Go to our www.outwell.com website and fi nd the “search for tent” function,
then simply click through.
Meanwhile, here are some simple tips to get you started:
1. Size matters. Consider how much space you want and how
many people you are catering for. But also bear in mind pitch
sizes on campsites and how much room you have not
just for your tent but all other gear in your car’s boot!
2. Consider also how many rooms you want, as well
as the actual layout.
3. Don’t forget to take into account other key factors such
as weight and pack size.
4. How easy is it to put up an Outwell tent? It’s simple.
And you know what? The more you use it,
the easier it gets!
BETTER THAN EVER
Easier to pitch. Easier to look after. More practical. And more fun. If you
think current tents are like the ones you camped in decades ago, think
again. Today’s tents are a world away from those of yesteryear. That’s
thanks to improved materials and, quite simply, better design. There’s more
choice today, too. And they’re defi nitely more luxurious than ever.
Today, there are three key tent types:
1. Tunnel. Designed to cope with all weather conditions. Alloy or steel poles make for
a more rugged construction, while our Durawrap and Duratec poles can be lighter
overall and keep pack size to a minimum.
2. Dome. Crossover poles help give these tents their distinctive shape, and they’re easier
to manoeuvre into exactly the right position when you’re setting up.
3. Vis-a-vis. Here, two rooms oppose each other across the entranceway.
Check out also our Extensions, Awnings, Utility Tents, Sliding Canopies
and Tarps, if you want extra space on-site.
The AvantGarde Collection is
announced, and instantly hailed
as the most stylish camping
gear ever
ANNOUNCING AVANTGARDE
– MODERN AND SOPHISTICATED
Outwell has always been at the forefront of camping design – and our
all-new AvantGarde collection just proves it. With AvantGarde, our
designers set out to give a whole new home away from home appeal to
camping. Hence a look that takes its cues from summer grass blowing in
a breeze, with contemporary Outwell Mocca exteriors and interiors
featuring stylish stripes.
AvantGarde tents comprise three new line-ups – Ohio, Maryland and Arkansas – each
with the option to add a front awning that can be fully closed and has its own detachable
groundsheet.
AvantGarde accessories are just as exciting. Available with the same contemporary
colour styling, the AvantGarde Collection is completed with down-fi lled sleeping bags,
windscreen, carpet, furniture, fl ocks, sleeping mats and melamine tableware. As we say,
it will make our camping feel like home away from home.
It’s not just about looking good. AvantGarde introduces a whole new sense of style.
Just think of Mocca as the new black!
Add a front awning to your new AvantGarde tent and you open up a whole new, full-sized shelter
area that can act as a lovely sun trap on summer days and can be fully closed at night.
Making friends is easy
people they’ve met on site
Even mum relaxes
Joanne unwinds, and tries out the
comfort of her Folding Chair
OUTWELL HAVE ROOM FOR EVERYONE
Here come the boys
The Mulhollands love camping, and they
love their Outwell camping gear
MEET THE MULHOLLANDS
Here’s a family that really know how to enjoy camping. The Mulhollands from Gateshead,
Tyne and Wear, are: Dad Reuben, Mum Joanne and their sons Jack and Luke.
Reuben reckons they have some 30 key Outwell products: “We had so much gear we had
to buy a trailer to tow behind our Renault Scenic. “We swear by our coolbox, too. In the
Scenic, we take the middle seat out at the back and it fi ts in there. It means we can have
fresh, chilled food for the journey and when we we’re on site, too.”
As you’d expect, they’re big fans of Outwell’s family gear. As Reuben puts it: “It’s like home
away from home. We go camping to relax, go for walks, explore the surrounding countryside.
Our boys are typical, they like playing football and just getting out. Camping is great
for getting them away from the Wii and the Xbox, and they make friends so easily.”
Their main holiday in 2008 was at Castle Bay, Portpatrick, near Stranraer in Scotland. It’s
best known as the most westerly part of Scotland. Reuben adds: “I like Scotland and the
Lake District. We’re always looking for sites that have something for the children to do.”
He has some sound advice to others thinking of going camping for the fi rst time. “A lot of
people sort of get carried away buying loads of stuff . Ideally, it’s best to borrow a tent fi rst
and get the owners to show you how to pitch it properly. Just keep it simple. If you know
you’re going to enjoy camping, that’s the time to go out and buy a quality tent that suits
your needs.
There’s even more good news. By the time you read this, we trust there will be an addition
to the Mulholland family. Luke says he would quite like another brother, as he’ll no longer
be the youngest. Jack wants a sister, so his mum can take her shopping instead of him!
One thing’s for sure, they’ll continue to enjoy their camping.
family’s adventures at www.outwell.com.
Meanwhile, these are just some of the
products they’ve been using, plus their
verdicts:
Hartford L tent from the DeLuxe collection,
with additional Front Extension,
Footprint and Carpet.
“Could sleep up to six, but Outwell sensibly
advise it’s more comfortable for four. It’s
easy to erect thanks to colour-coding, and
the sewn-in groundsheet is one of its biggest
pluses. It’s easy to pack away and all
fi ts into one bag, yet it’s spacious with a
large living area in the middle. It really stood
up to the elements, even in severe weather.
The Carpet was one of our favourite items.
And the Footprint is ideal for keeping the
groundsheet clean, for insulation, and it’s a
great help when pitching to make sure you
have the tent in the right place and the right
shape.”
Kids Room
“Defi nitely Jack and Luke’s favourite. They
loved it.”
Haiti Wardrobe
“It was a good storage unit because it had
two shelves plus a solid shelf on top, where
you can put things like kettles, radios etc.”
Kids DINO Explorer sleeping bags and
self-infl ating mats, plus head torches.
“Again, all big favourites with Jack and Luke.
The self-infl ating mats seemed to have that
bit more cushioning than others. The head
torches were really helpful when it came to
nipping out to go to the loo in the night.”
Arm Chair Deluxe
“You don’t know until you try them, but
these are much more comfortble than standard
folding chairs. The high backs make a
real difference.”
Tauri electric tent light
“This is very stylish, but it was also very
useful.”
Contour 2300 and Camper Lite sleeping
bags
“We preferred these because they’re rectangular.”
Challenge Daypack
“Mine’s in black and I (Reuben) use it all the
time.”
How’s this for versatility?
THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT!
When it comes to family camping, Outwell rules. Thanks to our two fantasy
camping characters – FLOWIES Rose and DINO Explorer – the world of camping
can truly come alive for girls and boys respectively.
Our Kids Room was introduced last season and has proved an instant hit – and not just
with children. This is a very special inner tent designed to appeal to children’s imaginations
– complete with its own styling, kids-only entrance, on-ur-back basketball and lower ceiling
with stars that come out at night.
Our new complement to Kids Room is the Kids House and Tunnel. These can
be used together for extra fun away from the family tent or indeed at home.
Plus, they can be used with the Kids Room – including attaching the tunnel
to the children’s entrance for an extra special way in.
The FLOWIES Rose and DINO Explorer
designer product ranges have been
extended, too. There are now Folding
Tables to add to the original line-up of
a wide variety of child-friendly gear
– sleeping bags and mats, bags, chairs
and more. DINO Explorer and FLOWIES
Rose gear also extends to torches,
headlamps, binoculars and fl asks.
OUTWELL RISOTTO
This recipe’s so easy even the kids could do it! Serves a family of
four. Feel free to add your own choice of meat plus a salad.
Ingredients
One onion - chopped
Olive oil
Selection of red, green, yellow peppers - chopped
One tin of chopped tomatoes
125g (4oz) risotto rice (but any rice will do)
Seasoning to suit
This is a simple, one-ring meal - so you could make it using
Outwell’s Portable Gas Stove! Using a medium heat and an Outwell
1.5 litre saucepan, heat the olive oil and add the chopped onion.
Cook until just browning, then stir in the peppers and fry for a
further 3-5 minutes. Add the rice and again stir well to ensure
everything gets a good coating of olive oil. Now add the tin of
chopped tomatoes and any seasoning you want (e.g. mixed herbs,
salt, pepper). Turn up the heat and bring to boiling. Now put the
lid on the pan and turn the heat right down so that it’s simmering.
Stir occasionally and add a drop of water if necessary. Keep an
eye on how the rice is cooking, but the ideal is that the rice takes
up nearly all of the liquid as it cooks - which should take 10-15
minutes.
Serve in Outwell’s rice bowls from the AvantGarde collection.
PS. Add a dash of Tabasco chilli pepper sauce just before serving if
you really want to spice things up!
DIFFICULT? NOT AT ALL!
LET’S EAT OUT
AVANTGARDE BURGERS DINO’S CORNED BEEF HASH
FOOD TIPS
Home-made burgers taste so much better than anything you can
get from the shops – and they’re so easy to make
Ingredients
500g mince (not too lean)
One onion – fi nely chopped
Egg and/or grated cheese (optional)
Seasoning to suit
Our new Cahors Portable Grill and Gap Grill Tools are idea for
making the best of your burgers. Just combine all the ingredients
by hand and press into burger shapes. Cook on the Grill,
keeping turning to a minimum. Serve with bread rolls, salad and
accompaniments of your choice.
Thanks to Outwell, eating outdoors has never been so much
fun. And we can make it easier for you, too. New products
for this season include the Dauphin Kitchen Worktable,
which includes sunken water basin, and a portable grill with
separate tool set. Plus, we have a couple of recipes for you.
Use a saucepan and a frying pan for this one, but you still only
need one ring. It’s an old camping favourite
Ingredients
One onion - chopped
25-50g (1-2oz) butter, plus a little cooking oil (any variety, to stop
the butter from burning)
One tin of corned beef
125g (4oz) risotto rice (but any rice will do)
1kg (2.2lb) potatoes for boiling and mashing
Seasoning to suit
A little milk (optional
Peel the potatoes and cut them fairly small so as they cook quicker.
Add them to boiling water and cook until soft. Drain and mash,
but leave some potato pieces if you like. Using the frying pan on
a medium heat, add the butter and oil, then fry the onions until
they’re just starting to brown. Chop the corned beef into small
chunks, then add to the onion, stirring in for a few minutes. Turn
the ring down to its lowest setting. Now add the mashed potato
and mix everything together well, with the milk plus seasoning.
Pat it all fl at in the pan and continue to cook until the base is just
starting to brown.
• Always cook outside your tent
• Keep a fi re extinguisher and bucket of water handy,
for emergencies
CAMP MAGAZINE 40-41 WWW.OUTWELL.COM
• Always keep raw meat and fi sh away separate to other foodstuff
s. Use an Outwell coolbox to keep essential foods cool
• When cooking, keep turning to a minimum and always
check food is cooked all the way through
• Use an Outwell Windscreen or Sliding Canopy for protection
from any breezes
EASY DOES IT
With Outwell camping has never been
so easy… or so stylish. Nevertheless,
see our special tips on these pitches and
you’ll make life even easier.
PITCHING TIPS LOOKING AFTER YOUR OUTWELL TENT
• Practise putting up your tent before you go away. Regard this
as an essential - it’s far better you learn about putting your tent
up and packing it away initially from the comfort of your own
home.
• Make sure your tent is well ventilated. Often, people think
their tent is leaking whereas in fact what they’ve spotted is
condensation, due to lack of air circulation. Especially, try and
keep your tent well ventilated at night.
• Try not to touch the inside of your fl ysheet (i.e. the outer wall
of your tent), as this can cause rainwater to leak through.
• Avoid using sprays such as insecticides inside any tent. This
applies to ordinary household items like hairsprays, too.
• When striking camp (i.e. taking down your tent), try and
ensure it’s as dry as possible. If it’s not completely dry, take it
out again when you get it home and let it fully air before packing
it away. This will help prevent mildew and, in worst cases,
material rotting.
• Consider using rock pegs or U-pegs if you think the ground
may be hard or the weather’s going to be especially windy.
• We do not recommend that you cook within any synthetic
fabric tents. But, if this is necessary, please ensure cooking
equipment is kept away from tent sides and there is
continuous ventilation.
• Do not allow children to play with or near lighted appliances.
• Do not set up your tent completely taut, or it will not be able
to adapt to varying wind and weather.
• If strong winds are expected, replace normal tent pegs with
storm pegs. Consider also our new Ratchet Tie Down for
extreme conditions.
• Use a camping mallet to secure pegs.
• The fl ysheet is made of water-repellent material. To prevent
water seeping through, avoid touching the inside surface in
rainy weather.
• Remove dirt from your tent with a soft sponge and clean, pure water.
Never wash your tent in a washing machine, and never have it
dry-cleaned.
• Note that the tape over seams can work loose with repeated use. Tape
may even come off after prolonged exposure to sun. You can repair this
by removing loose tape and using a seam sealer and waterproof spray to
re-seal.
• Accidents can happen so, as well as a fi rst aid kit for the family, carry
an emergency kit for your tent. Include items like spare pole sections,
guyline, pegs and a whole Outwell repair kit.
• Always pack it up dry. If that’s not possible, unpack it and dry it fully just
as soon as possible.
