GIVING
BACK
Local Ties
Driving
the Future of Aviation
Regarded by many as the most powerful club in a golf caddy, the driver propels a golf ball
long distances toward the cup. For almost 100 years, Boeing has been the driver of discovery
and technology, producing world-changing products and services that have propelled
the aerospace industry long distances to reach new frontiers. Forecasts suggest that over
the next 20 years the world’s fleet of commercial airplanes will double in size. To meet this
demand, Boeing is hard at work developing tomorrow’s airplanes today.
The 787-8 Dreamliner
is performing well in
service with airlines
around the world.
New members of the
787 family that can
fly more passengers
farther with unmatched fuel efficiencies
are not far behind. The 787-9 leverages
the visionary design of the 787-8, incorporating
passenger-pleasing features
that make the flying experience more
comfortable and enjoyable. In May, the
first 787-9 began final assembly on time
in Everett, and the airplane is on track
to fly later this year. In June, Boeing
launched the third and largest member
of the family, the 787-10, which already
has support from top airlines around the
world.
And that’s not all. Boeing has new
products on the horizon that will ensure
continued leadership in the twin- and
single-aisle markets.
Boeing recently began developing the
777X, a new derivative of the passengerpreferred
777 model. Building upon
today’s 777 reliability for long-haul flight,
the 777X will feature new engines and
composite wings to comfortably and efficiently
transport passengers and deliver
cargo worldwide.
In 2011, Boeing announced the 737
MAX will be the next installment in the
737 family. Building on the best-selling
Next-Generation 737, the 737 MAX
will offer better fuel efficiency and an
increased range of flight. The Boeing Sky
Interior with larger overhead bins will
further enhance the flying experience
for passengers. In addition to increased
efficiency, range and comfort, the MAX
will offer a superior environmental advantage
over similarly sized airplanes with
reduced CO₂ and noise emissions.
Boeing is also producing a new aerial
refueling system for the U.S. Air Force.
Building off the commercial 767, the
KC-46 Tanker will offer advanced refueling
capabilities while maintaining exceptional
operating and fuel efficiencies.
Near the end of the decade, these
new airplanes will join a long line of
beloved products and services offered
by Boeing. The 787 Dreamliner is now
in service and flying passengers all over
the world. The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental
continues to offer double-digit
improvements in burn emissions over its
predecessor, while generating 30 percent
less noise. The Next-Generation 737
and Boeing 777 continue to be favorites
among the world’s airlines. Additionally,
Boeing’s Commercial Aviation Services
organization provides renowned service
to our airline customers, keeping their
airplanes in top flying condition.
Giving back is a defining
characteristic of Boeing
culture. In 2012, the company,
its employees and retirees
collectively contributed
$51 million to improve lives
and communities in the
Northwest. These dollars
benefited health and
human services, arts and
culture, civic endeavors,
education, the environment,
and military members,
veterans and their families.
Although we may be best known
for our commercial airplanes, Boeing
provides so much more. The Boeing
Defense, Space and Security unit supplies
global military, government and commercial
customers with a wide range
of defense and space products, such as
transport aircraft, fighter jets, helicopters,
satellites and launch services and leadingedge
communications technologies.
Boeing Capital Corporation provides
global financing solutions for the sale
and delivery of our products. Boeing’s
Shared Services Group provides the
infrastructure services needed to run
global operations. And Boeing Engineering,
Operations and Technology supports
the company with critical skills, processes
and technologies.
With more than 160,000 employees
worldwide, an innovative product development
strategy and services to ensure
the success of our customers, we are
well-positioned for growth and continued
leadership in an increasingly competitive
market.
And while Boeing is a global company,
it never loses sight of its local
ties. All of Boeing’s operating groups
have a significant presence in the Puget
Sound region. In addition to the 85,000
employees in the state, our extended
enterprise includes thousands of suppliers
and vendors who provide tens of thousands
of non-aerospace jobs throughout
Washington.
Giving back is a defining characteristic
of Boeing culture, and its commitment to
philanthropy is far-reaching. In 2012, the
company, its employees and retirees collectively
contributed $51 million to improve
lives and communities in the Northwest.
These dollars benefited health and human
services, arts and culture, civic endeavors,
education, the environment, and military
members, veterans and their families.
Our employees have a history of generously
responding to crises around the
world with financial contributions to
regions in need. Just this spring, Boeing
and its employees contributed nearly
$550,000 to support tornado stricken locations
in the United States. Boeing and
its airline customers regularly partner to
transport needed relief supplies through
the company’s Humanitarian Delivery
Flight program.
In July, Boeing launched its Global
Month of Service, a monthlong series of
health and human services projects led
and deployed by Boeing employees aimed
at helping local communities.
We believe that in addition to strong
business performance, the true measure
of a great company is shown by commitment
to the communities where
its employees live and work, which we
strive to demonstrate every day. We are
proud of the partnerships we have with
the people of Washington state, and together
we will continue driving toward a
prosperous future.
