meaning of our lives with the talents and abilities we have. May the Lord bless all of you who have accepted
the vocation of fatherhood.
We also pray that, in the face of the many challenges and pressures which confront marriage and family life
within our society, we all will be strong in upholding the importance of committed love and the dignity of all
life.
As we begin the summer months with its time for vacations and rest, we pray that the Lord will be with you
and refresh you with a renewed awareness of His presence around you.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
During the sacrifice of the Mass, we are invited to offer one another the sign of peace. This interaction
reminds us that peace in the world begins with each one of us. Appropriately, this year’s Peter’s Pence
Collection calls the faithful worldwide to Cast the Peace of Christ upon the World. In many locations
around the world the Church is challenged daily to be a visible sign of Christ’s peace. In some dioceses many
are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support. Likewise, our brothers and sisters in the Faith
who have been marginalized or victims of natural disasters, war and economic oppression are most in need of
Christ’s peace.
Our support of this annual collection will not only unite us in solidarity with the Holy Father and the faithful
worldwide, but it provides Pope Benedict XVI the resources to respond in love and charity to those most in
need of Christ’s peace.
May Our Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones as you share the peace of Christ in your parish, the

WHY CONSCIENCE IS IMPORTANT
During the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Americans shone the light of the Gospel on a dark history of
slavery, segregation, and racial bigotry. The civil rights movement was an essentially religious movement, a call to
awaken consciences.
In his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail” in 1963, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. boldly said, “The goal of America is
freedom.” As a Christian pastor, he argued that to call America to the full measure of that freedom was the specific
contribution Christians are obliged to make. He rooted his legal and constitutional arguments about justice in the long
Christian tradition: “I would agree with Saint Augustine that ‘An unjust law is no law at all.’… A just law is a man-made code
that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law.”
Some unjust laws impose such injustices on individuals and organizations that disobeying the laws may be justified. Every
effort must be made to repeal them. When fundamental human goods, such as the right of conscience, are at stake, we may
need to witness to the truth by resisting the law and incurring its penalties.
The church does not ask for special treatment, simply the rights of religious freedom for all citizens. Rev. King also explained
that the church is neither the master nor the servant of the state, but its conscience, guide, and critic.
Catholics and many other Americans have strongly criticized the recent Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
mandate requiring almost all private health plans to cover contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs. For the
first time in our history, the federal government will force religious institutions to fund and facilitate coverage of a drug or
procedure contrary to their moral teaching, and purport to define which religious institutions are “religious enough” to merit
an exemption. This is a matter of whether religious people and institutions may be forced by the government to
provide such coverage even when it violates our consciences.
What we ask is nothing more than the right to follow our consciences as we live out our teaching. This right is not only about
our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home. It is about whether we can make our contribution to the
common good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to do, without having to compromise that very
same faith Without religious liberty properly understood, all Americans suffer, deprived of the essential contribution in
education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and social services that religious Americans make every day.
What is at stake is whether America will continue to have a free, creative, and robust civil society—or whether the state alone
will determine who gets to contribute to the common good, and how they get to do it.

entero a Proyectar la Paz de Cristo al Mundo. En muchos lugares de todo mundo la Iglesia recibe el desafío diario de ser
la señal visible de la paz de Cristo. En algunas diócesis muchos dependen de la Iglesia para recibir ayuda social y
pastoral. Del mismo modo, nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la fe que han sido marginados o han sido víctimas de
desastres naturales, de la guerra y de la opresión económica son los que más necesitan la paz de Cristo.
Nuestro apoyo a esta colecta anual no sólo nos unen en solidaridad con el Santo Padre y con los fieles del mundo, sino
que proporciona al Papa Benedicto XVI los recursos para responder con amor y caridad a los más necesitados de la paz

POR QUÉ LA CONCIENCIA ES IMPORTANTE
Durante el movimiento de derechos civiles de las décadas de 1950 y 1960, los estadounidenses hicieron que brillara la luz del

fue esencialmente un movimiento religioso, una llamada a despertar las conciencias.
En 1963, en su famosa “Carta desde la cárcel de Birmin-gham”, el Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., expresó de forma audaz: “El
objetivo de Estados Unidos es la libertad”. Como pastor cristiano, argumentó que para lograr que EE. UU gozara al máximo
de esa libertad, se necesitaba la contri-bución específica que los cristianos estaban obligados a hacer. Sus argumentos legales y
constitucionales sobre la justicia los enraizó en la antigua tradición cristiana: “Estoy de acuerdo con San Agustín cuando dijo:
‘Una ley injusta no es una ley’.[…] Una ley justa es un código hecho por el hombre que encuadra con la ley moral o la ley de
Dios. Una ley injusta es un código que no está en armonía con la ley moral”.
Algunas leyes injustas imponen tales injusticias en individuos y organizaciones que desobedecer esas leyes puede justificarse.
Hay que hacer todo lo posible para que sean anuladas. Cuando bienes humanos fundamentales, como el derecho de
conciencia, están en juego, es posible que sea necesario dar testimonio de la verdad resistiendo la ley e incurriendo en sus
sanciones.
La Iglesia cristiana no pide que se le trate de forma especial, simplemente pide los derechos de libertad religiosa para todos
los ciudadanos. El Reverendo King también explicó que la Iglesia no es ni el amo ni el esclavo del Estado, sino que es su
conciencia, su guía y su crítico.
Los católicos y muchos otros grupos estadounidenses han criticado fuertemente el reciente mandato del Departamento de
Salud y Servicios Humanos (HHS, sigla en inglés) que requiere que casi todos los planes privados de seguros médicos cubran
los anticonceptivos, la esterilización y las drogas abortivas. Por primera vez en nuestra historia, el gobierno federal obligará a
las instituciones religiosas a facilitar y pagar por algo que es contrario a sus enseñanzas morales, pretendiendo definir cuáles
instituciones religiosas son “suficientemente religiosas” como para ameritar una exención. La cuestión es que si las
personas e instituciones religiosas deben ser forzadas por el gobierno a proveer tal cobertura aun cuando estas
prácticas violen su conciencia.
Lo que pedimos es solo nuestro derecho a seguir nuestra conciencia en cómo vivir nuestra fe. Este derecho no consiste solo
en asistir a misa los domingos o rezar el rosario en el hogar. Se trata de poder contribuir al bien común de todos los
estadounidenses. ¿Podemos hacer el bien que nuestra fe nos pide sin transigir en los principios que sostienen esa fe Sin una
comprensión correcta de lo que es la libertad religiosa, todos los estadounidenses se verán afectados al faltarles aportes
esenciales como educación, servicios de salud, asistencia a los que sufren hambre, derechos civiles y servicios sociales,

REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Registration for the Religious Education program for the 2012-2013 year will take place on Wednesday,
July 25, 2012 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm and on Sunday, July 29, 2012 after the morning masses. Registration
will take place in the Rectory on both dates.
We require a copy of your child's/children's baptismal and First Communion (if they have made their First
Communion) certificate when you register. We also require that your first payment be made on registration
day. The first payment for a family with one child in the program is $75. For two children from the same
family the first payment is $100 and for three or more in the same family the first payment is $125. Your
balance will then be payable in 5 equal payments over a period of five months beginning in October. NO
REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT CERTIFICATES OR PROPER PAYMENT.
Our regular classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:45 pm beginning on August 22, 2012. We
require a minimum of two consecutive years in a Religious Education program before any sacraments will be
received. If your child/children are in third grade or higher and need to receive First Communion, they will be
required to attend extra classes on Sunday mornings during their second year of our program.
If you have any questions, please call the Religious Education office at 773-767-7078. Once we have filled all
the available spots, we will no longer accept registrations.
PICTURES & COMMUNION DVDS ARE IN!
If you have ordered First Communion pictures or a DVD,
you may pick them up at the rectory during regular office
hours. The rectory is open Monday through Friday from 9
AM to 8 PM, Saturday from 9AM to 6 PM, and Sunday from
10:30 AM to 2 PM.
What is RCIA
RCIA or The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a
process for adults who were never baptized, were
baptized in a different faith tradition, or were baptized
Catholic but never received the sacraments of Eucharist
or Confirmation and are interested in finding out more
about the Catholic faith. The process explores and
explains what Catholics believe and why. It provides the
participants the opportunity to develop their faith and
their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
We will begin our weekly meetings in September. The
process culminates at the Easter Vigil with the reception
of the Sacraments of Initiation.

Arrangements should be made at least 4 months in
advance (prior to engaging hall) to allow for adequate
preparation and instruction. Contact the Rectory for an
appointment.
CONVERTS: RCIA
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults begins each year
in September, reaches its climax with Baptism or
reception into the Church at the Easter Vigil (Holy
Saturday), and concludes on the fiftieth day of Easter, the
feast of Pentecost.
COMMUNION CALLS:
Please call the Rectory to arrange for Communion to be
brought to the sick.
SICK CALLS:
For confession, anointing of the sick or in any emergency,
