8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are
void effective 1/1/11 - The American people did not
make this contract with congressmen; congressmen
made all these contracts for themselves.
Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The
Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serving
their term(s), then going home and back to work.
JASPER Supports
Disability Awareness
Month 2010
March, 2010 is Disability Awareness Month
and Jasper Engines & Transmissions, along
with individuals, businesses and organizations
across the state, will recognize the abilities of
people with disabilities. The Indiana Governor’s
Council for People with Disabilities has
created a new campaign to help educate
Hoosiers about the issues surrounding
disability.
The 2010 Disability Awareness Month campaign
theme is “Free Your Mind.” This year’s
poster features people of different ages and ethnicities
- with and without disabilities - lying on
the grass and gazing at the sky with optimism
and enthusiasm. The text reminds us that by
embracing people’s differences, we open ourselves
to a world of new possibilities. When we
free our minds and see the potential inside
everyone, we’ll expand our horizons - and our
circle of friends. This year’s campaign materials
are sponsored by Duke Energy.
“We feel that the posters are an excellent
way to get the message to more people,” said
Suellen Jackson-Boner, Council executive director.
“The Council is extremely pleased to learn
that JASPER is joining in this effort.”
As in previous years, Disability Awareness
Month, 2010 will be celebrated with community-based
activities carried out by thousands of
advocates and people with disabilities throughout
the state. Activities include mayoral proclamations,
art contests and awareness campaigns
in schools, government agencies and
businesses.
Awareness Month activities, please log onto
