Advantages and Disadvantages<br />

• Messy<br />

• Relatively easy to apply with proper training<br />

• Cannot be easily removed<br />

• Off-loads pressure<br />

– It has been said that each step on a diabetic<br />

foot wound increases healing time by 2<br />

weeks<br />

• Applied in office setting<br />

• Covered by most insurances<br />

• Allows patient to ambulate short<br />

distances and keep excessive pressure<br />

from occurring at the wound<br />

• Can be time consumming to apply<br />

• Patient must wait 20 minutes to allow cast<br />

to harden<br />

• If improperly applied, can actually increase<br />

pressure<br />

– Must evaluate <strong>for</strong> PVD or can increase<br />

ischemia<br />

• Not easy to remove (must use cast saw)<br />

• Can not get wet<br />

• May increase walking<br />

– Pt feels it is ok to walk more since foot is in<br />

special cast<br />

• Cannot be used with active infection
