Numbers 7:1 “It came to pass, on the day Moses finished erecting the Tabernacle, and he
anointed it and consecrated it and all of its utensils, and the Altar and all its utensils, and
he anointed them and consecrated them.”
Beth El has a deep tradition behind it and God-willing, a wonderful future ahead. From
the above verse, our rabbis understand the central role our places of worship, like the
Tabernacle (mishkan), play in the relationship between humanity and God. We learn in
Midrash Tanhuma 20, and as well in the Gur Aryeh’s explanation of Rashi’s comments,
that the Tabernacle was the place where God and the Israelites joined in a sacred spiritual
union—just like a bride and groom meeting under the wedding canopy. And so, when
Moses began erecting the Tabernacle, so too came the true beginning of the spiritual
cleaving of God to the people, and the people to God. We care deeply about our houses
of worship, especially Beth El. And our synagogue helps us to focus our intentions of
getting closer to God. As we move forward into the next chapter of Beth El’s history,
may our newly constructed home be a place of union and communion—for human and
Divine alike. -AO
Yom Kippur Food Drive Planning Committee
The need for food is greater than ever and everyone is
welcome to help plan the annual Yom Kippur Food
Drive. The committee meets only twice a year and will
be meeting on Wednesday, June 15th at 7:00pm at Beth
El. Its a wonderful mitzvah and a fun committee as well.
Each year, Beth El donates over 5 tons of food to the
food shelf. Come and help make this year just as
successful.
We are on the move!
The building is abuzz with activity: The Aleph School is busy
unpacking their rooms. New furniture makes already beautiful rooms
stunning. We look forward to filling the school with children as we
prepare for the summer camp program. The main synagogue offices
have officially moved from the coat closet to the upper level. This
requires more than moving a few desks and boxes. The computer,
phone, copy, security systems, etc. are currently being set up. The
Ring lobby is one of the final areas receiving attention- new carpet and
a new ceiling will make our entrance inviting and warm. Boxes fill the
halls and a moving truck makes the drive back and forth to the
warehouse bringing new loads on the hour. Outside, the sod is being
laid, the irrigation system tested and the landscaping touched up.
Inside, architects are working on a “punch list” of final items. Can you
imagine all of this activity while continuing with a full program
schedule: holding a Cuban art auction, Tikkun Leyl Shavu’ot, Stillman
Weekend, Rabbi Abelson celebration, hosting the JFCS annual
meeting, celebrating Tiny Treasures and on and on! Thank you to all
the professionals and volunteers helping with this enormous task.
Soon, the first phase of construction will be complete!
B’nai Mitzvah Israel Bond Program Beth El and Israel Bonds continue to offer our B’nai Mitzvah an opportunity to
invest in Israel Bonds. Through the generosity of our congregant, Fern Badzin, Beth El is able to match the amount of the
investment. Please call the synagogue office for more information.
Gifts Presented to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah A bar/bat mitzvah is a celebration not just for an individual family but for the
entire Jewish community, indeed the entire Jewish people. Beth El Synagogue and the Minneapolis Jewish community generously
give the following gifts in celebration of b’nai mitzvah:
A personalized kiddush cup by Beth El’s Sisterhood & Men’s Club for Shabbat and Festivals.
A matching contribution for those who invest in Israel Bonds through the generosity of Beth El congregant, Fern Badzin, to
solidify the bond between b’nai mitzvah and Medinat Yisrael.
A free year’s membership to the Sabes Jewish Community Center including use of fitness and teen centers.
A partial scholarship toward an Israel trip for young adults who continue their Jewish education from the Louis Herman Israel
Experience Fund, an endowment of the Jewish Community Foundation of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation.
The Etz Hayim Humash for students of the Talmud Torah to encourage ongoing Torah study.
A Pirkei Avot book for students of the Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School to commemorate their passage through the
doorway of Jewish adulthood.
