~ The Legend ~
In 1536 in the dry and arid land of Southern Spain with little water and few crops a travelling bookseller-
Juan Ciudad- on his way from the coast to Gaucin came across a young boy on the rough dirt track with
no shoes. The boy had an aura about him and Juan Ciudad was moved to help him by giving him his own
sandals so that he would not cut his feet, but the boy refused. Juan said to the child ‘Precious child and
brother, if you do not choose to use my sandals I will take the books from my shoulders and carry you on
them instead as God gave me these to use well and that is a priceless gift’. He carried the child for a while
towards Gaucin and tired and thirsty on the way rested the boy under a tree. A spring of pure clear water
miraculously came out of the ground. Then, the young child surprised Juan Ciudad by calling him by his
name and suddenly disappeared in a cloud of smoke. The child bequeathed an image and a voice of
himself that became a guide for Juan to follow in his journey of life. The child became known as Santo
Niño and to this day the people of Gaucin annually celebrate this event at the Ermita founded in his
memory.
It is at this place, La Adefilla, that the Ermita De Santo Niño stands with a fountain dated 1536 from
which walkers and animals to this day can still drink. The Ermita De Santo Niño is at the front gate of:
