WE NEED YOUR HELP
Please
• The economy is hitting people hard –
including SMMP Parishioners
• SVdP is helping folks financially with
rent, utilities, medical bills and the
like.
• Our funds are critically low.
• We’re reaching a point of not being
able to assist those who request
assistance.
Your contributions at this time will be greatly appreciated
and will allow us to continue serving the needy in our
parish. We help fellow parishioners and those living
within our parish boundaries no matter their faith.
Should you wish to contribute, SVdP envelopes
are in the narthex and can be placed in the collection
First Friday Adoration
And Benediction
July 6
Pope John Paul II said. that the best,
most effective and surest way of
bringing lasting peace on earth is
through the great power of Eucharistic
adoration. Only Jesus has the
power and love to redirect the course
of history back to the path of peace,
which he promised. The Eucharist
brings peace to all hearts. And
peaceful hearts make a peaceful
world. O come let us adore Him in
the Blessed Sacrament!
Eucharistic adoration is held in the
chapel the first Friday of each month
following the 8:15 a.m. Mass and
Benediction until Noon.
God’s Share
The healing of the suffering woman required no words from her; she simply
trusted in the power of Jesus. Even after news came that his child was dead,
Jairus was encouraged by Jesus to have trust. Likewise, when we feel afraid
we, too, must have trust in the Lord. It is good that God desires for us, His
Stewards; we can be sure of that.
Catechists needed for 2012/2013 Year
So almost 80 parishioners have answered the call to be catechists
in the fall. We need about 24 more people to have our
classes fully staffed. Our goal is to have two catechists per
class to share responsibilities for the weekly lessons. It is
not necessary to have a child in the program. Many of our
volunteers have grown children but enjoy sharing their faith
with our young children. Training and materials will be provided.
If you are interested in joining our program, please
contact the RE office for further information.
Our openings are:
Parish Heartbeats:
Stories of Faith In Action
Project Gabriel Sends in the Angels
Did you know that angels often work in pairs Really, they do!
Through our parish’s Project Gabriel, caring women are sent out
in pairs to minister to women—pregnant women who find themselves
in crisis situations resulting from economic hardship,
domestic abuse, newly immigrated, or simply poor timing of the
pregnancy.
Meet Regina Carlson, ‘angel’ on the core team of Project Gabriel
at St. Margaret Mary. The consummate busy person, Regina
raised six children in Wheaton, eventually moving into this parish
13 years ago.
“With my kids grown, I wanted to feel like I was doing something,
and I needed to meet people,” she explained. “I wanted
to know what people in the parish were like.”
So she explored and she found what she was well-qualified to
do. Through her daughter, parishioner Joan McMillen, Regina
discovered Project Gabriel, which originated in Texas, and is a
ministry of Women’s Choice Services of the Diocese of Joliet.
Together, in 2008, they formed the Project Gabriel ministry at
St. Margaret Mary. Since then, 12 women from Naperville,
Woodridge and Bolingbrook have received assistance through
the program.
for baby-related donations. Although grateful for all generosity,
Regina admits to no storage space and asks that drop-offs be
made only when items are called for, usually as a notice in the
church Sunday bulletin.
Within St. Margaret Mary’s Project Gabriel ministry are: a prayer
team; a resource team (housing, jobs, county and state programs);
client ‘angels’ who relay a client’s needs to Regina (who
does the shopping) and who deliver items to houses or shops
for client pick-up.
“Our ‘angels’ help with many practical needs,” says Regina, “but
we support the women spiritually as well. We are not a counseling
service. Our relationship with the women is more about
camaraderie and faith sharing. We work to give mothers the
faith and confidence they need to survive.”
When asked if volunteers need particular skills, Regina explained
that WCS provides training, speakers, and classes.
Regina and Joan, as coordinators, receive training and materials
that they bring back to the group.
Once a pregnant woman in crisis is identified, WCS interviews
her and ensures that she has medical attention. WCS then provides
the parish with a profile sheet outlining the client’s location,
job status and needs. At St. Margaret Mary, an ‘angel’
from the core team is then assigned.
‘Angels’ work in pairs to provide help such as rides to doctor’s
appointments, or to parenting classes provided by WCS, where
attendance can earn expectant mothers points towards purchases
for their babies.
Relying on her belief that “you can’t know who is out there to
help unless you ask,” Regina speaks highly of the core team.
“I am thrilled that we have managed to pull this off! We don’t
have a lot of meetings, maybe three or four a year. I think there
can be too many meetings with volunteer work.”
And, when asked about a budget…. “We don’t need a budget,”
she laughs. “This parish is so generous.” A crib, set up in the
hallway upstairs outside the church Narthex, is the receptacle
5
Regina sums up what makes this ministry work: “A little sleeper
from Target is not a big deal, but when you put everything together,
it makes a world of difference.”
Exercising With St. Ignatius
By Al Gustafson
I was a weakling when it came to this kind of exercising…give
me a treadmill or the weight room any day over the exercise program
St. Ignatius had laid out. This was my conclusion back in
grad school when I had my first experience with the Spiritual
Exercises of St. Ignatius. The Exercises are a 500 year old spiritual
formation program created by Ignatius of Loyola, based on
his own spiritual journey. The Exercises have been part of the
spiritual development of every brother and priest that has ever
been a member of the Society of Jesus, as well as countless lay
Catholics, Protestants and even Jews, Muslims and Hindus. The
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are designed to get you into
spiritual shape, and my first encounter with them showed me just
how out of shape I was.
The first “exercise” my spiritual director gave me was, at
the end of each day, to review the past 24 hours and name two
positive feelings and two negative feelings I had over that period
of time. Well, each evening I would find a quiet place in my
apartment, light a candle and proceed to review my day. Lots
of things happened during each 24 hour period, but my conclusion
was always the same. I didn’t have any feelings. The following
week I went back to see my spiritual director and I apologized
because I hadn’t had any feelings that week. He gave me
one of those looks my father used to give me when he would
wonder if he was really cut out to be a parent or not. My director
quickly recovered though, and said, “If you ever want a real
relationship with the Lord, you are going to have to learn how to
pay attention.”
LOOKING FOR A JOB CAN BE FRUSTRATING,
DISHEARTENING, AND CAN LEAVE YOU FEELING
ISOLATED.
You are not alone.
There are people who stand ready to help
and support you on your journey.
Ignatius wants us to learn how to pay
attention because God is always present
in our experience. God is incarnate
in each of our life stories. The
Exercises help us to reflect on the experience
of God in our story…so that
you and I can experience more of God
in our story.
Starting last January, 2011, I have had
the privilege of participating in the
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius with
a group of fifteen women and men here
at St. Margaret Mary. Each has made a
commitment to daily prayer, meeting
regularly with a spiritual director and
sharing their experience with one another
through prayerful conversation.
We have learned how to pay close attention
to the story of our own lives, to
witness our own personal journey not
just through our own eyes, but through
God’s eyes…and lo and behold, we
have found Love clearly present in
the very details of each of our stories.
Twelve very different stories lived by
very different people, and yet the
encounter each of us has had with
God has produced very similar graces.
In these past months, we have
each developed a growing awareness
and confidence in the God of goodness
who sustains us day by day.
We have each experienced a greater
acceptance of our own gifts and our
own limits, and each of us has a new
found openness to the unknown and a
deepening desire for what is yet to
come.
7
Participating in these exercises together,
we have certainly been drawn
into friendship with one another, but
beyond that, we have been drawn,
and many of us for the first time, into
a friendship with the Lord. We Catholics
usually don’t talk about having
a personal relationship with God, we
save that kind of language for our
Protestant brothers and sisters. Ignatius
knew that since God’s love is
present in the details of our lives,
each of us will encounter God in a
very personal way. This is why at the
beginning of the Exercises he instructs
those spiritual directors giving
the Exercises to trust the relationship
between the Creator and the creature…even
when the creature is not
able to identify his own feelings.
Fr. Paul’s Homily
Beyond our Natural Capacities
“So be perfect, just as your heavenly
Father is perfect.”
Now people are forever complaining
about this gospel, and in particular
the word “perfect.” They say, well,
that’s simply impossible; that must
be a mistranslation; nobody can be
perfect.
The point of the whole reading, however,
is that Jesus is indicating that
we are called to a life way beyond
what anyone could call our natural
capacities. And whether for good or
for bad, the fact of the matter is the
Church, having become so much a
part of society over thousands of
years, tended to dilute its message,
making it more palatable to ordinary
human life, ordinary human perceptions,
ordinary human nature. So the
Fathers of the Church agreed human
nature had some good in it, and it
surely does, and we can find goodness
everywhere in every civilization,
at every time, some goodness, but
also, evil.
Well, when Jesus says “be perfect, as
your heavenly Father is perfect,” it
means with no evil, not mixed, perfect
in the sense of pure. And it is
possible precisely because God
makes it possible. It is not something
that we simply do because we will to
do it. It’s something we do because
God wills us to do it and gives us the
means, which is a participation in his
own nature. Therefore, we can be
perfect as the Father is perfect
because God gives us his perfect
Matthew 5:38-48
nature in a participatory way,
which we call grace.
Now it’s true we don’t jump into
that life all at once, both feet. We
grow into it, gradually, but we
grow into it and really need to recognize
that there is a distance involved
between where we are
born, where we live in this world
and where God wants us to move.
And this whole gospel talks about
all that.
Now sometimes, of course, Jesus
uses exaggerations. “When someone
strikes you on your right cheek,
turn the other as well.” That of
course is just an example. It wouldn’t
make much difference whether
you do it or not. But the point is if
you resist evil, you will become
evil. If you resist violence, you will
become violent. That’s the point.
And so if you want to remain peaceful,
you have to act peacefully.
Now what about people who want
to kill us Well, what about it
Our trust cannot be rooted in this
world or in this life, including
physical existence. The whole
horizon of what we are here for has
moved in Christ. And so in regard
to this gospel, we have to rethink
all that we have been led to
believe about our right of
self-defense. What right do we really
have What does this say That’s
the question; and in a way, I think
Jesus meant to leave us with a
question.
This week, as we celebrate the
independence of our nation, let us
also ponder the words in the document
that shaped it.
"We hold these Truths to be selfevident,
that all Men are created
equal, that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain unalienable
Rights, that among these are
Life,..." —Thomas Jefferson, July, 1776
JESUS’ EXAMPLE OF HELPING OTHERS
In today’s second reading Paul offers a wonderful argument to
his converts at Corinth for seeking to help those in need. He is
dealing with a practical problem, arranging a collection for the
poor of the church of Jerusalem; but as he often does, he
develops an important teaching about Jesus to make his point.
After asking that they show their faith by generous gifts, he
reminds them of the “gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that
though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his
poverty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). In the
Incarnation our Lord assumed our human nature, certainly
becoming poor for one who is God. The ultimate gracious act of
this poverty was going to the cross with all its terrible sufferings.
By this act of poverty we definitely become rich. Now our sins
can be forgiven; we can share in the very life of God through the
sacraments; we can attain eternal salvation!
