Dear Parishioners,
As I mentioned last week, I am at a retreat house near Lake Charles
this weekend, February 4-6, helping to staff a “Come, Follow Me”
vocation retreat for men ages 16 – 40. The retreat is sponsored by
the three dioceses of Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Lake Charles, and
the talks and prayer services are led by seminarians from our
dioceses. Please pray for all of us on the retreat and for more vocations to the
priesthood and consecrated religious life.
I thank Father Tony Russo for assisting Father Andrew with the Mass schedule in my
absence. Please remember that the 6 p.m. Mass has been moved forward to
3 p.m. Mass this Sunday, February 6, because of the Super Bowl. This is
certainly not to imply that a football game is more important than the Mass but
merely in response to the low attendance for evening Mass on Super Bowl Sunday.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and flexibility on this and similar
occasions.
Last Sunday we began reading from the Sermon on the Mount as found in chapters
5-7 of the Gospel of St. Matthew. Since Easter is so late this year, we will be able to
reflect on this famous sermon for six consecutive Sundays of ordinary time. Matthew’s
account of this sermon is about four times as long as the similar passage in the Gospel
of Luke, and whereas Luke’s version emphasizes love, Matthew’s version emphasizes
righteousness. Followers of Christ play a very important function in and for the world:
our good deeds provide a service of love to our neighbor and ultimately give glory to
God the Father.
Since I mentioned that Easter is late this year, it might be helpful to review the
Church’s method for determining the date of Easter. Unlike Christmas which always
falls on December 25, the date for the celebration of Easter fluctuates according to the
movement of the planets. Easter is celebrated annually on the Sunday following the
first full moon after the vernal equinox. The vernal or March equinox occurs on
March 20 or 21 and marks the start of spring for the northern hemisphere. If you look
on your 2011 parish calendar, you will note that the first full moon after the equinox is
not until April 17, a Sunday, and so Easter is celebrated the following Sunday or
April 24 this year. We then simply count backwards to determine the date for
Ash Wednesday.
We will be using our new gold communion vessels at Masses between now and the
start of Lent. I plan to return to the silver set during the Lenten season and save the
gold set for Easter, Ordinary time and Christmas. It may take a couple of weeks for us
to become comfortable with the heavier weight of the new set, and for your priests and
deacon to become adept at pouring from the new pitcher. It was easy to judge the
quantity with the crystal carafe but not quite as simple with the new metal pitcher.
Thanks again for your generous support of financial stewardship which allows us to
beautify and support all of our ministries including the celebration of the Holy Mass.
FEATURE STORY
It is not too late to register for A Quick Journey Through the Bible
By Patricia Welther
For weeks we have been encouraging every family to prayerfully consider journeying with us through salvation
history. Over eight sessions we will learn how to read bible in a new way by following the story of God’s plan of salvation.
Each week we will cover one or more of the twelve key periods of salvation history beginning with the Early World told in
Genesis. As we begin Lent, we will study the period of the Patriarchs where we meet Jacob, who God renames Israel, and
his twelve sons, the twelve tribes of Israel. On week four, we will meet Moses, Aaron, Miriam, and Joshua as we study the
period of time that Israel spend in Egypt and wondering in the desert. This time of uniting our experience of Lent to the
experience of Israel will prepare us to understand the longing of Israel for the Messiah.
Studying the period of struggle and conquest that must come before the triumphant entry into the Promised Land will
be covered in week five when we study the period of Conquest & Judges and the Royal Kingdom of David. In week six,
we will move into the period of the Divided Kingdom and Exile that resulted because Israel turned away from God, followed
by week seven with the return from Exile and the Maccabean Revolt. And finally as we begin Holy Week, we will
complete the journey with the Messianic Fulfillment and the Church.
A Quick Journey Through the Bible study will be offered at St. Thomas More in activity center on Monday mornings at
10 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. on the following days: Feb. 21, 28, Mar. 14, 21, 28, Apr. 4, and 11. The evening sessions will
offer teen, kids and preschool programs and babysitting.
Registration is available online at www.stmchurch.org or by completing a registration form that is available in the
church office. There is no fee to participate but we greatly appreciate donations to cover the cost of the program
materials. Families are encouraged to register so that we can recruit enough leaders for the small groups, teen and
children’s program. To learn more, call Patricia Welther at 225-202-6437 or patricia.welther@gmail.com.
Celebration of Love — Feb. 11
Calling all hopeless (and helpless) romantics! Instead of, or maybe in
addition to, the standard box of chocolates or bouquet of flowers, why not
share an evening of dining and dancing with your Valentine
STM is sponsoring a Valentine dinner and dance on Friday, Feb. 11 at
Ashley Manor. The evening begins with a wine and cheese reception at
6:15 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. After a presentation by guest speaker
Brandt Hardy, the fabulous Foulon Brothers will entertain with a wide variety
of great dance music.
“Celebration of Love” tickets are only $50 per couple and include a wine
and cheese reception, a delicious 3-course dinner and dessert table, and
entertainment. A limited number of tickets are available at the church office.
A cash bar will be available during the dance portion of the evening.
Plan to spend Valentine’s Friday evening with your sweetheart and STM
friends. Ashley Manor is located just a short drive from the parish facilities at
14214 Old Hammond Hwy.
SENIOR MINISTRY RETREAT/DAY OF REFLECTION
Tuesday, February 22, 2011
9:30 AM to 2:30 PM
ACTIVITY CENTER
“Be Still and Know that I am God”
Presented by Fr. Tony Rauschuber, S.J.
In our hectic, materialistic world, it is often difficult to spend
quiet time with the Lord. The Spirituality Committee of the Senior
Ministry invites all adults to a special day of prayer- a time to go
deeper in our personal relationship with God, to experience His
loving presence , and to listen to the quiet voice within that says “I
am with you on the journey.”
Cost is $12.00; includes light breakfast, gumbo lunch and
presentations. Sign up in the church office until Feb. 16.
Checks only, please.
About Fr. Tony Rauschuber...in his own words
I grew up in a small city
in central Texas. Most of
my friends were from
farming families. My parents
were devout Catholics
and attended Mass daily. I
am the oldest of seven. We
prayed together as a family
Come after me and I will make you fishers
of men. Mt 4:19
every evening, at least until
we got to be teenagers.
I went to college at
Texas A & M and completed degrees in electrical engineering and a
master of business administration. I worked 11 years in sales and
marketing positions in Dallas and Houston.
I was introduced to the Jesuit order after completing college and
moving to Dallas for my first job. I did not meet a Jesuit until age 28.
The Jesuits at St. Rita’s Church in Dallas impressed me; their preaching
reawakened my faith. I was a late vocation, entering the Jesuit novitiate
at the age of 36. The Jesuits require extensive training and formation for
all their men. So, in addition to six years of college before entering
novitiate, the Jesuits sent me through six more years of philosophy and
theology study. I taught algebra and moral theology at Jesuit High
School in Tampa, Florida as part of my Jesuit formation. I was ordained
in 2005 at the age of 46.
My first assignment after ordination was to a Jesuit-sponsored
elementary and middle-school, The Good Shepherd School in New
Orleans. There I taught religion and was assistant principal. I moved to
Manresa in June of 2009. Currently I am superior of the Jesuit
Community at Manresa. I regularly lead preached retreats at Manresa, as
well as celebrating Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation during
all Manresa retreats.
I love to fish. My favorite fishing is inshore saltwater for redfish and
trout, but I also enjoy fishing for sac-a-lait and bass.
Fellowship Sunday is next
weekend
STM Scouts would like to invite all
parishioners to join them as they host
Fellowship Sunday on Feb. 13 after the 10 a.m.
Mass in the activity center. New families are
especially welcome to attend. Make plans now
to enjoy food and fun.
Baton Rouge Women’s Ultreya invites all
women who made a Cursillo to the Ultreya
meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
in the Our Lady of Mercy Parish
Activity Center, St. Gabriel Room. Fr.
Andrew Merrick will give a presentation on
the Supernatural Life. Come early for the
recitation of the Rosary at 6:05 p.m. Join us
and bring a friend. For more
STM School wins Future City Regional Competition for the twelfth year
By Kerry Hunt, STM School Development Director
A city of the future – “Scuba” – engineered by students from St.
Thomas More School Catholic School has won the 2011 Alabama Region
Future City competition, held in Huntsville, AL. The eighth grade
students – Brooke Doiron, Brandon Magazine and Shane Martin – teamed up
with their teacher Shirley Newman, and volunteer engineer mentor Ricky Lee,
an engineer with SEMS, Inc. in Baton Rouge. The team will travel to Washington,
DC to compete for the 2011 National Engineers Week Future City
Competition, February 19-23 to vie for the grand prize, a week at Space
Camp.
In addition to winning the Regional competition, the team was also awarded
the Student’s Choice Award for Best Model presented by the American Society
for Quality. Mentor, Ricky Lee was awarded the Engineer Mentor Award.
Sponsored by the nation’s professional engineering community, Future City
STM School wins Future City Regional
Competition. Future City team includes engineer
mentor, Ricky Lee, eighth grade students Shane
Martin, Brandon Magazine, Brooke Doiron and
teacher, Shirley Newman.
aims to stir interest in science, technology, math and engineering among young
people. Students work in teams under the guidance of a teacher and a volunteer
engineer mentor to design and build a city of tomorrow. They design future
cities on a computer and then use a blueprint to build a model of a city
section. They must also conduct research for an essay on a pressing social
need. This year the essay centers on providing a reliable and effective health care product or system that improves a sick,
injured or disabled patient’s quality of life and comfort. The STM team created a future city called “Scuba”, standing for
Site for Creating and Using Bio-chemical Apparatus, located off the coast of Alabama. The city’s mission is to promote
the well-being of its 100,000 residents and to protect is surrounding environment in the Gulf of Mexico.
This is the twelfth year for STM School to win Regional’s including competitions in Louisiana, Houston, Dallas, San
Antonio, and Alabama. STM won the National competition in 2005 and 2007.
