all of the conference, reserve registrant and guest seats for events, join a group
called the Assembly on Computers in English, contribute to the Graduate
Student Fund, and purchase selected readings at a discount (the conference
T-shirt is free). Scheduled transportation to / from the airport is complimentary.

Bolter. The Writing Space: The Computer,
Hypertext and the History of Writing
This extremely important book examines the
effect of writing and other material literacy
technologies on thinking and culture.
Bolter & Grusin. Remediation: Understanding
New Media
Because of the rapid development of new
digital media, older electronic and print media
invoke immediacy and hypermediacy in an
attempt to remake themselves. Check out this
recently released title.
Hawisher, LeBlanc, Moran, & Selfe. Computers
and the Teaching of Writing in Higher
Education: A History, 1979-1994
In this relatively new discipline we have already
produced a history. This book perhaps best
documents it.

These are modern fairy tales. Princesses with

This is Gwyneth Jones’ most “realistic” nearfuture
novel. The two main human characters
are twenty-first century journalists. Near-future
media technology, networking, and associated
social developments are strongly foregrounded.
Selfe. Technology and Literacy in the Twenty-
First Century
This key text confirms the importance of
technology for literacy’s sake and challenges us
to pay attention “in the best modern way,” as
Hugh Burns puts it.

A great book if you’re investigating the effect of
computer technologies on subcultures.
Star. Sorting Things Out: Classification and Its
Consequences
This book shares a classification system for the
Information Age, and then analyzes the effect of
this structure on our thinking processes.
