Atlantic by Joanna Palazzolo
is it any wonder by Radioplay
To me there has always been a haunting element to the lyrics in Atlantic. Whilst
thinking about which song I wanted to cover for UTIS I could hear my own version
of Atlantic going around in my head. I wanted to slow things down and create
an atmosphere with the lyrics. When I hear this song I think of being up in an
aeroplane flying back and forth from my home in England to New York to visit my
then boyfriend now husband, which is why I ended the song with a jet plane. The
lyrics speak of my thoughts and fears on those journeys whilst crossing the Atlantic.
I wanted to give the song a different feel as if I was in a place where lonely
angels sing me to my sleep. All of the sounds I chose on the song were to
give a sense of being up on plane in my own cocoon with the wind and otherworldly
sounds. I used the sound of a heartbeat which I felt went with the mood
and captures a bit of Ultravox's Vienna, one of my favourite
songs. I recorded the song in the early hours of my
freezing cold New York apartment on my Roland Fantom
X8 which I bought a week before this recording. It was my
first time performing, recording and mixing a song on a
keyboard and I was chuffed to make a Keane song my
first.
Like many fans, I first heard Is It Any Wonder when it received its U.K. radio premiere
on Jo Whiley's Radio 1 show in April 2006. To say I was astonished was an
understatement - I loved the song itself, but was particularly blown away by the
sonic effects that they'd managed to achieve using pianos and synths - some
particularly "guitar-like" sounds, most notably the piano riff with its heavy wah
and distortion.
I decided to attempt to cover the track for two main reasons - firstly, its just a
great song and its good to hear Keane doing something so full-on. My second
(and perhaps greater) motivation was to satisfy my own music-geek desires in
an attempt to replicate some of the extreme crazy sounds that Tim managed to
get out of his piano - however, there's even some guitar in there! My original
intention was to have a guest vocalist on this track but lack of time meant I didn't
have time to properly pull this together (sorry Kerry!) -
so, this version has my own vocals on it.
The track was recorded at home using Adobe Audition
on a Mac Pro, using a variety of sounds, guitars, virtual
synths and external effects.
nothing in my way
by Twilidyne
Leaving so soon
by Artemis
We decided to make a cover of Nothing In My Way because it was one of our favorite
songs on the album. We both have a friend who we think this song applies
too. He had been going through a tough time in his life and it was obvious that
something was wrong, but he tried his very hardest to cover it up.
We recorded this song using a few diffrent digital piano. We decided to go with
the original introduction because we wanted it to be a bit diffrent than the album
version. We were able to create the distorted piano sounds by using actual distortion
pedals for electric guitars and some of the effects on the music studio
program we used to record the song. After the instrumental part of the song was
done we recorded our vocals
and finished the song.
It all began on a fateful Saturday... Heather set down a boogie at the pianoforte,
while Jessica ate her mac and cheese. In-between the chastising of little sisters,
Jessica swooned the red-hot mic with her sultry vocals, then passed it on to Heather.
Pausing to purge the inner lining of her lungs through extreme coughing
fits, Heather managed to lay down her vocals with her lungs still in tact. Teacher
said the bubonic plague would never hit ya, but she also told us Pluto was the
ninth planet from the sun. When Heather is not enduring the deterioration of her
lungs, you can find her speaking Chinese and Russian to hobos at Arizona State
University. And when Jessica is not eating mac and cheese, you can find her eating
pie at ASU while engrossed in a book detailing the
engineering of chemicals. The two joined forces under the
alias "Artemis" 4 years ago, but the band is (or as you say
over the pond, "the band are") more of an occasional rendezvous
revived now and then to remember that whatsoever
our soul is destined to inhale, we shall exhale all
through music.
a bad dream by Adrien & Lojay
Hamburg song by Lojay
Here are Adrien « Polar » Bolko (19) and Laurence « Lo » JAY (35) from France.
Adrien from Champagne, where he studies multimedia, and Lo from Bordeaux
where she’s doing network marketing, met in Paris at a Keane’s gig. Their
encounter was a revelation !
We recorded A Bad Dream in one shot at a Lo’s friend’s home studio in Bordeaux
and created our own intimist and spontaneous sound with Lo on her Martin & Co
guitar and Adrien on keyboard. It was a real challenge to experience this crazy
adventure for we didn’t know each other and had no idea what would come out!
Besides it was the very first
recording session for Adrien
! Thanks Antoine for being a
great helpful sound engineer.
We had a blast !
Hi! My name is Laurence “Lo” Jay (35) from Bordeaux/France, where I studied
international trade and foreign languages. I now develop my own network marketing
business along with playing jazz and pop music as a real passionate!
I’ve developed a true love for Keane’s magical sound in which I recognize myself
and this similar particular feeling I get when I write my own songs, which I have
done for twenty years now. I also love singing and playing guitar and banjo.
I chose Hamburg Song which could’ve been part of my own recent life and love
story and I wanted to try to give as much as emotion as Tom does on this tune in
my own way by creating a different but still intimate
sound based on acoustic guitar. I used my old Martin &
Co and did the recording session in Bordeaux at a good
friend’s of mine called Antoine Muel.
put it behind you by Amy Keller
the iron sea by Radioplay
I originally chose Hamburg Song because the guitar chords were fairly basic, but
the song has come to have a special meaning for me. The words express perfectly
my feelings about a difficult situation I faced in the past few weeks with a person
I care about. Learning to play Hamburg Song gave me an outlet for my emotions.
Here’s my version of Hamburg Song with me singing and playing guitar.
I decided to cover Put It Behind You one day before the final due date for this project
since no one had submitted a cover for this song. Four hours and some very
tired, bruised, and numb fingers later, I had learned the chords and recorded
this version. And, I love this song - it has good advice from Tim R-O! So here’s
my version of Put It Behind You with me singing and playing
guitar.
Special thanks to Mo Rice-Oxley for his generous help in
mixing the songs and to Caitlin (Frog_Princess) for her
input and general encouragement in the process.
When I first watched the Strangers DVD, the section that interested me about it
the most was watching Tim alone in Helioscentric, experimenting with new
sounds - the most exciting of which was watching him bash out an overdriven
melody at the CP-70, heavily drenched in tape echo. I was delighted to discover
that original melody morphed into what we now know as The Iron Sea. This epic
instrumental is the cornerstone of the album, simultaneously deeply mournful
and uplifting, evoking the turmoil and pressure the band were going through.
My aim was to concentrate on taking the epic nature of the track and twisting
it into something even more evocative and filmic. The distorted
piano that is the bedrock of the original is still present,
but is now layered deep within a darker, orchestral
backing. I attempted to make this the soundtrack to an
imaginary movie, expanding the intensity of the original to
an even larger canvas.
crystal ball by Carmen & Simon
try again by Adrien
The track was recorded over a 2 week period, after Carmen first approached
Simon with an idea for covering Crystal Ball. The song was chosen after hearing
a beautiful acoustic version of the track and becoming enthralled by it... so we
tried to rip it off (whether that was a good idea or not, remains to be seen!).
Simon first recorded the piano, then sent to Carmen who sang main vocals over
the top, and then sent back to Simon for final producing, editing and mastering,
as well as recording 2 sets of backing vocals.
My name's Adrien “Polar” Bolko and I'm French. I'm just 19 and I'm a student in
New technologies...Keane is one of my favorite lads and I love the way they sound.
And, it's at the Keane's gig in Paris that I met Lojay who offered me the possibility
of recording some songs with her in a studio. And I thank her very much.
I chose Try Again because I really love that song. I discovered it in the Strangers
DVD and I fell in love with this song, which means a lot to me. I wanted to record
it in order to discover how recording a song too... And it was wonderful to do it.
I played keyboard and I wanted to hear an organ on this song, so I tried to put it
as best as I could and I hope you enjoy listening it. It was
the first recording session in my life and I'm very, very
glad to have done it.
oken toy by Twilidyne
the frog prince
by Larissa & Greenstick
We chose to make a cover of Broken Toy because it has a really powerful message
about friendship. Our friends probably mean more to us than anybody else
in the world besides our families. We both have had friends who betrayed our
friendship and so covering this song feels like we are singing to thoes old friends
who left us behind.
Recording this song was kind of difficult at first because we had never played
anything in 3/4 time before. After figuring out the drums to the song we were
able to record the song using a digital piano. We then used vocal effects to create
certian sounds that we could not make with a keyboard. For the piano distortion
we just mic'd a piano up and
distorted the piano using
the music software's effects
plugins.
I only wanted to do Is It Any Wonder first but then I saw that Greenstick also did
an instrumental of The Frog Prince I just had to do it as well. I like this song because
it remembers me of a fairy tale or something like that. Nothing more to
say, that was the reason I chose it. (Larissa)
The Frog Prince isn't a very complicated song (there's an repeating pattern that
runs all the way out) so it didn't take very long to learn and record it. After posting
the track on the forum Larissa asked me if she could use the instrumental for the
cover project and of course I gave my permission. Unfortunately she used an old
version of the song wich contains some mistakes... Larissa told me that The Frog
Prince is very difficult song to sing for her because she just can't sing as low as
Tom can. (Dirk-Jan)
Is it any wonder
by Larissa & Greenstick
I chose Is it any Wonder because I really like this song and because it's the reason
why I became a Keane Fan. I love to sing it and it's one of my favorites. When
I first read that there will be a competition, the first song that came to my mind
was Is it any Wonder. And then when Greenstick said that he wanted to do it with
me I was really happy. That's why I chose to do it. (Larissa)
Bonus Tracks
At first I didn't know where to start making IIAW but after some experimenting
with the effects my piano started to sound like the 'guitar' intro. Just a few day's
after that moment I posted the song on the forum (the drums, bass and effects
were pretty easy to make), and many people seemed to like the song. When I
received the version Larissa made, I was really impressed by her voice. Unfortunately
we didn't win the
competition. (Dirk-Jan)
hamburg song by Nicht-Schöller
the frog prince by Areal
We formed the band in September 2006 in Vienna (Austria) and have since been
covering a number of rock and metal classics, but also working on some own
material. We are all influenced by different genres: Bernhard is into medieval music
and a Beatles maniac, Karin is mainly influenced by indie and singer-songwriter
stuff, Mark is Mr. Manowar and Tom has a soft spot for alternative rock and
Irish music. The common ground however is rock!
Karin has been a Keane fan since 2003 and is one of the hosts of the cover album
project. It was logical that she would convince the band to work on a cover song, and
we decided to go for Hamburg Song. The recording was a great learning experience
for the whole band, since this was the first track we had ever recorded properly.
We decided to speed up the song significantly and make our own, angrier (yet
brighter) rock version of this melancholic piano ballad. The instruments (drums,
guitar, bass, and a tiny littly piano line at the very
beginning of the song) and vocals were recorded
track by track in our rehearsal room. The song was
then mixed using a standard recording software.
First of all thank's for this great oportunity!
The band was started in 1999 in Kyiv with three 12-years-old students of a secondary
school and one bassist. Right off the bat, the band began an endless process
of searching for their sound and style. First success came in 2003 when
AREAL took part in Chevrona Ruta and Podyh festivals and won some considerable
prizes. Here upon the band began to play on various club parties and festivals
in Kyiv and sometimes in other Ukrainian cities. Soon the first recordings began
to arise. Years 2004-2005 were spent by AREAL playing evergreens on bikers parties
and in Kyiv pubs. In 2006 AREAL's songs began to appear on some Ukrainian
radio stations, and soon afterwards an official website was launched.
Currently the band is preparing and recording songs for
their first album release.
We decided to make a cover of The Frog Prince, because
this song is close to us and our feelings. It's so simple to
make Keane's cover if you love that music!
It's all we feel and all we can put in 4:05 min :)))
We just love it...
