2011-12 Central Michigan Women’s Basketball Last Time Out: W, 86-62 vs. Ball State MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan women’s basketball team punched its ticket to the next round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament in Cleveland with an 86-62 win over Ball State on Saturday. The Chippewas (17-14, 8-8 MAC) used a 6-0 run to begin the game and never looked back as they secured a spot against Ohio, who defeated Kent State 58-40 today, in the second roound of the tournament Wednesday at noon. The CMU defense forced the Cardinals (9-21, 4-12 MAC) into 28 turnovers that led to 22 points. The Chippewas also out-rebounded the visitors by a count of 53-50 and 22-11 on the offensive boards. CMU had its second highest steal total of the season at 15. Brandie Baker scored four of the team’s first six points to put the Maroon and Gold up 6-0. Both teams traded baskets for about five minutes until BSU used a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 15-14 at 12:08. Jas’Mine Bracey scored six straight points during a Chippewa 13-3 run to put the home team up, 28-17, at 4:27. With 33 seconds left in the first half, Jordan LaDuke hit CMU’s first threepointer of the half and sent the Chippewas into the break up 36-23. The Maroon and Gold were able to score 26 out of their 36 first half points in the paint, while forcing BSU into 16 first-half turnovers. BSU was able to cut the home team’s lead to nine at 13:12 following five straight points from Suzanne Grossnickle, who finished the game with a game-high 25 points. The Chippewas responded with an 8-0 run to make the lead 55-38 at 11:26. The lead remained above 14 until a three-ball from the Cardinals cut the gap to 13 with 7:32 showing on the clock. CMU scored seven straight points making the game 68-48 at 6:02, and kept the gap around 20 to close out the game. Bracey, Baker and Taylor Johnson all finished with 13 points and Bradford chipped in with 10. Both Bracey and Bradford each had nine rebounds while Baker forced four steals. As a team the Chippewas shot 40 percent (36-90) from the floor and 33.3 percent (3-9) from behind the arc. They held the Cardinals to only 32.8 percent (20- 61) from the field and 24.1 percent (7-29) from the three-point line. See box score on final page of notes for more information. Last Time Versus Ohio: W, 67-53 MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Crystal Bradford recorded her sixth double-double of the season in Central Michigan’s 67-53 win Jan. 25 over Ohio. After falling behind 4-2, Jas’Mine Bracey scored six quick points to put the Chippewas in front of the Bobcats for good. Guevara started her eighth different lineup tonight in Bracey, Taylor Johnson, Jessica Green, Bradford and Niki DiGuilio, which combined for 57 points. After giving up four quick points to the visitors, CMU used a 15-0 run, with points from four different players, to grab a 17-4 lead at 13:04. OU cut the lead to six with 6:14 remaining in the half following a short 11-4 run. The Chippewas quickly made the lead double-digits off layups from Bradford and Green at 5:39. After both teams traded baskets the home squad claimed a nine-point, 30-21, at halftime. Skylar Miller hit a layup for CMU 2:07 into the second half, to hand the home team a 35-25 lead, which it never relinquished. Following a 12-4 run, which was capped off with a Green layup, the Maroon and Gold pushed their cushion to 15. With 8:10 left to play, DiGuilio hit a three-pointer that was followed by a jumper from Johnson to give the Chippewas their largest lead at 19. Despite only attempting eight total free throws, the Maroon and Gold’s offense shot 43.8 percent from the floor to hold off the Bobcats and claim their 11th straight MAC win at home. CMU held OU to only 29.3 percent from the floor, the second lowest by an opponent this season. The Chippewas scored 40 of their 67 points in the paint while holding the Bobcats to only 20. There will be no player interviews on game day prior to tipoff. Players and coaches are generally available following practice during the week, or by appointment if necessary. CMU practices are generally closed to outside parties unless arrangements are made in advance. Radio and television crews are asked to complete any pregame interviews with head coach Sue Guevara prior to two hours before tipoff. Postgame Interviews Both head coaches and requested players will be brought to the media room after a 10-minute cooling off period, with the visiting coach and players speaking first. Full statistical packets will be available at this time. The CMU locker room is closed to all outside parties. The Chippewa Name The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees has approved the continued use of the name “Chippewas” in association with CMU. The university’s goals are to use the name with honor and respect, increase supportive connections between CMU and Native Americans, and improve efforts to sensitize students, faculty, and staff to Native American traditions and cultures. Media representatives have been extremely cooperative as we have worked to address this important issue. In nearly all cases, print and broadcast reporters have supported CMU’s efforts to eliminate the use of symbols, headlines, and copy that present inappropriate and inaccurate images of Native Americans. Central Michigan University is grateful for your help, and we ask for your continued cooperation and sensitivity. With your assistance, we can continue to use the Chippewa name with dignity and respect. Johnson led the offense with 16 points tying her season-high. Bradford finished the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds along with four blocks. Green chipped in with 15 points and tied her season-high assists at six while DiGuilio added 10 points.
