Dear Friends of the BOEC
Dear Friends of the BOEC,
This year marks the 35th Anniversary of the
BOEC! It has been quite a journey, full of
growth and success (with just a few bumps in
the road), and we can be proud of what we’ve
become—one of the premier providers of
outdoor adventure and education for people
with disabilities and special needs. We have
developed world-class programming in adaptive
skiing and riding, rafting, canoeing, climbing,
cycling, ropes course, and many types of
wilderness adventure. Our Internship Program
has been recognized nationally as one of the top
internship opportunities in the country. Our
mission, to expand the potential of people with
disabilities and special needs, is as compelling
and urgent today as it has ever been. We have
built a solid foundation and we strive each year,
each course, to make it better.
We are pleased to report that FY 2010 – 2011
(October, 2010 through September, 2011)
was yet another successful year for the BOEC.
We served over 1,900 participants on nearly
10,000 program days, with people coming from
45 states and 6 countries! We ended the year
in solid financial shape (though a small deficit
was incurred due to the spending of restricted
monies raised in previous years) and this despite
a continued sluggish recovery in the economy.
We were fortunate to have a banner snow year
this year and the ski program enjoyed one of the
best powder seasons ever. As the snows melted,
however, high waters on the rivers presented
us with a number of challenges. Despite these
conditions, we enjoyed a safe and exhilarating
summer season.
Our Board of Trustees has continued to provide
strong support and leadership to the BOEC. This
year we bid farewell to three trustees—Mike
Booth, Chris Carran and Tom McConnell
who served two full terms on the Board. Many
thanks to them for all they have done to help
the success of the BOEC. We also welcomed five
new trustees—Elbert Bivins, Gene Dayton, Scott
Downen, Bill Gillilan and Craig Simson.
Looking forward, we are not anticipating major
growth in the next year. Our focus will be on
retaining key clients (who continue to face
funding challenges), seeking new sources of
funding to enhance our traditional sources and
increasing programs in our shoulder months. We
are anticipating two major capital projects in
the next few years. The Town of Breckenridge
has agreed to sell us our currently leased
administrative building on Wellington Road.
We will seek major funding for this purchase and
renovation. Secondly, Breckenridge Ski Resort
has given approval for the BOEC to expand the
current ski office space in the Maggie building at
the base of Peak 9. The proposed addition would
almost double the current space. Those of you
who have been in the ski office on a busy day
know how important this addition is for us.
The success of the BOEC is due to the heroic
efforts of our staff, interns and volunteers, the
support of our partners and agencies in the
community, and most of all to the brave souls
who come on our programs as students. Many
thanks to you all and we look forward to next
year!
The Year in Highlights
The BOEC delivered yet another successful year in
FY 2010 – 2011. We served 1,939 participants for a
total of 9,613 programming days in our Adaptive
Ski, Wilderness and Internship Programs. We
continue to receive rave reviews from many of our
students and partner agencies as we strive to bring
the best in wilderness education to every course. The
highlights:
Programs
Programs were full this year, with our major challenge
being to manage courses while at capacity levels in
summer and winter. Summer Wilderness Programs
include the following:
• The Children’s Hospital brought groups from their
Sensory Integrative Disorder and Cerebral Palsy
clinics for multi-day courses;
• Two new courses were run for Wounded Warriors
and their families—a 7-day float on the San Juan
River in July and the Breckenridge-based Family
Retreat in August;
• The Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado did six
multiple-day programs this summer, including the
Ruby-Horsethief Colorado River trip and Creative
Minds program in September.
The Adaptive Ski and Ride Program conducted
3,075 lessons, an all-time high. Highlights included:
• For the third time, a group of disadvantaged
youngsters from five countries in Africa skied with
the BOEC in December through the B.O.L.D.
Program (Building on Life’s Disappointments) and
twenty-seven youth had the time of their lives and
spent their first day ever on snow;
• The U.S. Association of Blind Athletes had
another successful program at the BOEC, bringing
eighteen participants in March for three days of
skiing and wilderness programming, including
biathlon training at the Frisco Nordic Center;
• The Children’s Hospital in Denver’s Cleft Palate
Camp brought thirteen kids for three days of skiing
and other activities;
• The BOEC was awarded a grant from the U.S.
Olympic Committee and the DiCola Family
Foundation to strengthen our work with disabled
veterans, bringing sixty vets and active service
military to outdoor activities over the year.
We extend a special thank you to Bob Bond, the
BOEC’s Wilderness Program Director for the past 15
years, who left his position this spring to pursue
other opportunities. We are grateful for the steady
hand and deep expertise that Bob brought to the
BOEC and he will be missed. We are also very
excited to welcome Doug Sandok as the new WPD.
Doug brings more than 20 years of outdoor education
instruction, management and consulting experience
to the BOEC. Doug has already made his own mark
on the program with his many new ideas, energy and
vision.
Volunteers
Over 250 locals again volunteered their time to
support the BOEC this year. Most volunteers worked
as assistant ski instructors, providing much needed
support to our students, many of whom need two to
three staff in order to ski or ride. Others helped with
wilderness summer programming, primarily in
rafting and hand cycling, and others helped on
special events. Many thanks to this devoted crew
who make our program possible.
Fundraising
The BOEC raised over $644,000 from our generous
supporters, nearly a 20% increase from last year!
Most of these funds came from foundations and
individuals, with a substantial increase in restricted
donations. We raised nearly $170,000 for the
scholarship fund and awarded over $153,000 to
individuals in need of support. A special thanks to
the Denver Active 20-30 Foundation and the
Colorado Rockies Fund whose $40,000 donation is
the centerpiece of our scholarship program.
Special Events
It was a great year for special events, with $103,000
raised and a net income of over $80,000 (this
includes both event revenues and related donations).
These events not only raise much needed support for
operations and scholarships, but also raise awareness
of the BOEC in our community. Events included:
• The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour
features the best in outdoor-oriented films from
around the world. This was our second year
hosting the festival and the house was again sold
out.
• The Tee it Up for Wounded Warriors and KAC
Golf Scramble, another second-time event, hosted
109 golfers and several new sponsors to raise funds
for the Keystone Adaptive Center and Wounded
Warrior programs.
• The 9th Annual Breckebeiner Ski-a-thon, hosted
by Gene and Therese Dayton, owners of the the
Breckenridge Nordic Center, brought over 200
participants to ski or snowshoe for the BOEC
“You all make it
possible for people
like me to feel
great about themselves.”
— Cassandra
Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center
Scholarship Fund. It is also one of the best
parties in the spring in Summit County!
• Cinco de Mayo, hosted by the Mi Casa
Restaurant in Breckenridge, brought community
locals together for great food, live music and a
silent auction, with all proceeds coming to the
BOEC’s Willie Whalen Fund.
• Our annual reception at Keystone to raise money
and awareness for our Keystone Adaptive Center
was also a success with increased numbers.
In addition, friends and supporters held their own
events to benefit the BOEC, including the Luke
“Milhouse” Memorial Run by the Oldenburg
Family, “Deck the Hulls” party in Chicago by
Kevin and Kirsten Hull, the North Face Speaker
Series in Breckenridge and Tim Casey and Larry
Crispell’s “ALS Vertical Challenge.”
Thank you to all the participants, donors and
sponsors who made our events so successful. We
also celebrate the third anniversary of our
Development Director, Marci Sloan, whose
tireless efforts have been the hallmark of our
events. She brought us the Banff festival, the golf
event (she is an avid golfer) and has grown all
events to historic levels. All of this on top of
grantwriting and general fundraising.
“The first year I did not want to go. I
thought it would be lame and the kids
would be really weird, but I went.
And I found out the kids were just
like me. It was so fun; I had such a
great time…it was the best week of my
life…”
