YOUR GUIDE TO THEATRE, ATTRACTIONS & LIVE EVENTS FROM
Advance Education
A Classic
Renewed
An all star cast featuring
Kristin Scott-Thomas and
MacKenzie Crook arrives at
the Royal Court this
February to perform THE
SEAGULL, one of Anton
Chekhov’s greatest plays.
THE SEAGULL is one of the
great plays about writing. It
superbly captures the
struggle for new forms, the
frustrations and fulfilments
of putting words on a page.
Chekhov, in his first major
play, stages a vital argument
about the theatre which still
resonates today.
Christopher Hampton
returns to the Royal Court
with his new adaptation of
this classic, directed by Ian
Rickson, in his last
production as Artistic
Director of the theatre.
In partnership with Royal
Court Education we are
offering groups who book for
THE SEAGULL the
opportunity take part in
practical writing led
workshops at the Royal
Court. Students will produce
their own short piece of
writing with direct reference
to THE SEAGULL and its
themes. The workshops will
also be an excellent
preparation for the students
seeing this production.
Evita: The First Lady of
Media Manipulation
EVITA, with music by
Andrew Lloyd Webber and
lyrics by Tim Rice, wowed
the critics when it opened at
London’s Adelphi Theatre in
June this year. ‘Oh, what a
show!’ said The
Independent. ‘A sensational
hit all over again’, wrote The
Mail on Sunday.
Directed by award-winning
Michael Grandage, this
EVITA is a vibrant and
colourful production that
brings audiences to their
feet. It tells the gripping story
of Eva Peron, who used her
beauty and charisma to rise
from the slums of Argentina
to the presidential mansion
as First Lady.
EVITA features dazzling
numbers, including Don’t
Cry for Me, Argentina and
Another Suitcase in Another
Hall, together with You Must
Love Me, the Oscar winning
song from the film of EVITA.
WORKSHOP
Students will discover how
history can be distorted and
opinions swayed through
media’s depiction of events.
The workshop commences
with Acting Games for warm
up and then explores music’s
long-standing role in teaching
history to the public. The
workshop concludes by
examining a recent event and
the way in which it was
reported by print, television
and digital media resources.
This will result in an acting
exercise in which students
are encouraged to report the
event from a different point of
view or bias.
A ‘Wicked’ way to learn
The multi-award winning
Broadway smash hit
WICKED is now a West End
sensation. Based on the
acclaimed novel by Gregory
Maguire, WICKED tells the
captivating story of an
extraordinary friendship
between two girls: the blond
and popular ‘Glinda’ and the
misunderstood green girl,
‘Elphaba’, whose destiny is
to become the infamous
Wicked Witch of the West.
WICKED stars West End
favourites Kerry Ellis and
Adam Garcia alongside TV
and stage stars Nigel Planer
as ‘The Wizard’ and Miriam
Margolyes as ‘Madame
Morrible’. The spectacular
musical is brought to life by
Broadway’s finest creative
talents including Grammy
Award-winning music and
lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
(GODSPELL).
WORKSHOP
This 90-minute workshop is
the perfect introduction for
non-drama students and
drama students alike to
everything that is Oz…and
beyond. Participants will learn
the literary and political
history of both The Wizard of
Oz and WICKED and examine
how point-of-view in
storytelling affect the
audience. Students will be
encouraged to find ways of
looking at people and
situations from many angles.
What does it mean to be
‘wicked’ Is everything black
and white or can things be
different then how they seem
This workshop is the perfect
compliment to the unique retelling
of the Wizard of Oz by
exploring the Darker Side of
Oz. Following the concept of
Citizenship, the workshop
aims to show that the old
adage ‘You can’t judge a book
by its cover’ is even more
important in today’s society.
of Queen’s greatest hits
including Killer Queen, It’s
thoughts and where all
break free… is Galileo the
man for the job
WORKSHOP
How does one write a musical
from existing and established
music, like the songs of
Queen What is the
relationship of today’s popular
shows, like WE WILL ROCK
YOU to the opera of centuries
ago
This workshop will stretch the
minds of creative students to
think like a musical theatre
writer. Students will examine
the music and lyrics of three
songs from WE WILL ROCK
YOU to devise their own
storyline and staging. At the
end of 90 minutes, students
will have created their own
groundwork for staging their
very own West End
musical!
Two-time Academy Awardwinner
Jessica Lange
returns to the West End for
a strictly limited season in a
new production of
Tennessee Williams'
masterpiece THE GLASS
MENAGERIE.
Winner of the New York
Drama Critics Circle Award
for Best Play, THE GLASS
MENAGERIE premiered on
Broadway in 1945 and was
the playwright's first great
success. Set in St. Louis in
the 1930's, this ‘memory
play’ tells the story of the
Wingfield family - Tom, who
is torn between his obligation
to his family and his desire to
break away, his overbearing
mother Amanda, and his frail
sister Laura, whose memory
he cannot escape.
Loosely based upon the
family and life experiences of
Tennessee Williams, Tom’s
actions and memories
provide a thought-provoking
insight into the lives of the
lower-middle-classes of
1930s Midwest America. A set
text for GCSE Drama,
students will gain a deeper
comprehension of both the
Your Nightmares
Become a Reality
THE WOMAN IN BLACK, is
now in its eighteenth year in
the West End. Unanimously
acclaimed by the critics,
THE WOMAN IN BLACK
combines the power and
intensity of live theatre with
a cinematic quality inspired
by the world of film noir.
A lawyer obsessed with a
curse that he believes has
been cast over him and his
family by the spectre of a
Woman in Black, engages a
skeptical young actor to help
him tell his terrifying story
and exorcise the fear that
grips his soul. It all begins
innocently enough, but then
as they reach further into his
darkest memories, they find
themselves caught up in a
world of eerie marshes and
moaning winds. The borders
between make-believe and
reality begin to blur and the
flesh begins to creep…
WORKSHOP
This workshop explores
storytelling, simple staging
and creating mood and
atmosphere. Students will
examine key elements of
storytelling and how a simple
story can be transformed into
a spine-chilling drama.
Through writing, narration,
physical images and
soundscape, students will
stage their own stories
during the session as well as
examining elements from the
text. We also offer an
Advanced Workshop, which
is ideal for drama students.
