A Word from Pastor Mark
Dear Friends at Peace,
Our 40 day journey is fast coming
to an end. Our Lenten tithe is
about to culminate in the greatest
story of personal sacrifice that redefines
giving. Those of us who
have been taking the road less traveled
by have been challenged and
uplifted by words of our Lord that
are, at times, contrary to our expectations
from a human point of
view. We have entered the valleys
of Lent during our mid-week gatherings
as God’s people. Perhaps it
is fitting that we enter Holy Week
this year on April 1. What an apt
reminder of St. Paul’s words that
the cross is foolishness to Gentiles
and a stumbling block to Jews, but
to those who are being saved, it is
the power of God. I invite you to
join me now in following our Lord
to Jerusalem, where the divine
drama will truly unfold in disturbing
yet life-changing ways. The road
leading to Jerusalem is one of glory.
The road leading to Golgotha is
one of sorrow.
Many of you have seen the Mel
APRIL 2007
Gibson film, “The Passion of the
Christ.” If you haven’t actually witnessed
it, you have certainly heard
about the violence it portrays.
Those that haven’t seen the movie
can always “read the book.” It
does not take too much imagination
to conclude that our Lord Jesus
suffered a painful death (thus
the word, “passion,” from the
Greek, “pathos” which means,
“suffering.”) God’s son suffered on
our behalf so that we might be
spared the pain of eternal separation
from God. Even though it appears
“bad,” that’s why this day is
called, “Good Friday.”
"It is finished," Jesus says from
the cross, according to St. John’s
APRIL 2007 THE WORDS OF PEACE Page 2 of 24
(Continued from page 1)
“...Martin Luther would remind us,
that the power of Easter is not only
that God raised Jesus from the dead,
but that he raised him from the
dead for you and for a world broken
by sin and in need of healing.”
account. Think of this not as a cry of despair, but
one of triumph. In some way all of the words from
the cross relate to this statement, this pronouncement.
Of all the ways in which the four evangelists
portray Jesus on the cross, John in particular presents
him as reigning from the tree. Again, the apparent
foolishness of God’s son yielding to the
forces of injustice is really the power of God putting
all things under his feet, even death itself.
Like all the events of his life, the death of Jesus
stands as our judgment and salvation. We can respond
to it like curious tourists, who are satisfied
by a mere peek now and then, perhaps looking for
a souvenir. Or we can recognize the dying one as
someone we love. His arms, stretched wide on the
cross, still embrace us, his loved ones. In that embrace
we find our own pain surrounded by God's
love; united with the world's pain and healed because
Christ first loved us and embraced our pain.
And, of course, the road ends at the tomb. But
the message on Sunday morning at early dawn, that
was as understated as it was profound, continues
to pulse throughout the world to this day, “The
one whom you seek is not here. He has been
raised from the dead.” How does one portray
emptiness as a symbol From the earliest days of
the church on, there has been really only one re-
sponse that even begins to convey the magnitude
of Easter, and that is, “Alleluia!” Yes, the word we
have been denying ourselves for 40 days is the only
word that now makes sense, “Christ is risen. He is
risen indeed. Alleluia!”
Lent was a fast of 40 days, but Easter is a feast
lasting 50 days. Nearly 1/7 of our year will be
spent in rejoicing in the good news that God raised
Jesus from the dead for us and our broken world.
We will hear and incorporate into our lives, individually
and as a congregation, the many responses
to the resurrection during these full 50 days. We
remember, as Martin Luther would remind us, that
the power of Easter is not only that God raised
Jesus from the dead, but that he raised him from
the dead for you and for a world broken by sin and
in need of healing. Alleluia!
Thank you, all of you, who have been sharing
your gifts with and through the work of the
church. We thank God for our stewardship program
where we allowed God’s spirit to help us discern
our gifts and God’s call for us to use them.
We are so grateful for our many new members
who affirmed their baptism on March 25, and committed
themselves to identify with the family of
faith known as Peace Lutheran Church. The Holy
Spirit has been at work through our leaders, and
has been directing the call process through the diligent
efforts of the call committee and our Metropolitan
DC Synod. During the Easter season we
still have much work to do. We will be gathering
as a congregation to decide some very important
issues regarding the shape of our ministry both
within the congregation and through the synod assembly
this summer. Let us pray that we approach
all our tasks with transformed hearts and resur-
On a personal note, thank you so much for
your kind words and support that you have shown
for my family during Christine’s deployment to
Iraq. Your outpouring of concern for her, those
whom she serves inside “the wire,” as well as the
Iraqi children outside the installation perimeter, is
overwhelming. I brag about you all to the folks
that I work with at my “day job.” I think of Paul’s
words, “Outdo one another in love.” Peace Lutheran
been blessed by you. Thank you for your love as I
await the return of my favorite person in the
world.
Join in the passion drama. I invite you to walk
A Word from Pastor Abebe
Word of God
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Christianity is a religion (if it is a religion) of Words.
We believe that God had spoken and is still speaking
and we have to listen to His words; to live by His
words. “Open your mouth wide and I will fill it” says
God (Psalms 81:106) Open your mouth Is it food
YES!
Christianity depends on the word of God. It is impossible
to communicate Christianity without explaining
such words as sin, crucifixion, justified, holy, etc. In
the Christian faith words and belief are closely associated.
Jesus said to His disciples: “The Words I have spoken
to you are spirit and they are life.” (John 6:63) which
“Have you not known Have you not
heard The everlasting God, the Lord,
the Creator of the Ends of the Earth…
He gives power to the weak… but
those who wait on the Lord shall renew
their strength… they shall walk and
not faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31)
implies that Jesus had been sent not to renovate the life
we have but to give us a new life, different kind of life,
a force in the world. This is one of the reasons why
Christians are expected to memorize scriptures, speak
(what they have memorized to themselves and others)
meditate, pray scriptures and remind each other of
scriptures.
When I first went to an evangelical church (SIM) the
missionaries asked me to memorize scriptures and
promised me that for each ten versus I memorized they
would reward me with something. I had to memorize
one hundred verses of scripture to win a Bible. I had
received an mirror, pencil and pencil sharpener (which
I had never seen before) and many good gifts. Before I
memorized the hundred verses of scripture and received
my first Bible, I received Jesus as my Savior and
Lord. But when I was in tenth grade I won a scripture
contest and received my first Bible.
Jesus said to the Sadducees: “is not this the reason you
are Wrong, that you know neither the scripture not the
power of God.” (Mark 12:24a)
Paul said: “We speak of these things (what no eye had
seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him) in
Words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the
Spirit interpreting spiritual things to those who are
spiritual.”
A long time ago I heard an old preacher say: “Aim
high, draw nigh.” One meaning of draw is to breathe
in. To read scripture and meditate the word of God is
to draw upon that higher power. This power is constantly
available for those who open their mouths. It is
there for anybody under any circumstances or conditions.
I believe that the word of God casts out fear,
hate, sickness, weakness, moral defeat, etc. People who
do not read scripture and use scripture verse for their
problems do not know what they are missing.
A Word from Pastor Nana
Sisters and brothers!
Grace, love and peace from God our Father and our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
Lent is a season when we should remind ourselves of
God’s provisions of escape that we will be able to
stand the challenges of our time.
What does God’s provision of escape teach us about
his character God opens escape routes to show us his
love. The greatest escape route God has given to mankind
is the provision to avoid going to hell. John 3:16
says: “…for God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish but have everlasting life. He that believeth
on him is not condemned, but he that believeth
not is condemned already because he has not believed
in the name of the only begotten son of God.”
Trust the Lord and remember that other
Christians all around the world are going
through these sufferings too.
This is a time to search our heart to find out whether
we have accepted God’s free offer of salvation through
Jesus Christ. John 1:12 says: “...but as many as received
him (Jesus) to them he gave power to become the children
of God, even to them that believe on his name. It
is by grace we are saved through faith not of work lest
any one should boast.”
God opens escape routes to show us he cares. Paul
states in 1 Corinthians. 10:13 “..there hath no temptation
taken you but such as is common to all, but God
is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above
that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make
a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Paul, living in a culture filled with moral depravity and
pressures, gave strong encouragement to the Corinthians
and us about temptation. He said the wrong
desires and temptations happen to everyone so we
should not feel we have been singled out. Peter also
said in 1 Peter 5:9 “Stand firm when he (Satan) attacks.
Trust the Lord and remember that other Christians
all around the world are going through these sufferings
too. Others have resisted temptation and so we
can, with God, have help. God helps us resist temptation
by making us recognize those people and situations
that give us trouble. We are also to run away
from anything we know is wrong and choose to do
only what is right. 2 Timothy 2:22 say “run from anything
that gives you the evil thoughts that young people
often have, but stay close to anything that makes
you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy
the companionship of those who love the Lord and
have pure hearts”. Yes we are to seek friends who love
God and offer help when we are tempted. The greatest
friend we can have is the Lord Jesus. When we call on
him in our time of trouble he will neither fail nor forsake
us.
God opens escape routes to show us his power. The
people of Israel have left Egypt by the demonstration
God, the Lord, the Creator of the Ends of the
Earth… He gives power to the weak… but those who
wait on the Lord shall renew their strength… they
shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31)
If we have a God who cares about us (we do believe
don’t we) it would be wise to take a look at what He
says about the connection between a healthy spirit and
a health living.
God’s word builds faith: “According to your faith be it
unto you” is a basic law of successful living.
of the power of God. They were at the shore of the
Red Sea. The Egyptians chased them. There were
mountains on their left and right, it looked as if they
were trapped. They were fearful and despairing. But
Moses encouraged them to watch the wonderful way
God would rescue them. Exodus 14:13 says, but
Moses told the people “don’t be afraid just stand
where you are and watch the Lord rescue you”. The
Egyptians that were there that day would never be seen
again. Moses had a positive attitude and called on God
to intervene. We may not be chased by an army, but
we may still feel trapped. Instead of giving into despair
we should adopt Moses’ attitude to stand firm and
watch the incredible rescue of God.
The greatest friend we can have is the Lord
Jesus. When we call on him in our time of
trouble he will neither fail nor forsake us.
As long as I live I do not stop reading my Bible, I will
not also stop nagging every believer to read, read, and
read.
May God bless you!
Be at Peace,
Pastor Abebe
There was no apparent way of escape, but the Lord
opened up a dry path through the sea. Sometimes we
may find ourselves caught in a problem and may see no
way out. But we should not panic. God can open up a
way. 2 Chronicles 16:9 says “for the eyes of the Lord
search back and forth across the whole earth, looking
for people whose hearts are perfect toward him so that
he can show his great power in helping them.
A Word from Sue Clark, Council President
News of this and that from Sue Clark
As most of you know, Linda Pipper has moved from her
condo to an assisted living facility. She had quite a number
of items that now need to be sold to help her financial
situation. While Peace’s Facilities Use Policy does
not permit members to hold yard sales on Peace property
for personal gain, the Council reviewed the situation
and decided there is a difference between a sale
for personal gain and one held on the basis of need, and
Council approved the application. The Yard Sale is
scheduled for April14, 2007.
While there are many items from Linda’s condo to be
sold, contributions from Peace members are most welcome.
If you wish to make a donation, the sale will include
the usual items: clothing, household appliances
and cookware, linens, Christmas decorations, etc. In
addition, there will be some valuable pieces: good china,
silver coffee set, candle holders. Because of these
items, we will set aside a special boutique section. Only
children’s books, please, the sorting and pricing of
books is too time consuming.
Items may be dropped of beginning Thurs., April 12,
noon until 5 p.m. and 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. and also on
Friday, from 10:00 until 5 and from 6:30 until 9:00.
Kay Dameron, Peace’s yard sale guru, will be coordinating
the volunteers. Please call Kay to offer your help.
April 14th
will also be an Outdoor Work Day!
Yes, it is that time of year, time to make our grounds
look beautiful. Much has been accomplished during the
past several years. Did you know that more than 35
trees have been planted on our property Some planting
is a response to Fairfax County requirements; all
planting is a response to God’s call for good stewardship
of the earth.
On April 14, beginning at 8:30 a.m. tasks will be assigned
to all who come to help. Bring work gloves,
pruners, weeding tools, trowels, etc. Please label your
tools.
Remember what Paul said: There are varieties of gifts,
but the same Spirit, and there are varieties of services,
but the same Lord, and there are varieties of activities,
but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit
for the common good. I Corinthians 12:4-7. Surely
many of us will be inspired to come and share out talents
for the common good on April 14 th .
colonized by the British for 100 years.
⇒ Ghana is blessed to have never had a Civil
⇒ The population is 16 million.
⇒ Ghana is boarded on the north by Burkina
⇒ Ghana was formerly known as the Gold
A few schools teach Latin and Greek. There
are about 30 local languages.
⇒ There are teacher training, secondary, medical,
nursing, and technical schools, and universities
in the country.
⇒ Christianity was brought to Ghana by sailors
From Pastor Nana’s Adult Forum—continued
led to the alienation of many Christians from their
traditional beliefs in Ghanaian traditional religion.
However, this brought other changes since traditional
religions are very closely related to the kinship
systems, the authority structure, and the political
organization of societies. Beliefs in the ancestors
no more found favor with the converts.
To accelerate the pace of spreading the Christian
gospel, the missionaries helped in the study of
Ghanaian culture and the local languages. The ultimate
aim was to communicate with a wider population
on the tenants of Christian religion. Hence,
apart from translating the Bible into the local languages,
the literature, and encouraged the use of
local languages as medium of instruction in schools,
commerce, and in churches. The missionaries also
involved themselves in other beneficial activities
such as functional literacy, welfare work, and social
services.
Among the economic activities introduced
by the missionaries were commercial importing
and the exporting of cash crops and other raw materials
such as cocoa, coffee, timber, and minerals.
In addition, large-scale businesses like the Volta
Aluminum Company were established in Ghana,
manned by Americans. Formal and Western styles
of conducting business and white collar jobs were
required of the local people who worked in these
establishments. For a majority of the time, those
indigenous people who had received formal education
found themselves in the working environment
of the Western style.
March 12, 2007
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Call Committee would like to take this opportunity to update everyone on our progress as we continue our search for a new senior
pastor for Peace Church. Our committee first met in the fall of 2006. One of our first steps was to schedule an appointment with
Bishop Schneider and a representative of the synod office. This meeting took place on November 14, 2006, with the bishop providing
guidance for us to follow as we go through the process of selecting our new pastor. He noted there are three major steps in selecting
our new pastor: first, the preparation of a comprehensive packet of information describing Peace Church; next, the interview process;
and finally, the decision-making process.
Step one has been completed. The comprehensive packet of information describing Peace Church and its members includes our
church history, financials, a description of our ministries, photographs and a profile of our church members. Our completed packet was
presented to and accepted by Bishop Schneider’s office in February 2007, along with a list of several candidate names suggested by
Peace members. This information serves as a guideline for the bishop’s office in recommending candidates, and in addition, is provided
by the Bishop’s office to potential candidates to ascertain their interest in being considered for our senior pastor position. The
membership profile was developed by conducting two written surveys which were distributed to members in November and December
2006. The first survey was distributed by mail and made available in the church narthex and Fellowship Hall. The second was a snapshot
survey conducted at our four worship services on the weekend of December 9 and 10, 2006. The surveys were instrumental in
acquiring data to reflect a profile of our membership. We express our gratitude to everyone who participated in completing the surveys.
The Call Committee’s next step will be interviewing candidates which will begin soon. We share your desire to keep the process moving
in a timely and meaningful manner. The process may not move as quickly as we would like, however, we are confident that our
search will identify strong candidates resulting in the selection of our new senior pastor.
This is a challenging and exciting year for our church family as Peace celebrates its 50 th anniversary! Thank you for your support, encouragement
and prayers.
In Christ,
Sunday School
The Sunday School will
complete its study of Lent
with a special intergenerational
session on April 1 st
where we will weave crosses out of palms for Palm
Sunday.
Please note that there will be no Sunday School on
Easter Sunday, April 8 th . Please join us after the 10:30
service on Easter for the annual Easter egg hunt. If
your child will be participating in the egg hunt, please
bring a minimum of six plastic eggs per child (no real
eggs, please!) filled with candy. Eggs should be brought
to the kitchen before the 10:30 service.
On April 15 th , the Sunday School will study Easter.
Each class will make a stepping stone for the butterfly
garden. On April 22 nd , children should come to Sunday
School in clothes that they can get dirty in, as they will
place their stepping stones in the butterfly garden and
plant zinnias.
The Sunday School will return to its parables study on
April 29. The theme for this unit will be “One Coin
and Two Sons.” Special cooking and science projects,
crafts, and games will be planned to convey the meaning
of the parable to the kids.
As a reminder, Sunday School for children age 3 years
through 6 th grade is from 9:00 – 10:15 a.m., starting
with music in the fellowship hall. Come join us! It’s
never too late to register children, or to get involved in
sharing God’s word.
April’s special offering is for the Lutheran
Camps in our Synod, Mar-Lu-Ridge and Camp
Caroline Furnace. Many of us remember the fun of
camping when we were children. This experience can
be an important aid in grounding children in their faith
and raising faithful adults. Camping can also be a time
to hear God’s call, perhaps to the ordained ministry!
This year Camp Caroline Furnace is celebrating its 50 th
year. Please help support this important ministry.
March’s special offering was for Rebuilding Together.
There is a sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall to volunteer
your time on April 28 to help renovate a home in our
area. Join us in helping a family to maintain and keep its
house.
The February special offering for ACCA raised $920.
Thank you for your generosity!
Several small multicultural Bible study groups will be organized during the next few months. This is your chance to join! You will meet with
the same group of teens and adults for five sessions to share and listen to each other's thoughts on Bible texts. What will you get out of it
ο You will learn more from the Bible and apply what you learn
ο You will help Peace Lutheran increase understanding between members with different backgrounds
ο You will pray for others and they will pray for you
ο You will help the leader, Pastor Nancy Lund, learn how to use Bible study to help diverse churches and successfully complete her Doctor of
Ministry degree
Bible study groups will meet at times that work well for diverse groups of 6 to 8 persons. Each meeting may last as long as two hours. Groups
may occasionally skip a week but for the most part will meet weekly for 5 weeks. If you have questions, please talk to Nancy Lund or call her at
What: “SUMMER ENRICHMENT MONTH” at our
Village of Hope School in Haiti.
Our students there have little or no opportunity
to experience many of the life-enriching things
we take for granted for our children here in
the USA – e.g., art classes, dancing, music lessons,
craft skills, etc. “Summer enrichment
month” is designed to help fill this void. But
help is needed!!
Who:
Anyone who has something special to share
with the children – art, music, drama, woodworking,
first aid, dance, weaving, drafting,
English teaching, or whatever! – to serve as
volunteers in this effort. Language is no barrier;
interpreters will be provided.
When: The month of July. (Volunteering for the
whole month is ideal, but any
reasonable amount of time will be accepted.
The exact dates are the four weeks beginning
July 2 and ending July 30, with travel before
and after those dates.
Costs We would hope that congregations would
sponsor volunteers who cannot pay their own
way -- $30 a day for room, board, local travel
and insurance (about $800 for 4 weeks) plus
travel to and from Haiti. Housing is at Hope
House – air conditioned sleeping rooms, hot
water, electricity.
A unique service opportunity for retired persons, school
teachers with summer time available, young
people looking for a meaningful summer activity.
Passport needed. No shots or immunizations required; tetanus
advisable.
Consult personal physician for advice.
Sharing God-given skills and abilities.
Rich rewards that more than off-set any sacrifices
being made.
Hello Everyone!
Remember you are dust….
Just a few weeks ago on Ash Wednesday, we spoke the
words, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return”
as the ashes cross was made upon our foreheads to remind
us of the frailty of our lives and our dependence upon God as
we began our Lenten journey.
Who would have guessed how literal those words would become
for us here in Iraq A week ago we experienced one of
the worst dust storms in recent years. This was confirmed by
two soldiers who attend my Liturgical Service on Sunday who
have been here in Iraq over a year!
I don’t know if I can convey just how bad it was…. It began as
a clear, sunny Thursday and then the winds began in the afternoon.
By evening, Ch Torres and I were doing some night
visitation to our PowerPro (Power Production – the guys that
run the power
generators) shop and we noticed the dust stirring up.
By the time we ended our visits, the winds were so strong, we
were practically getting blown off our feet and visibility was
about 12 feet. Before I retired for the night, the visibility was
about 4 feet in front of my face as I raced back to my quarters
from the “Cadillac” with my bath towel firmly around my head
like a middle-eastern abiyah (woman’s head covering).
When I reached my quarters, I was covered in dirt! To my
utter dismay, I saw a film of dirt on my bedcovers that had
come in through the crevices of my connex box! With every
breath, I could feel the dirt coating the insides of my nose,
mouth, and airways. Yuk! I hunkered down for the night with
my sheet as far over my head as I could and awoke the next
morning with dirt crusted around my eyes and nose!
When I walked outside, all I saw was that everything in sight
was covered in dirt and dust – not just a film, but at least ½
inch of the stuff. I remember thinking, “This truly is a Godforsaken
place! God left when Abraham did!” That was my
frustrating talking! And so our team and the rest of the base
set about digging and sweeping ourselves out from the layers
of dirt under which we were buried. “Remember you are dust,
and to dust you shall return…”
We have come close to being at the mid-point of our fourmonth
deployment together. Mid-point is when reality hits.
Personality conflicts start to show, the urgency of getting settled
in has subsided, patience begins to wear thin – in other
words, reality descends and it takes great effort to stay focused
on the mission and keep one’s spirits up.
I am reminded of the words of our Ash Wednesday
confession: “We confess to you, Lord, the pride, hypocrisy,
and impatience in our lives…our anger at our own frustration,
and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves…our
intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts… our negligence
in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the
faith that is in us…” Like the people of Israel murmuring in the
desert, it is so easy to complain about what we do not have
and the inconveniences of daily life and not see what God has
given us. Lord, forgive us…
Yet, in the midst of our complaining, the dirt, the daily struggle
to find ways to praise God, there comes a spring in the desert.
The word “Lent” literally means springtime – the promise of
resurrection and new life. In this place of dirt, sand, and brown
– I have been delighted to see patches of green growing in the
most unlikely places – like springs in a desert (see picture). I
celebrated my promotion to Major with brave Americans who
have also raised their right hand to “defend the Constitution
against all enemies foreign and domestic” (see picture). God
has a way of bringing green into our brown and dusty lives
when we least expect it – the kind word from a friend, a letter
or package arriving just at that moment of loneliness, pictures
of Bedouin children who have received the generosity of
Americans who truly care through the efforts of our own
“Operation Iraqi Child.”
“Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return….” We
remember that God will make all things new in Christ’s resurrection.
God bless you on this Lenten journey.
Blessings,
APRIL 2007 THE WORDS OF PEACE Page 19 of 24
God's peace everyone!
Well, we are four weeks into the new semester, and
things are going okay. I am taking four course this
spring (hah! It isn't really spring yet here in Chicago!):
Lutheran Confessions, Worship, Church History II
(Reformation to Now), and Jesus and the Gospels. The
scripture and history courses are fairly easy, the confessions
course is a little bit more difficult (though not terribly
hard, since Mark Olsen was kind enough to catechize
me with the Book of Concord, so I know it better
than most everyone else in class) but the worship course
is particularly difficult, mostly because it involves things
I have little to no knowledge about coming in and uses a
lot of very specific terminology for things. It doesn't
help that the class is full of worship geeks who, having
the benefit of having been raised some kind of Lutheran,
get what stuff is about. It's new to me, but I'm managing.
There's a lot of reading -- we have this big fat Fortress
Press book on Christian liturgy that simply leaves me
wondering exactly which bus it was that just hit me (bad
joke, I'm sorry). Jennifer, of course, disputes that description.
But she would.
I have been working, this month, at a temp job at the
church-wide office, in the global missions office, processing
expense account reports from missionaries. Most
do a reasonable job of sums, but a few couldn't add
numbers and multiply enough to do currency conversions
to save their souls. (And because we are Lutheran,
we know they don't have to ... more bad humor.) It's a
temp job, until they hire someone new to fill the post.
Which will be, oh, who knows. I work three days a
week, usually, except I have been so good at doing the
work they give me that they don't need me Tuesday and
Wednesday this week because there simply isn't enough
for me to do. At least, that's what I was just told. Anyway,
that will give me more time to contemplate the
thick and verbose book on Christian liturgy, which is
good. And less money to buy groceries and pay bills,
which is bad.
Jennifer is still recovering from her accident last January,
and some days her right foot hurts more than others,
but she's doing okay. She still has not found a job, but
not for lack of trying. Last week she had an interview, at
a day care operated by a women's drug treatment clinic
not far from downtown, which was the first (and so far
only) interview she got after submitting more than a
dozen resumes. She works one night a week at the seminary,
cleaning floors and bathrooms, and that helps, but
It’s a
FEATHERLETTER!
it's tough in the midst of winter when all that salt crud
covers the floors and makes that cleaning difficult. So to
keep herself busy, she goes to class with me. (I ought to
make her write a few papers...) We're managing, with
God's grace and help. Prayers -- especially that Jennifer
find work -- would be very, very helpful.
However, it looks like I'm likely going to need more
than four years to finish this. I am not going to be doing
Clinical Pastoral Education this summer, as I am likely
not ready for it, and that will likely put my entire program
out of whack. I won't say this is typical, but it happens
often enough, so I'm not too worried. Because of
that, I will probably go to part-time next fall, and take
only three classes rather than four per semester, and see
how that goes. I'd actually like to work in a bike shop
this summer (believe it or not), even though it wouldn't
pay as well as something else. I'm not a great fan of sitting
at desks for long periods of time and I don't find
pushing paper around terribly rewarding as work. I like
to sweat when I work, and not just because the room is
hot. I've already had one offer from a local bike shop,
and so we shall see just how serious they are once we
can rely on an end to the snow/slush/icy rain (we had all
three this last weekend). An interesting thing here is that
twice now, when bike shop workers have looked my
bike over, they ask me if I'm looking for work when I
tell them I built it. A good sign But also this summer
I'm planning on doing a course of independent study
with my academic advisor, Mark Swanson, and we're
going to work out a reading/discussion plan, probably
focusing on Alexandrian church fathers from the 3rd,
4th and 5th centuries.
Well, I need to start dealing with liturgy. I hope you all
are doing well, and thank you all for everything you
have done. Keep us in your prayers, and may God bless
you and keep you.
The special offering at Easter will go to Lutheran World Relief and ELCA World
Hunger. We see the desperate need all around us. Please be generous.
April’s special offering is for
the Lutheran Camps in our
Synod, Mar-Lu-Ridge and
Camp Caroline Furnace.
Many of us remember the
fun of camping when we
were children. This experience
can be an important
aid in grounding children in
their faith and raising faithful
adults. Camping can
also be a time to hear God’s
call, perhaps to the ordained
ministry!
This year Camp Caroline
Furnace is celebrating its
50 th year. Please help support
this important ministry.
