Time To Praise Young People
Do you know young people who truly care for their
environment
The Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group [MWHG], a registered
charity, is seeking nominations for the Eileen Savill Award. This is
a new annual award for young people, under 25 years of age, who
contribute to the conservation or celebration of the landscape,
wildlife or heritage of the Manhood Peninsula, or help others learn
about this special place.
The award is open to individuals or groups who have shown
enthusiasm and commitment towards practical conservation work
or learning about the wildlife and/or heritage of the area or celebrating
it through art, photography, writing etc. Those nominated do not
have to live on the Manhood Peninsula but their activities must
relate to it.
Examples of actions meriting nomination could include:
● ● Setting up a wildlife garden
● ● Taking part in survey work
● ● Regular volunteering for an environmental or heritage
group
● ● Keeping a nature diary or records of sightings
● ● Helping to clean up an area
● ● A research project
● ● Helping others to understand more about their local
heritage or wildlife
● ● Leading practical conservation tasks
● ● Writing, art or photography inspired by local landscapes,
wildlife or heritage
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
Do the dog owners of Selsey think there is a DOG POO FAIRY I
think they must by the large number of plastic bags containing dog
excrement which I see tucked into hedges, placed on garden walls
and sometimes placed on top of household bins if they are easily
reached from the pavement.
I suppose they feel they have done their duty by picking it up in the
first place, which is a start, but it definitely doesn’t end there.
Let us spell it out to these Dog Owners: THERE DEFINITELY IS
NOT A DOG POO FAIRY – THE COUNCIL HAVE PROVIDED
SPECIAL BINS FOR IT AND THESE SHOULD BE USED.
However, it is possible we need more of these bins - perhaps there
are more dogs in Selsey now. In which case the Council should do
a survey to find out and address the current need, also ensuring
they are emptied regularly.
Yours sincerely,
Marjorie Graham
SELSEY WI
A very well attended April meeting heard Bob Hailey give a talk
entitled ‘Christ’s Hospital – life in an extraordinary school’. He told
us about his life as a House Master at the school, as well as some
amusing anecdotes of things that pupils had said to him. We heard
how the school was set up in the 1500s to help needy children to
have an education they wouldn’t aspire to otherwise, and this is
true to this day with some of the pupils paying no fees at all. One
interesting fact was that Barnes Wallace (inventor of the ‘Bouncing
Bomb’) was a pupil at the school.
Amid many groans, Secretary Stella Crist announced it was time to
order calendars and diaries for next year! Joan Wills reminded
members that final payment was due at the next meeting for the
outing to the Hospital of Saint Cross at Winchester and Jane
Austen’s house at Chawton, which will take place in June. After tea
and the distribution of birthday cards, Joan Wills set everyone
thinking with a quiz about teachers and education, in keeping with
our theme of schooldays. We had a very interesting display of
members’ old school photographs, including one of May Swanson
(our oldest member – she will be 92 next month) showing her in
class when she was 9 years old at the ‘Old School’ in the High
Street in Selsey, which is now two cottages.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 8th May 2013, which is our
Resolutions meeting. The competition is Part I of the Gardner Cup
– a handicraft beginning with the letter ‘Q’. For more information,
Seal Island W.I.
A big thank you to our friends and the local community
who supported our first major fund raising event of the
year on Easter Saturday at Selsey Town Hall. Despite the bitterly
cold day, the Eggstravaganza attracted many visitors and raised
over £400 for our funds.
At our April meeting Stephanie Pudney welcomed one visitor to a
packed hall. A discussion was held on our entry for the Selsey
Horticultural Show later in the year. Volunteers were asked for to
help with this and also to make squares for our new WI Banner. Val
Lanning gave the Treasurers Report and asked for a vote to give
£50 from the Eggstravaganza profit to the Denman Bursary. This
was approved and we now have nearly £250 towards helping one
of our members attend the WI college in Oxfordshire to improve on
or learn a new skill.
Stephanie then introduced our speaker Terri Robinson who gave
us a talk on the History of the English Canal and their people
followed by a demonstration of canal art. The canals have played
a big part in English industrial development for over 300 years and
are now an important sector in the country’s leisure industry.
During the two World Wars the narrowboats were used for carrying
troops and munitions. In the Second World War women were
drafted in to work the boats as the men had been called up. Terri
then gave a demonstration on the ‘Roses and Castles’ style of
painting which is common on narrowboats. Folk art in Finland,
Russia ,and Costa Rica is also very similar in the brush strokes
used. Members were also given the opportunity to have a go and
fun was had by all who tried.
Our next meeting will be held on Thursday 2nd May when we will
be discussing the AGM Resolution ‘Regeneration of the High
Street’. This will be followed by ‘Would I Lie to You’. Members are
asked to bring along two correct statements about themselves and
one lie for the rest of the audience to guess which is which.
All ladies are welcome to our meetings at the Selsey Centre on the
first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and we look forward to meeting
you. For further information telephone Stephanie Pudney on
